# GMAT ID Requirements: Passport and Name Match | topin

## Start with location and citizenship, not a familiar domestic ID

GMAC’s ID page says acceptable documents vary by location and requires a passport when testing outside your country of citizenship. The live location selector is part of the check. A document used for banking, travel within India or another examination is not automatically acceptable for this appointment.

Check three things separately: where you will test, the citizenship recorded in your account and the delivery mode. A candidate living abroad may confuse residence with citizenship; the official overseas-testing rule refers to citizenship. Review your account before relying on a domestic ID accepted by some other institution.

This article does not present a universal list of domestic alternatives for every country. If the location rule is unclear, use the current [official ID page](https://www.mba.com/exams/gmat-exam/register/id-requirements) and Customer Care before paying. An original unexpired passport book is a sensible document to check first, but it still needs the required matching details.

The [online-versus-centre comparison](/articles/gmat-online-vs-test-centre) helps you choose the delivery mode. Finish the ID review for that chosen mode, rather than assuming a document discussed in an old online guide is also valid at a centre. Keep a dated record of the applicable rule and any written case-specific guidance.

## Audit the physical document while there is time to act

The general ID requirements call for a current legible document with the account-matching Roman-alphabet name, matching date of birth, a recognisable photograph and signature. The support page requires an original physical document and rejects copies. Inspect the actual document, not only a photograph stored on your phone.

| -------------------- | ------------------------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------- |
| Validity | Expiry covers the appointment date | Resolve renewal before relying on the appointment |
| Original | Physical document is available | Do not substitute a scan or photocopy |
| Name | Spelling, order and placement match the account | Use the official correction process |
| Birth date | Document and account agree | Resolve the account or documentation issue |
| Photo and legibility | Identification is recognisable and readable | Ask Customer Care if the document is unsuitable |
| Local acceptance | Testing-location requirements allow the document | Obtain the right document or approved guidance |

An expired passport does not become valid because renewal paperwork exists. If a renewal is pending, build the test date around the acceptable document you will actually hold. Do not make the appointment depend on an estimated processing date unless you are prepared to change the plan if that estimate fails.

The general page and the support FAQ have differing wording about passport cards, so do not use that ambiguity as permission. Confirm the applicable local requirements and obtain explicit guidance if considering one. This is an example of why checking the specific appointment is more useful than copying a broad list from a search result.

## Compare name fields character by character

A name mismatch can involve a missing given name, reversed order, an extra name or a nickname. Compare the registration display with the accepted ID and the official field instructions. Do not assume that the way a university transcript abbreviates your name is the way the exam account should record it.

Consider an invented passport entry with given names “Arjun Kumar” and surname “Rao”. An account displaying “Arjun Rao” may omit a given name. An account displaying “Rao Arjun Kumar” may reverse placement. These examples identify possible issues; they are not approved account-field instructions for every passport format.

If the passport has a blank surname field or a different naming structure, ask Customer Care how to enter it. Do not invent a placeholder or move a parent’s name into a field simply because another candidate did so. The correct procedure should come from the exam provider’s instructions for your identity record.

After any authorised correction, read back the account and appointment confirmation. A support conversation requesting a correction does not prove it has been applied. Save the case reference and confirm the final display before exam day. The [score-reporting guide](/articles/gmat-score-reporting-deadlines) explains why consistent details also help later application matching.

## Read the Aadhaar update before the older instructions below it

The official Aadhaar page includes a policy update: Aadhaar is no longer accepted for the online GMAT from 12 June 2025\. The same page retains older explanatory material about Aadhaar registration. The update takes priority when deciding whether that older material applies to an online appointment in 2026.

This is a dated online rule, not a newly invented claim about every domestic document in every delivery mode. For a centre appointment in India, inspect the current location-specific requirements. Do not conclude that the removal of one online option creates permission to use a different document at a centre.

If your account was created using an older naming convention tied to Aadhaar, compare it with the acceptable document you now intend to present. The update may change more than which card you bring: it can expose a name mismatch between the earlier account and the current passport. Resolve that through support before the appointment.

For applicants planning overseas study, check that the passport is available throughout the test period. If it is with a visa office or being renewed, a photo of it is not the original. Choose a date when you can meet the identification requirements rather than treating the passport’s usual ownership as evidence that you can present it on test day.

## Use support early when ordinary requirements cannot be met

The support article says alternate-identification approval is limited and must be received at least five business days before the appointment. The general ID page asks candidates unable to meet requirements to contact test security at least ten business days before planning to schedule, and to obtain approval before scheduling. Start earlier and follow the route applicable to your situation.

These instructions are not interchangeable last-minute guarantees. A candidate seeking a formal exception should not wait until five business days before testing merely because one support paragraph mentions that minimum. The general page’s earlier contact guidance leaves room for review before booking, and approval is not assured.

Prepare a concise case with the full name, appointment details if any, documents held and the specific obstacle. Use the official submission channel and provide documents only as requested. Explain whether the issue is document acceptance, missing elements, expiry or account mismatch; those may need different resolutions.

If you have already booked, review the current change policy while the issue is being addressed. Do not assume a pending support request protects the appointment fee. Formal approval or a completed correction is stronger evidence than a message acknowledging that support received your enquiry. Keep the practical date decision separate from the hope of an exception.

## Complete the ID check alongside your final rehearsal

Several days before the exam, repeat the comparison using the current appointment confirmation. Confirm the physical document is still available, unexpired and legible. If you rescheduled or changed country, redo the location review. A successful audit for an earlier appointment does not automatically cover a new location or different ID.

On the previous day, put the original acceptable document with the appointment information and verify the route or online check-in plan. Follow the provider’s check-in instructions rather than carrying unapproved substitutes. If a required identification element is unresolved, contact support and reassess the booking instead of hoping the testing staff will waive it.

Use topin’s [free full-length GMAT mock](/gmat/practice-test), marked on the official scale, for your reasoning rehearsal; use this audit for appointment readiness. A strong mock does not check your passport or registration. Keeping those two tasks explicit prevents academic preparation from hiding a practical barrier to testing.

Your final record should contain the accepted document, location rule, matching account details and any written exception approval. You should be able to explain why the ID works without citing an old forum comment. That is the useful finish line: a complete check for the actual appointment, with enough time left to fix what you discovered.

## FAQs

Can I use a photocopy of my passport for GMAT?

No. The support requirements call for an original physical ID, and the general page lists photocopies as unacceptable.

Can I use Aadhaar for GMAT Online in 2026?

No. The official update removed Aadhaar acceptance for online appointments from 12 June 2025.

Does my GMAT name need to match my passport?

The accepted ID and registration must match under the provider’s naming requirements. Resolve missing, reversed or additional names before the appointment.

Can an expired passport be used with renewal papers?

No. The official ID page says renewal papers do not make an expired passport valid.

What if my passport has no surname?

Ask Customer Care for the correct entry procedure rather than inventing a placeholder or copying another candidate’s solution.
