# GMAT Online vs Test Centre: A Booking Checklist | topin

## Check programme acceptance before comparing convenience

Delivery availability from GMAC does not establish programme acceptance. Read the testing policy for the exact degree and intake, and save the date checked. An institution’s executive MBA policy may differ from its full-time MBA policy. Treat a missing statement about delivery mode as a question to resolve, not an automatic permission.

For a verified example, MIT Sloan’s 2027-entry full-time MBA instructions accept self-reported scores from online and centre exams without a format preference. That is a specific school policy checked on 5 October 2026\. It is not evidence that every school treats both formats identically.

For a shortlist containing programmes with different requirements, prefer a single mode that satisfies all priority applications if practical. If you plan two modes, record why each appointment is necessary and include the combined retake constraints. The [retake calendar](/articles/gmat-retake-calendar) explains why changing delivery does not create a separate attempt allowance.

Ask admissions a precise question when needed: “For this degree and entry year, do you accept the current GMAT delivered online?” Keep the reply with the application instructions. A generic answer about recognising GMAT may leave the delivery question unresolved. Finish this step before paying for an appointment.

## Compare the operational burden, not an invented easier exam

| Decision | Online | Test centre |

| Location | Private indoor room you control | Booked testing site |

The comparison is about delivery conditions. Do not assume one mode has easier questions or an automatic scoring advantage. A smooth home rehearsal can make online practical for you; a shared household and unreliable connection can make it unattractive even when the appointment time is convenient.

Likewise, a centre appointment removes your responsibility for the exam computer but adds a journey and an unfamiliar environment. A nearby reliable route differs from an early-morning trip through unpredictable traffic. Use your actual circumstances instead of treating “centre” as one identical experience worldwide.

For a candidate working full time, compare the total appointment burden: preparation of the room, advance system checks, check-in and post-test commitments for online; travel, check-in and return for a centre. The advertised testing duration is not the whole time you need to keep free.

## Audit the home setup on the actual computer and connection

GMAC’s current online rules require a system check before exam day using the same computer, internet and testing location. They prohibit mobile hotspots and tethering. A backup plan that consists of switching to a phone hotspot during the exam therefore does not solve the compliance problem.

Work and university computers can have administrative restrictions, security software, VPNs or firewalls that interfere with the platform. Run the required check before deciding that an employer laptop is suitable. Do not change managed security settings without the organisation’s permission; use another compliant computer if necessary.

The room must be private, quiet and free from interruptions, with a clear workspace. Explain the appointment boundary to people who share the home and arrange access so nobody needs to enter. A bedroom that is quiet during a short evening practice session may be busy during a daytime official appointment.

The current rules also prohibit multiple active displays and headphones or earbuds. Check the equipment guidance linked from the official page for supported technical specifications rather than relying on a saved operating-system list. Your setup should be confirmed on the live requirements, particularly if you recently changed the computer or peripherals.

## Rehearse the permitted note-taking workflow

At a centre, GMAC says a note-taking booklet and marker are provided; your own paper, notebooks and writing tools are not permitted in the testing room. Online, paper notes are not permitted and a compliant erasable whiteboard may be used. The [ID and preparation checklist](/articles/gmat-id-passport-name-match) covers another part of the appointment audit.

The online rules allow one unattached whiteboard up to 12 by 20 inches, up to two dry-erase markers and one eraser. They require showing the erased board at specified stages. Read those live instructions and practise within them; a wall-mounted board or a pile of paper is not an equivalent substitute.

Try a complete numerical session with the chosen note-taking surface. You may need to reduce sprawling working, label rows or erase more deliberately. Record whether your layout helps you trace a calculation after an interruption or during review. The aim is readable reasoning within the actual setup, not handwriting that looks impressive.

For an original layout example, put the requested quantity at the top, reserve a small area for constraints and keep the main equation below. On a work-rate question, that might be “hours”, “constant rates” and “1/6 + 1/12 = 1/4”. This compact format leaves room to check the setup without rewriting the full prompt.

## Reduce travel and arrival uncertainty before the appointment

GMAC’s centre checklist advises confirming the date, time and location, planning the route and arriving at least 30 minutes before the appointment. Check the confirmation against your account rather than using a calendar entry created before a reschedule. A changed location can make an otherwise sensible travel plan wrong.

Investigate the actual building entrance and transport plan. A map pin may identify a large complex without showing the testing office. Add reasonable travel contingency based on your route, and keep appointment information accessible before any phone storage requirements apply. These are our practical suggestions, not a fixed official travel allowance.

Use the official permitted-items and comfort-items guidance for anything you need during testing. Do not infer permission from what another candidate carried at a different location. If a required item needs advance approval, resolve it through the appropriate process before the appointment.

A centre can be a good option when your home cannot reliably meet privacy or connection requirements. It does not remove the need to check ID, programme rules and timing. Select it because the complete logistics work, not because a successful booking alone proves every testing requirement has been met.

## Make a booking decision with a short evidence record

Choose online if programme acceptance is confirmed and the real setup passes the equipment, privacy and note-taking checks. Choose a centre if it meets the shortlist and gives a more reliable environment. Delay booking if acceptance, identification or accommodation scheduling remains unresolved; fixing those gaps first avoids a preventable unusable appointment.

If testing conditions fail during an official session, notify the administrator or proctor immediately and follow instructions. GMAC reviews technical issues case by case; a no-cost retake is not automatic. Keep any case reference and describe the incident accurately when seeking support, rather than trying to solve it by abandoning the session without guidance.

topin’s [free full-length GMAT mock](/gmat/practice-test), marked on the official scale, can rehearse timing and your planned notes. It does not certify official system compatibility or room compliance. Run the provider’s required technical check as a separate task, even if the mock works smoothly in your browser.

Before payment, write one sentence explaining the choice and its evidence: “Centre delivery fits every priority programme and my home connection is unreliable”, or “Online is accepted and my actual room and computer passed the required checks”. Keep the confirmation, reporting plan and contingency details together so the decision remains clear when test day approaches.

Build a final go/no-go checklist for the chosen mode rather than repeatedly debating the preference. For online, the evidence is a successful current system check on the real setup and a room plan that still works on the appointment date. For a centre, it is a confirmed location, acceptable original ID and a feasible arrival plan. For either, programme acceptance must be resolved.

Consider an invented candidate whose home connection works at night but slows during daytime household use. A quiet late-night mock does not establish that a morning online appointment will run reliably. Testing under similar conditions and checking the provider requirements supplies better evidence than relying on the speed of an unrelated evening session.

## FAQs

Is GMAT Online easier than the test-centre exam?

Do not assume a mode-based difficulty advantage. Choose using programme acceptance and conditions that let you execute your preparation reliably.

Can I use paper for GMAT Online notes?

No. The standard online rules permit a compliant erasable whiteboard, not paper notebooks or writing pads.

Can I use my phone hotspot as backup internet?

The current online rules prohibit mobile hotspots and tethering. Plan a compliant reliable connection before booking.

Does every MBA accept GMAT Online?

Check the exact programme. MIT Sloan’s checked 2027-entry full-time policy accepts both modes, but that does not establish every programme’s policy.

Does switching to a centre avoid the retake interval?

No. Online and centre attempts share the interval and rolling attempt limit.
