# GMAT vs GRE vs EA vs MBA Test Waiver in 2026 | topin

## Start with your exact MBA programme, not the shortest exam

There is no universally best test route for an MBA in 2026\. The useful sequence is to establish which routes your programmes accept, identify where your own evidence is strongest, and then estimate whether you can complete that route before the deadline. Starting with a favourite exam can produce an impressive but unusable result.

Build the shortlist at programme level. Full-time MBA, executive MBA, part-time MBA and deferred admission can have different testing policies at the same school. A waiver on an executive programme’s page does not establish a waiver for its two-year full-time MBA. Similarly, acceptance of the Executive Assessment in one programme does not extend automatically across the institution.

The GMAT (formerly GMAT Focus Edition) is the 205–805 exam. GRE General Test is another accepted route at the schools checked below. The Executive Assessment, or EA, has its own content, score scale and acceptance list. A waiver removes a particular test requirement after approval; it is not another exam score that you can carry to every school.

For each programme, write the accepted tests, any waiver eligibility, centre-versus-online rule, score-validity window and decision timing. Date that note. The table here was last checked on 4 October 2026, but your application portal and current programme instructions are the final reference when you submit. That preparation prevents a format or policy mismatch from consuming the time you intended to spend on improving your candidacy.

## GMAT vs GRE vs Executive Assessment: formats and score scales

The current GMAT has three equally weighted sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights. Each lasts 45 minutes, for 135 minutes of testing and 64 questions. There is one optional ten-minute break. Section scores run from 60 to 90, while the total runs from 205 to 805.

The [GRE General Test](/gre) lasts one hour and 58 minutes. It includes one 30-minute Analytical Writing task, two Verbal sections containing 12 and 15 questions, and two Quantitative sections containing 12 and 15 questions. Verbal and Quant are each scored from 130 to 170; writing is scored from 0 to 6\. The familiar combined GRE total is the sum of the two reasoning measures, not a GMAT-equivalent scale.

EA lasts 90 minutes and contains 40 questions across Integrated Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning. Each section lasts 30 minutes. Its total scale is 100–200, with a 0–20 scale for each section. Those scores are not comparable with current GMAT totals by matching numerals or percentages.

The durations below are testing durations, not complete appointment lengths including check-in and administration. A shorter exam also does not guarantee shorter preparation. Your familiarity with its tasks and your target programme’s expectations matter more than the number of minutes printed on the booking page.

## Which schools accept each route? Current official examples

Stanford’s current MBA policy requires GMAT or GRE and explicitly does not accept EA. MIT Sloan’s current full-time instructions also require GMAT or GRE. Columbia, by contrast, accepts GMAT, GRE or EA. These examples show why “EA is only for executive MBAs” is too broad and “EA works everywhere” is equally unhelpful.

Waiver availability also varies. Tuck’s 2026–27 application announcement permits waiver consideration for applicants demonstrating quantitative and analytical capability. Darden and Emory provide current waiver-request processes. Booth has a specific UChicago educational-status exception, while its FAQ says the requirement cannot be waived for other applicants.

The MIT point deserves particular care because some general waiver roundups give a different impression. For current full-time 2027 entry, MIT’s own page says all applicants must submit a valid GMAT or GRE by the deadline. Do not import a restricted deferred-admission exception into the ordinary full-time route.

The table is a set of verified examples, not an exhaustive acceptance directory. “Not listed” means EA is not listed as a route in the checked instructions, rather than an independently confirmed universal ban. Where you qualify for an exception, confirm its exact scope and procedure. A fee-waiver code or English-language exemption is not approval to omit GMAT/GRE.

## Choose GMAT or GRE by your actual bottleneck

The GMAT’s Verbal section tests Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning, while its DI section adds data interpretation and sufficiency work. The GRE Verbal measure includes Reading Comprehension, Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence; its writing measure requires an essay. Compare those tasks directly instead of choosing from the slogan that one exam is simply easier.

If unfamiliar vocabulary repeatedly blocks your GRE sentence-based questions, estimate the preparation needed to address it. If navigating [multi-source data](/gmat/data-insights/multi-source-reasoning) and completing multi-part responses causes your GMAT DI section to run late, estimate the work needed there. A weakness in one exam’s distinctive tasks can matter more than a small difference in your first practice total.

Calculator availability is another practical difference: GRE Quant provides an on-screen calculator, while the GMAT permits its calculator only in DI, not Quant. That does not mean the GRE requires no mathematical reasoning or the GMAT requires advanced mathematics. Test whether the permitted tool helps your actual workflow rather than assuming it removes your weakest skill.

Take fresh full-length diagnostics under each test’s own timing and rules. Compare section-level evidence, the errors you understand and the time needed to improve them. Do not compare a [GMAT percentile](/articles/gmat-percentiles) and GRE percentile as if they came from the same test-taking population, or use a guessed score conversion to decide which result a school will prefer.

If both routes are accepted and one has a clearer improvement path, that is a defensible reason to choose it. If both are similar, factor in preparation already completed, available appointments and the application calendar. Avoid switching merely because the most recent practice session was disappointing.

## When the Executive Assessment is worth considering

GMAC presents EA as a way for experienced professionals to demonstrate readiness for business-school study. Its 90-minute format may suit your constraints, but the first requirement remains programme acceptance. Columbia, Darden and Emory’s checked full-time instructions accept it; Stanford’s do not.

EA is not just a shortened current GMAT. It has Integrated Reasoning rather than the current GMAT’s DI section, and its Verbal content includes Sentence Correction. Its Quantitative content includes Data Sufficiency. If your preparation has focused entirely on the current GMAT, inspect EA’s official content and sample material before assuming the shorter test requires no new work.

Its navigation also needs practice. GMAC’s EA FAQ describes six modules across the three sections and allows review within the current module; after moving to the next module, you cannot return to the previous one. Do not carry the current GMAT’s end-of-section review-and-three-edits process into an EA practice attempt.

Use school-specific EA evidence where it exists. McCombs’ Class of 2027 profile reports an EA median of 155, and Tepper reports a median of 156\. These are benchmarks for included EA submitters, not universal EA cutoffs or conversions to a GMAT target. A score of 155 cannot be called equivalent to a particular current GMAT total using those separate class medians.

Consider EA when it meets your shortlist’s rules and a fresh diagnostic suggests a suitable preparation path. If it would force you to remove a priority programme, compare that cost with the time saved before booking. A convenient exam is useful only if it serves the application you actually want to submit.

## When a test waiver is a credible route

A waiver asks the school to assess readiness without requiring its usual test score. It does not eliminate the need to demonstrate academic preparation. A strong request makes the evidence easy to evaluate: relevant transcript performance, analytical responsibilities and other qualifications that the programme explicitly considers.

Darden’s current FAQ describes factors including a strong undergraduate record, analytical coursework, advanced study and professional experience. It says these are assessed in combination. Emory’s 2026–27 process requires a conferred bachelor’s degree and at least two years of post-undergraduate full-time professional experience to submit the waiver application. Meeting an application condition is not the same as receiving approval.

Describe your work concretely. “Analytical role” gives little information; explain the kind of reasoning or quantitative responsibility involved and support it with the required documents. Follow the school’s form instead of sending an improvised substitute. If your transcript already contains a weakness, consider whether the waiver evidence actually answers that weakness or whether a strong test result would provide clearer additional information.

Do not assume a waiver approved at one school transfers to another. Nor should you infer an automatic scholarship advantage or penalty without a programme’s published rule. Darden says waiver approval or denial is not itself indicative of admission competitiveness. Where funding is central to your decision, check the school’s specific scholarship instructions alongside the admissions route.

Keep a fallback until approval arrives. If your shortlist contains a test-required programme, a waiver elsewhere does not remove the need to prepare for that programme. The best route can be a mixed shortlist: an accepted test for some applications and approved waivers for others.

## Retakes and waiver decisions need different calendar buffers

The GMAT requires at least 16 calendar days between attempts, with up to five attempts in any rolling 12 months and no lifetime cap since GMAC dropped its old eight-attempt limit. ETS permits GRE General Test retakes every 21 days, up to five in a continuous rolling 12-month period. Those are minimum retake intervals, not recommended preparation durations or guarantees that an appointment will be available.

Waiver timing follows a different clock. Darden recommends requesting a waiver at least three to four weeks before your target round and gives an average decision time of ten to fourteen business days. Emory’s current process also gives approximately ten to fourteen business days. Count business days carefully, and keep time to respond if approval is not granted.

For Emory’s two-year MBA, the current published Round 2 waiver-request date is 1 December 2026 and the application deadline is 6 January 2027\. These are programme-specific dates, not a general MBA calendar. Tuck’s current Round 2 application deadline is 5 January 2027, while MIT’s is 12 January 2027\. Different schools in the same shortlist need separate schedule entries.

An exam appointment just before the deadline may leave no practical retake or reporting buffer. GMAC says official reports normally arrive in three to five days but can occasionally take up to 20\. Check whether your school allows self-reporting at submission and when the official report must arrive. A reporting allowance does not change an exam’s minimum retake interval.

## Check online rules and score-reporting policy before booking

Online availability and school acceptance are separate questions. MIT Sloan, for example, accepts both centre and online GMAT/GRE results, while [ISB PGP and IIM Ahmedabad PGPX](/articles/gmat-score-isb-iim) require centre-based scores. If your shortlist combines those programmes, choosing a centre-based result may satisfy more of it with one test.

For GMAT Online in India, do not rely on an old Aadhaar guide. mba.com’s policy update says Aadhaar stopped being accepted for online appointments from 12 June 2025\. Check the live ID requirements and testing environment for the format you choose. A familiar domestic ID is not automatically valid for every online assessment.

Reporting rules also differ by school. Emory asks applicants with multiple attempts to submit all scores; other programmes describe their own highest-score or single-attempt treatment. Follow each programme’s instructions rather than assuming that the exam owner’s score-send options define the complete application disclosure requirement.

GMAT Superscore is another current distinction. GMAC says it has no associated percentile ranking and accompanies a valid single-attempt score. MIT currently continues to focus on single attempts, Kellogg requires a single sitting and Booth does not accept superscores. Columbia says it will not combine subscores into a composite. Before relying on your strongest sections across attempts, confirm what your intended programme actually evaluates.

## Make the decision with a small, evidence-based plan

First, remove routes that fail a priority programme’s rules. If all priority programmes accept GMAT and GRE, compare those two with fresh timed diagnostics. Add EA only if its acceptance and format suit the shortlist. Apply for waivers where your documented readiness supports the programme’s procedure, while protecting a test fallback where necessary.

Second, compare improvement paths rather than raw scale numbers. Identify the recurring errors, the preparation you would need to fix them and the effect on your application schedule. Do not choose the exam because a website promises a high converted score or because another applicant obtained a waiver with a superficially similar job title.

Third, set a stopping rule and a review date. Choose a personal target using [directly published current-format class profiles](/articles/gmat-score-m7) where available. Decide when you will assess whether the preparation is progressing and when further switching would cost more time than it saves. These are planning choices, not official school requirements.

topin has [free full-length GMAT](/gmat/practice-test) and GRE mocks, timed like test day and scored on the official scales, with explanations. Use them to compare your actual performance under each format, then study the causes of the gap. A diagnostic is useful when it leads to a decision, rather than another round of exam-shopping.

Finally, keep the route and the application story connected. The test or waiver demonstrates one part of readiness. Your goals, experience and reasons for choosing the programme still need their own evidence. Select the route that lets you present that complete application accurately and on time.

* Programme rules first: record accepted tests and exact waiver conditions.
* Fresh diagnostics next: identify the more workable improvement path.
* Calendar check: protect reporting, retake and waiver-decision time.
* Final verification: follow each school’s current score and format instructions.

## FAQs

Is GMAT or GRE better for MBA admission in 2026?

Choose among the tests accepted by your exact programmes, using your own timed performance and preparation needs. A published exam submission share is not evidence that one test gives higher admission odds.

Can I use the Executive Assessment for a full-time MBA?

Yes, where the programme explicitly accepts it, including the checked Columbia, Darden and Emory routes. Stanford’s full-time MBA explicitly does not accept it.

Is the Executive Assessment easier than GMAT?

It is shorter at 90 minutes, but has distinct content and navigation. Difficulty and preparation needs depend on your strengths, so compare fresh diagnostic work.

Does MIT Sloan accept GMAT waivers in 2026?

Its current full-time MBA instructions for 2027 entry require all applicants to submit a valid GMAT or GRE. Do not generalise a policy from another admissions route.

Can I apply to an MBA without any admissions test?

Possibly, if that programme offers a route you qualify for and grants any required waiver approval. A waiver does not transfer automatically between schools.

How early should I request a test waiver?

Use the programme’s own timeline. Darden recommends at least three to four weeks before the target round; Emory publishes separate waiver-request and application dates.

Can I take GMAT or GRE online for Indian MBA programmes?

Check the exact programme: ISB PGP and IIM Ahmedabad PGPX currently require centre-based scores. Online availability from the test owner is not enough.

Can GMAT Superscore replace my single-attempt result?

Do not assume so. GMAC sends it with a valid single-attempt score, and schools publish different policies for considering it.
