## Count attempts across formats before choosing a date

The retake support policy checked on 5 October 2026 applies to centre and online appointments together. The minimum interval applies even if an exam was not completed or its score was cancelled. Cancelled-score exams count towards the rolling limit; appointments cancelled before the exam and missed appointments do not count towards that limit.

Keep appointment outcomes separate in your record. “Cancelled appointment” and “cancelled score” sound similar but describe different events. The first means you did not take that booked exam; the second means an exam attempt occurred and its score was cancelled. Confusing the labels can make your attempt count wrong.

Do not create separate online and centre budgets. A candidate with two online attempts and three centre attempts has used five attempts, not two independent allowances. If you are considering a delivery change, the [online-versus-centre guide](/articles/gmat-online-vs-test-centre) can help with practical suitability, but the change does not create a new retake interval.

Use your mba.com exam history as the starting record. Add the date, mode, outcome and whether the result is relevant to your intended programme. If an interrupted appointment or a security decision makes its treatment unclear, obtain case-specific confirmation before relying on a date. A support request is not approval of an exception.

## Calculate 16 calendar days without counting business days

For a completed attempt on 5 October 2026, adding 16 calendar days gives 21 October 2026\. Weekends count. The same arithmetic applied to 20 October gives 5 November. These examples illustrate ordinary minimum spacing; they do not promise appointment availability or resolve an unusual account restriction.

__Illustrative retake arithmetic under the ordinary interval__
| Previous attempt | Earliest ordinary retake | What remains to verify |
| ---------------- | ------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------ |
| 5 October 2026 | 21 October 2026 | Rolling allowance and available appointment |
| 20 October 2026 | 5 November 2026 | Preparation progress and reporting buffer |
| 25 November 2026 | 11 December 2026 | Whether a December deadline is already too close |
| 20 December 2026 | 5 January 2027 | Holiday availability and January receipt rules |

Do not count the testing day as day one and arrive a day early. The official support example uses 1 June → 17 June. Follow that date-addition approach rather than counting sixteen labels on a handwritten calendar. When time zones or unusual appointment outcomes are involved, verify the account’s eligible booking options.

The interval tells you when testing becomes permitted under the ordinary rule. It says nothing about whether sixteen days is sufficient to repair your weakness. If the first attempt exposed broad conceptual gaps, use a longer preparation period or a different application round rather than treating the legal minimum as a study prescription.

## Handle the rolling 12-month limit as a moving window

A rolling window does not reset on New Year’s Day. A candidate with five recent attempts cannot assume that 1 January creates five fresh opportunities. Inspect which attempts fall inside the relevant preceding 12 months when planning the proposed new appointment.

For an invented record of 12 November 2025, 20 January 2026, 15 March 2026, 3 June 2026 and 5 October 2026, all five are recent on 21 October 2026\. The 16-day spacing from 5 October may be satisfied then, but that alone does not make a sixth attempt eligible. Both conditions matter.

When an old attempt approaches the boundary, do not guess how the booking system treats an anniversary date. Use the account’s history and eligible dates, and contact Customer Care if needed. The point of the example is to identify the extra constraint, not to claim a universal midnight reset rule for every account.

Maintain two fields in your planner: “interval satisfied” and “attempt allowance available”. A third field, “programme accepts this score”, prevents a format or age mismatch from being hidden by successful registration. These separate checks make the calendar usable when several applications and previous attempts are involved.

## Work backwards from official receipt, not merely application submission

GMAC says official reports usually become available in three to five days, but occasionally take up to 20\. Whether a school allows self-reporting by its deadline is a separate rule. Our [score-reporting guide](/articles/gmat-score-reporting-deadlines) explains that distinction and the free sending window.

Suppose an imaginary programme requires official receipt by 15 December 2026\. A 25 November sitting leaves 20 days to that date, but consumes the entire occasional release allowance before recipient processing or any problem is considered. Calling that date “safe” would overstate the evidence. An earlier appointment provides a more useful buffer.

For a first attempt on 10 November and a possible retake on 26 November, the ordinary spacing works. The useful question is whether the second result could be released and received before the programme’s deadline, under its exact instructions. If you need two attempts plus a reporting buffer, plan the first one early enough for both stages.

A January round may leave more time, but do not assume every school has the same January deadline or time zone. Put each exact programme’s deadline and receipt rule on its own row. Use school-issued dates when making a real booking; the December example above is deliberately hypothetical.

## Choose a retake date only after identifying a repair

Read the report and select one or two repeatable causes of lost performance. “I need 40 more points” is a goal, not a repair. “I spent too long solving rate questions and guessed the final four” identifies a process that can be practised and checked. GMAC’s reports include performance and timing insights that can support this analysis.

Use a short plan with a verification gate. For example, spend several sessions rebuilding rate equations, then solve fresh mixed problems without the lesson visible, then run a timed section. If the same setup errors remain, extend preparation. The next date should follow evidence of progress, not only the expiry of the waiting period.

Protect the stronger sections while repairing the weaker one. A retake remains a complete exam. A plan that entirely abandons reading to chase Quant may create a new weakness, especially if you rely on [GMAT Superscore](/articles/gmat-superscore-school-policies) without checking the intended school’s treatment of it.

Set a stopping decision before the new sitting. Decide what fresh evidence would justify testing, delaying or applying with the existing result. That gives you a useful response to an uneven mock. Repeated bookings without an identified change consume attempts and money while leaving the original cause unresolved.

For an interrupted exam, separate the provider’s case review from the ordinary preparation decision. If support later offers a remedy, keep the written conditions with the booking record. Do not treat a technical incident as a reason to assume the interval or annual limit disappeared; the published technical-issue guidance explicitly says standard retake rules still apply.

A repeatable timing weakness can be checked without taking another official exam immediately. For example, compare the time spent on each of three fresh mixed rate sets after practising a phase table. If setup becomes clearer but the final section still runs late, the next repair may be the decision to stop, rather than more work-rate theory.

## A practical sit, delay or stop framework

Sit when the appointment is eligible, the result would serve the application, and fresh timed work supports the intended improvement. Delay when the underlying error persists and the later date still fits your application plan. Stop retaking when the current score serves your goal and the remaining application work is more urgent.

These are editorial decisions, not admissions guarantees. A class median does not establish that another attempt is necessary, and a below-median score does not by itself establish that applying is futile. Use the programme’s published requirements and your own academic context rather than an invented universal cutoff.

topin’s [free full-length GMAT mock](/gmat/practice-test), marked on the official scale, can test whether your repair survives a complete sitting. Record unfinished items, guessed items and conditions as well as the total. A remembered result obtained on repeated questions should not be your only reason to spend another attempt.

Before confirming the booking, read back the whole calendar: previous attempt, earliest eligible date, rolling attempt count, preparation gate, proposed test date, reporting allowance and programme receipt rule. If one field is unknown, resolve it before treating the plan as complete. A good retake plan explains both why the date is allowed and why it is useful.

## FAQs

How soon can I retake GMAT?

Under the ordinary policy, wait at least 16 calendar days between appointments. For a 5 October attempt, the earliest ordinary retake is 21 October.

Do online GMAT attempts count separately?

No. Online and test-centre attempts are combined for the retake interval and rolling attempt limit.

Do cancelled scores count as attempts?

Yes. The support policy includes exams with cancelled scores. A booking cancelled before the exam is a different event.

Does the attempt allowance reset in January?

No. It is a rolling 12-month limit, so inspect your actual history rather than the calendar year.

Is taking GMAT 20 days before a deadline safe?

It can leave little buffer if official release takes its occasional 20 days. Check the school’s receipt and self-reporting rules and plan earlier where possible.
