## What changed on 1 August 2026

What counts is the day you register, not the day you sit the test. Registrations completed on or after 1 August 2026 pay the new fee, so a friend testing in September may have paid $220 if they booked in July. This guide covers the GRE General Test; the Subject Tests are priced separately.

__GRE General Test registration fee, from ETS's fee page, checked 4 October 2026__
| Item | Before 1 August 2026 | From 1 August 2026 | Change |
| --------------------------------------------------- | -------------------- | ------------------ | ---------------------------------- |
| General Test, all areas except China | $220 | $249 | +$29 (about 13%) |
| Same fee with the 4% online service fee, before tax | $228.80 | $258.96 | +$30.16 |
| General Test, China | Not compared here | $237.86 | Check the China registration route |

Some ETS regional pages, including the India GRE overview, still show the old $220 figure in places. The main fee page lists $249 with the 1 August effective date, and that is the schedule to budget from. If a search result shows a cheaper price, treat it as out of date until your ETS checkout says otherwise.

## Every extra charge and what it buys

__ETS GRE General Test service fees, checked 4 October 2026__
| Service | Fee | When you would pay it |

| Rescheduling (outside China) | $55 | Moving your appointment to a new date before the deadline |
| Rescheduling (China) | $55.43 | The same service on the China fee schedule |
| Test centre change | $55 | Moving to a different centre |
| Additional Score Report | $40 per recipient | Sending scores after test day, or to more than the four free recipients |
| [Analytical Writing](/gre/analytical-writing) score review | $60 | Asking ETS to review your essay score |
| Score reinstatement | $50 | Restoring scores you cancelled at the end of the test, within 60 days |
| Question-and-answer review | $50 | Verbal and Quant only; New York State residents only |
| Diagnostic Service | Free | Seeing which question types and difficulty levels you got right or wrong |

Each service solves a different problem. A score report sends a result you already have; a writing review re-examines only the essay; reinstatement restores a cancelled score but is not another attempt. Work out which outcome you actually need before paying.

Your registration includes up to four score recipients chosen on test day. ETS's fee page lists no late-registration fee, international surcharge or separate at-home price for the General Test, so don't add those to your budget unless your own checkout shows them.

## When each charge can hit: a GRE fee timeline

Most surprise costs come from timing: a reschedule after you booked too early, or score reports ordered after test day. Lay the charges out in the order they can happen and most of them become avoidable.

## The 4% service fee, tax and worked totals

ETS's 2026–27 GRE Information Bulletin says the final charge includes a non-refundable 4% online service fee. On $249 that is $9.96, giving $258.96\. You may see $268.92 quoted elsewhere, but that is not $249 plus 4%; if your checkout is higher, look for tax or another item on the order.

__Example online totals, calculated 4 October 2026; excludes tax and currency conversion__
| Booking scenario | Listed fees | With 4% service fee |
| -------------------------------------- | ------------------ | ------------------- |
| One attempt; four free recipients only | $249 | $258.96 |
| One attempt; two paid recipients | $249 + $80 = $329 | $342.16 |
| One attempt; one reschedule | $249 + $55 = $304 | $316.16 |
| Two attempts; no paid reports | $498 | $517.92 |
| Two attempts; four paid reports | $498 + $160 = $658 | $684.32 |

These totals assume the 4% applies to every transaction, which is how the bulletin words it. ETS adds tax in some places, including the United States, so your payment screen is the final word. If a parent or sponsor is paying, send them the full checkout amount rather than the headline $249.

## GRE fees in INR: what we could and couldn't confirm

We could not confirm an official post-increase INR price on 4 October 2026\. The ETS fee pages we opened, including the India-region version, list only US dollar amounts and send Indian test takers to ETS India for local payment details. Rupee figures on consultancy sites vary, and none we saw linked to an ETS page showing them.

ETS India's payment terms say online registrants "may be given the option to pay in Indian Rupees". So the honest answer is: open your ETS account, go to checkout, and read the INR total there before paying. A locally set rupee price is not necessarily today's dollar fee times the exchange rate, and it may already include tax, so don't add a guessed GST figure on top.

If your order ends up in US dollars, your bank sets the conversion rate and may add a foreign-transaction charge. Ask your card provider for both before you pay, and keep those charges as a separate line in your budget so refunds are easier to reconcile.

## Paying without a hitch

Payment options depend on your country and booking route, so use the methods your checkout offers rather than a list from someone else's booking. Before paying, check the test type, delivery mode (home or centre), date, time zone and location on the order summary. A successful payment doesn't prove you picked the right appointment.

* Check the currency and full order total before confirming.
* Apply a fee reduction voucher before paying and confirm the total drops.
* If no confirmation arrives, check your ETS account before paying again.
* Save the appointment number and receipt together.
* Never share your ETS login with anyone offering to book more cheaply.

If a payment fails but money has left your account, give ETS and your bank the transaction details rather than opening a second ETS account. Your score history and ID details need to stay on one account.

## How the $100 Fee Reduction Program works

An approved ETS Fee Reduction Voucher brings the General Test down to $100, saving $149 on the $249 fee. It is for specific eligible groups, mostly in the US, not a general student discount.

__Fee Reduction Program routes, from ETS's fee page, checked 4 October 2026__
| Route | Who qualifies | Evidence |
| --------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Financial need | US citizens or resident aliens who are college seniors receiving US undergraduate financial aid, or unenrolled graduates who applied for aid; testing in the US, Puerto Rico, Guam or US Virgin Islands | FAFSA Submission Summary with a Student Aid Index of zero or less |
| Unemployment | US citizens or resident aliens aged 18+, unemployed within the past six months | Unemployment Benefits Statement from the past 90 days |
| Peace Corps | Active Peace Corps Volunteers | Signed Description of Service on Peace Corps letterhead |
| Partner organisations | Members of listed programmes such as NSBE, QuestBridge and GAIN | Ask your programme coordinator for a voucher |

ETS emails voucher numbers within two weeks of approval, so apply well before you need a date and before you pay; a voucher doesn't refund a full-price booking you've already made. Approved General Test applicants also get two POWERPREP PLUS practice tests and ScoreItNow essay practice.

If you're studying in India without US citizenship or residency, the individual financial-need and unemployment routes won't apply. A partner organisation is the only other route, and only if you're a member.

## Rescheduling versus cancelling: protect your money

Cancel at least four days before your test date and ETS refunds half the test fee: $124.50 on a $249 booking. The 4% service fee isn't refunded. ETS India's terms set the same four-day deadline and 50% refund. Use the deadline shown in your account, especially if you're booking across time zones.

If you still plan to test, rescheduling for $55 costs much less than losing $124.50 by cancelling and rebooking. Either way, act before the deadline: after it, there is no refund.

## The cheapest route is one well-prepared attempt

First check that your target programmes [actually use the GRE](/articles/gre-required-ms-us-2026); many master's programmes make it optional or ignore it. Then pick your four free recipients before test day, with their institution codes ready, so you don't pay $40 a time to send scores later.

Most of all, book when your practice scores say you're ready, because a second attempt doubles the bill. [topin's free GRE mock](/gre/practice-test) is timed like test day and scored on the official scale with explanations, so you can see where you stand before spending $249\. Back it up with ETS's free POWERPREP tests.
