## Keep superscore and single-attempt score as separate records

GMAC’s reporting guidance says Superscore launched on 12 August 2026\. The current support pages were checked on 5 October 2026\. A superscore is an additional reported data point, not evidence that you achieved that combination of section performances during one complete exam.

The support eligibility page includes valid current-edition attempts delivered online or at a centre. Classic 10th Edition and expired results are excluded. A [classic-to-current conversion](/articles/gmat-score-converter) helps interpret historical scores but cannot turn a classic section into an eligible superscore component.

GMAC says the superscore uses the current total scale and does not have an associated percentile ranking. Do not assign a percentile by looking up the same numeral in the single-attempt percentile table. The numerical scale does not establish that the superscore has the same reference distribution.

Preserve three records in your application notes: each actual attempt, the official superscore if available and each programme’s evaluation instructions. Combining them in one “best score” field can conceal whether the value was achieved in one sitting or assembled by the reporting feature.

## Original section table: identify the components without inventing a total

__Invented valid current-edition attempts; total scores deliberately omitted__
| Attempt | Quant | Verbal | Data Insights | Role in component selection |
| --------- | ----- | ------ | ------------- | ---------------------------- |
| A, centre | 84 | 82 | 79 | Highest listed Quant |
| B, online | 82 | 85 | 80 | Highest listed Verbal |
| C, centre | 83 | 83 | 82 | Highest listed Data Insights |

For these invented attempts, the highest section values are Q84 from A, V85 from B and DI82 from C. This illustrates component selection only. We do not calculate a total from an improvised formula or claim that these numbers belong to an actual candidate. Use the official account’s reported superscore.

A single attempt combining those three values is not in the table. That distinction matters when an application asks for a specific test date and total. Enter the actual requested attempt information, and use a superscore field only according to the programme’s instructions. If the form has no clear place for the additional value, ask admissions rather than editing an actual attempt.

The reporting guidance says a superscore may still display when its total equals the highest single-attempt total but its selected components come from several attempts. Equal totals do not make the source dates identical. Read the component record before concluding that the superscore adds nothing to the report.

If attempt B in the invented table were ineligible, V85 would no longer be an available component under that record. The highest remaining listed Verbal would be V83 from C. This illustration shows why validity is part of component selection; a high number alone does not establish that the reporting feature can use it.

GMAC’s expiry FAQ notes that current-edition results first begin expiring in 2028 and that further details about the expiry process may be updated. Do not invent a permanent future handling rule from today’s page. For an application near an expiry boundary, recheck the live eligibility guidance and the programme’s own date rule.

The school’s score-age window can also differ in application wording from the provider’s reporting eligibility. Keep the programme deadline and accepted test-date range beside the attempt. An official superscore appearing in your account does not independently prove every component satisfies a particular school’s narrower requirement.

## Automatic inclusion is different from school acceptance

GMAC says candidates cannot opt out of an available superscore when sending a single-attempt report. The school report includes component section dates and delivery methods. Selecting a centre attempt therefore does not by itself imply that every superscore component came from a centre.

If a new attempt increases the superscore after an earlier report was sent, the support instructions say another single-attempt score send is needed to share the updated superscore. Do not assume a programme’s previously received report updates automatically after every later sitting.

The 48-hour free reporting window remains tied to the official score becoming available. Waiting for a superscore feature or decision does not stop that clock. The [reporting deadline guide](/articles/gmat-score-reporting-deadlines) explains how to prepare recipients and distinguish a send request from application matching.

Automatic inclusion tells you what the school receives, not what its admissions process gives weight to. A school can see the additional data while choosing to emphasise a complete single sitting. Its evaluation policy should guide your retake plan; the report’s ability to combine sections does not settle that decision.

## Yale and MIT show why programme-level checking matters

Yale SOM’s 2026–2027 MBA application guide says it will consider a superscore included on an official report. It also says test results are read with academic and professional evidence, without a fixed test weight or minimum. That is consideration, not a guarantee that a superscore replaces every single-attempt concern.

MIT Sloan’s 2027-entry MBA instructions say the superscore appears as an additional data point, but its current evaluation continues to focus on single attempts while it assesses future use. The page also says candidates should not worry that the additional value negatively affects the application.

__Verified examples from current full-time MBA instructions, checked 5 October 2026__
| Programme | Published treatment | Planning implication |
| ----------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------ | --------------------------------------------------- |
| Yale SOM, 2026–2027 cycle | Considers reported superscore in review | Keep section and broader readiness evidence visible |
| MIT Sloan, 2027 entry | Continues to focus on single attempts this cycle | Prepare for a strong complete sitting |
| Another programme on your shortlist | Must be checked directly | Do not import either example’s policy |

These examples are deliberately limited to policies verified on the programmes’ own pages. Do not build an exhaustive “accepts superscore” list by treating silence as acceptance or assuming a full-time policy applies to an executive degree. Save the exact current wording for each priority programme.

## Avoid sacrificing a section to chase one component

GMAC’s superscore FAQ recommends prioritising the best section and total performance on each attempt. That is also a practical default: an official retake is a complete exam, and your chosen programmes may evaluate the single sitting closely. Deliberately neglecting two sections creates a risk the component plan does not remove.

Suppose the invented candidate above wants to improve DI. A sensible repair plan practises the weak DI process while retaining mixed Quant and Verbal maintenance. A plan that stops reading entirely because V85 already exists assumes every programme will treat that earlier section as a replacement for the new sitting.

Before booking, name the reason for the retake, the process you expect to improve and the programme policy that makes the result useful. The [retake calendar](/articles/gmat-retake-calendar) covers the combined attempt limits and spacing. Superscore does not create a separate allowance to sit repeated single-section-style attempts.

If online and centre components are mixed, check any programme delivery restrictions. The support page confirms that both can be eligible for the reporting feature; it does not grant every school permission to accept each delivery mode. The component dates and modes are part of the official information available to the school.

## Fill application fields honestly and keep the report current

When a form asks for an actual attempt, provide its actual test date, edition, total and section values. Do not replace its weakest section with an earlier stronger one while retaining the attempt’s date. That would create a result you did not earn in that sitting.

When a programme has a superscore field, follow its instructions and use the official reported value. If its public instructions and form appear inconsistent, seek clarification with both references. A short question about the required entry is more useful than a speculative workaround that changes the meaning of the score record.

topin’s [free full-length GMAT mock](/gmat/practice-test), marked on the official scale, can test whether a targeted repair survives a complete sitting. It does not create an official superscore or an official report. Use preparation results to decide whether retaking is sensible, and provider-issued results for application reporting.

Keep your final checklist concise: eligible components, official displayed value, selected single attempt, current school policy, sending status and any later update. Recheck policies when the cycle changes. A newer reporting feature can improve the information available without removing the need for a strong complete application and accurate score entries.

## FAQs

What is GMAT Superscore?

It is an additional score using the highest eligible section scores from valid current-edition attempts. Keep it distinct from any one actual sitting.

Does it have an official percentile?

No. GMAC’s FAQ says there is no associated percentile ranking, so do not borrow one from the single-attempt table.

Can I stop it being sent?

GMAC says an available superscore is automatically included when you send a single-attempt score and cannot be opted out.

Do Yale and MIT use it the same way?

No. Yale’s current MBA guide says it considers it; MIT’s current cycle continues to focus on single-attempt results.

Can classic GMAT scores contribute?

No. The support eligibility rules exclude classic 10th Edition and expired scores.

Will schools automatically receive my improved superscore?

The support guidance says you need to send a single-attempt score again to share an updated superscore after a later attempt.
