# GMAT Accommodations: Extra Time and Booking | topin

On this page

## Separate requesting, approval and booking

GMAC’s accommodations page, checked on 5 October 2026, says existing appointments cannot have accommodations added or changed. You cannot register for an accommodated appointment until approval. Creating an mba.com account is part of the request process; it is different from paying for a standard exam appointment.

Start with the official supplement linked from that page and the documentation guidance relevant to your request. List the adjustment you need, the evidence available and what is missing. The supplement describes a case-by-case decision. A diagnosis, a university letter or past extra time may support the request but does not by itself prove approval.

Keep the three states visible: request submitted, decision received and appointment confirmed. An email confirming submission is not a decision letter. A decision letter is not a booked seat. If an application deadline matters, your plan needs a route through all three states and enough time for the resulting official score.

Our [retake calendar](/articles/gmat-retake-calendar) covers ordinary attempt spacing. Accommodation approval and specialised scheduling are additional processes, so do not simply add sixteen days after a previous sitting and assume that an appropriate appointment is available. Check the decision letter and current scheduling instructions.

## Assemble evidence around the current testing limitation

Use a short document inventory: evaluator report, current functional impact, history of adjustments and requested accommodation. Follow the supplement’s disability-specific guidance rather than treating this inventory as a replacement form. Explain how the documented limitation affects taking the intended exam under standard conditions.

For an original preparation example, a candidate may have a university adjustment letter but no current explanation connecting the limitation to timed computer testing. The next task is to ask the relevant qualified professional or university support office for help assembling the required evidence, not to assume the letter guarantees the same adjustment on GMAT.

Check readability and completeness before submitting. A file containing only the first page of a report or an unreadable scan can create an avoidable request for more information. Keep a copy of the exact package submitted and the confirmation. If documents need translation, follow the supplement’s requirements rather than paraphrasing the medical or educational material yourself.

The public page mentions a confirmation-of-prior-accommodations review form as a possible route for requests involving 50% extra time or an additional rest break. “Possible” does not mean every previous approval transfers. Read that form’s own conditions and use the official process that matches your circumstances.

## Use the current linked supplement and label its limits

The supplement currently linked from the official page has an older effective date and contains some classic-exam references. Its request timeline is nevertheless the document the page directs candidates to read. It describes review through day 25 and written next-step decisions during days 26–30, in business days, with volume and additional-documentation caveats.

Do not turn that into a guaranteed calendar-month turnaround. Business days exclude weekends, and holidays and increased testing volume can affect the real calendar. The supplement says an incomplete request can restart the review timeline when further documentation is submitted. A plan based on a perfect first submission should keep contingency.

__Suggested planning stages; actual timing follows the current process and your decision__
| Stage | Concrete output | Calendar treatment |
| --------------------- | --------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------ |
| Preparation | Complete relevant documentation | Allow time before submission |
| Submission | Confirmation and retained document package | Start the review record |
| Review | Written decision or request for more evidence | Use business-day guidance with contingency |
| Scheduling | Confirmed accommodated appointment | Availability may differ by adjustment |
| Testing and reporting | Official result and recipient sends | Allow separate score-release time |

If the timing in an older downloaded supplement differs from the currently linked version, confirm with the accommodations team. Do not select whichever figure gives the earliest test date. The [score-reporting guide](/articles/gmat-score-reporting-deadlines) explains the separate release and receipt buffers once the appointment occurs.

## Read the September 2026 scheduling update after approval

The current centre scheduling support article distinguishes accommodations that can be booked directly in mba.com from those needing Pearson’s accommodation scheduling request form. Its direct-booking list includes approved 50% or 100% extra time and several other named adjustments. For other approved accommodations, the article describes assisted scheduling.

That guidance is for candidates with an official approval letter. It does not permit self-selecting extra time before approval. A candidate approved for a separate room, for example, should follow the assisted route rather than making an ordinary appointment and asking the centre to improvise the arrangement on arrival.

Use the approved adjustment, expiry or other conditions in the decision letter when selecting the appointment. If the letter and current article leave your case unclear, contact the official team. Do not generalise a centre scheduling route to an online accommodated exam without checking instructions for that mode.

Save the final confirmation and compare it with the approval. Ask whether the record reflects the required arrangement if the details are not clear. A payment receipt shows a transaction; it is weaker evidence than an appointment confirmation matching the approved testing conditions.

## Calculate a practice budget for the time actually approved

For a standard 45-minute section, a 50% increase gives 45 × 1.5 = 67.5 minutes, or 67 minutes 30 seconds. A 100% increase gives 90 minutes. These are arithmetic illustrations for those approved levels, not predictions of which accommodation GMAC will grant or permission to alter a live exam timer.

If your letter approves 50% additional time and the section uses 67:30, an illustrative plan could reserve 4:30 for review and use 63 minutes for first-pass work. Divide that by the section’s question count when designing checkpoints. The reserve is our planning suggestion and should be tested, not copied as an official required pace.

Extra time does not eliminate the need for method selection. If you repeatedly spend five minutes choosing a denominator, use untimed practice to fix the setup, then test the method inside the approved timing. The goal is accurate execution under your actual conditions, not filling every additional minute with a second full reading.

GMAC’s current practice-product instructions explain activating approved additional time with the code from the decision email. They say it cannot be applied to an exam already in progress. Configure official practice before starting, and verify the displayed timer. Use [Review and Edit](/articles/gmat-review-edit-strategy) as a targeted check within that budget.

For a 21-question practice section with a 63-minute first-pass budget, the arithmetic average is three minutes per question. That is not an instruction to spend exactly three minutes on every item. If a short problem takes one minute, the unused budget can support more demanding work or review. Checkpoints should reveal delay before it becomes a rush, not dictate identical durations.

For the same illustrative budget, first-pass checkpoints after seven and fourteen answers are 21 and 42 minutes elapsed, leaving 46:30 and 25:30 from a 67:30 total. They assume the approved timer actually is 67:30\. If your appointment implements different timing or break arrangements, rebuild the schedule from that confirmed setup.

## Keep the application plan flexible until the appointment is confirmed

Start requests early enough that additional documentation would not automatically destroy the intended application round. Work backwards from the programme’s receipt rule, then leave room for score release, the appointment and the request process. These stages have different clocks; a single “accommodations complete” checkbox hides too much.

If the request is declined or partially approved, read the decision letter’s stated next steps. Do not assume that a diagnosis was rejected or that the entire application route is closed. The specific decision concerns the submitted evidence and requested testing arrangement; its letter is the right starting point for any review or further documentation.

topin’s [free full-length GMAT mock](/gmat/practice-test), marked on the official scale, can support preparation. Check whether a practice tool reproduces your approved timing and conditions before using its score as readiness evidence. Where it does not, record the difference and use suitable practice for the full rehearsal.

The final check is concrete: approved adjustment, correct booking route, confirmed appointment, acceptable ID, practice under the intended timing and a reporting buffer. Keep support correspondence with that record. A complete plan lets you focus on reasoning once the appointment arrives, while avoiding the assumption that approval alone settles every logistical step.
