## The rules that determine your next move

Three different clocks matter: how long a score remains reportable, when another test is permitted and when a university needs the result. None replaces the others. A score can still be valid while being too late for a particular deadline; a legal retake can still leave too little time for reporting.

__ETS General Test policies checked on 4 October 2026__
| Policy | Current rule | Practical consequence |
| ----------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Score validity | Five years following the test date | Check the exact last reportable date before ordering an old score. |
| Minimum retake interval | Once every 21 days | Count from the previous test date, not from score release. |
| Rolling attempt limit | Five tests in any continuous 365-day period | A new calendar year does not reset your allowance. |
| Cancelled attempt | Still counts towards the retake rules | Cancelling does not create another available attempt. |
| Test location | Retake rules apply to the General Test at home and at a centre | Changing location does not create a separate allowance. |
| Official results | Available 8–10 days after testing | Leave time for the programme’s own receipt and matching process. |

These are General Test rules. The Subject Tests have their own retake interval, so do not borrow a Subject Test calendar for an MS application requiring the General Test. ETS publishes a rolling limit rather than a five-attempt lifetime allowance. Keep your test history even when you no longer intend to use a result.

Use the rules to answer a specific question: can I submit an existing eligible score, or do I have enough time and a clear reason to sit again? Retaking simply because another appointment is available can consume money, preparation time and a slot that would have been more useful later.

## Five years from the test date, with an exact reporting cutoff

Validity starts on the day you took the GRE, not the day you downloaded the report or first sent it to a university. So a test taken in July 2022 stays reportable until July 2027, and sending it to a university in 2026 doesn’t restart the clock.

For your own result, use the date checker on ETS’s Getting Your Scores page and confirm the record in your account. This is especially useful near an anniversary or for a date involving a leap year. Save the displayed reporting cutoff alongside the original test date; avoid relying on a spreadsheet formula alone.

ETS reportability and a programme’s acceptance policy are separate checks. Read the exact programme’s instructions for the intended intake. Look for whether scores must be valid at application, at the submission deadline or at another stated point. If the wording is unclear, ask admissions which date they use and keep the answer with your application notes.

Do not assume a score already received by an institution will satisfy every later application there. A new programme, intake or application may have a different rule. Equally, there is no reason to retake solely because a valid score is several years old if the programme accepts it and it represents your preparation well.

* Record the original test date and ETS’s exact final reporting date.
* Check the programme’s score-age wording for your application cycle.
* Send early enough for the additional-report processing time.
* Confirm receipt in the application portal rather than treating an order confirmation as proof of receipt.

## What ScoreSelect lets you send

ScoreSelect chooses dates, not individual questions or sections. Your available choices depend on whether you are choosing recipients on test day or ordering a report later. ETS includes up to four recipients in the test fee when you designate them on test day; an ordinary later Additional Score Report [costs US$40 per recipient](/articles/gre-fees-2026).

__ScoreSelect choices for the General Test__
| When and option | What the recipient receives | How to use it |
| --------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------ | --------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Test day: Most Recent | Scores from the test you have just taken | Use for the current result if it meets your reporting plan. |
| Test day: All | All reportable General Test administrations in the last five years | Use where a programme requires all attempts. |
| After test day: Most Recent | Your latest General Test administration | Check that the latest date is actually the result you want. |
| After test day: All | All administrations within the reportable five-year history | Review the destination’s all-score requirement. |
| After test day: Any | One or several selected reportable administrations | Use to select an older result or a chosen combination of dates. |

For example, suppose your first test has the stronger quantitative score and your second has the stronger verbal score. If you prefer the first complete result, the later Any option lets you select that administration. Choosing Most Recent would send the second one instead. Review the selected dates before paying.

Some programmes require every GRE administration. ETS explicitly advises checking this requirement, even though its reporting service allows selection. A programme’s instruction to disclose all attempts still matters when an application form asks you for test history. ScoreSelect is not permission to give an incomplete answer to that question.

The four ordinary included reports are a test-day choice, not credits you can save indefinitely. You can choose not to send at that moment and decide later, but budget for the later report. Before the test, write down institution and department details from the programme’s own instructions so you are not making a rushed choice after almost two hours of testing.

## ScoreSelect does not create a superscore

ETS requires the scores from any selected test administration to be reported together. You cannot ask ETS to combine Quantitative Reasoning from one date, Verbal Reasoning from another and Analytical Writing from a third into a new result. Selecting two dates produces results from two administrations, rather than a manufactured best-section score.

Consider this invented planning example: attempt A is V158, Q169 and Writing 4.0; attempt B is V163, Q165 and Writing 4.5\. You can send A, B or both through the appropriate selection option. You cannot order an ETS report for a single V163/Q169/Writing 4.5 administration because you never earned that combination on one date.

A department may explain how it evaluates multiple results. Follow that published policy; do not assume all programmes take the highest section scores or always favour the highest verbal-plus-quantitative total. Where there is no explanation, asking how multiple reports are reviewed is more useful than relying on a forum’s general rule.

Your personal test-taker report and an institution report also differ. The personal record includes your cumulative reportable history and recipient information. ETS says the institution report contains the dates and scores you selected, without other recipients, unselected results or an indication of other GRE tests. If an application asks you to upload your personal report, check its instructions rather than assuming the document has the same contents as a ScoreSelect delivery.

For each destination, note the dates you chose and the reporting option. This makes a later correction or receipt enquiry much easier, particularly if you send different eligible administrations to different programmes.

## How the 21-day rule and rolling limit work together

Both retake constraints must be satisfied. A 21-day gap is necessary but is not enough when five attempts already fall inside the relevant rolling year. The interval is measured between tests; waiting for official results does not start a new 21-day countdown.

__Illustrative calendar: no earlier tests, every attempt 21 days apart__
| Attempt | Illustrative test date | Eligibility under these two rules |
| -------------- | ---------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| First | 4 October 2026 | First attempt in this example. |
| Second | 25 October 2026 | 21 days after the first; two tests in the rolling window. |
| Third | 15 November 2026 | 21 days after the second; three tests in the rolling window. |
| Fourth | 6 December 2026 | 21 days after the third; four tests in the rolling window. |
| Fifth | 27 December 2026 | 21 days after the fourth; five tests in the rolling window. |
| Proposed sixth | 17 January 2027 | Not permitted: the 21-day gap is met, but five earlier tests remain in the rolling window. |

These dates demonstrate the rules, not a recommended preparation schedule or a promise of available appointments. In the example, January does not reset the count. To determine a later eligible date, check when an earlier attempt leaves the rolling window and confirm eligibility in your ETS account. Include every relevant test before this example if your actual history differs.

The same allowance follows you between at-home and test-centre appointments. Do not create another account or change personal information to bypass it. The bulletin says a violation can be enforced after results have already been reported, with invalid scores cancelled and recipients notified.

Cancelled scores count too. If a disappointing October attempt is cancelled, its date still occupies one of the five slots and still sets the earliest retake interval. Write it in your calendar immediately. The absence of a usable result is not the absence of a test attempt.

## Work backwards from the reporting deadline

For a new General Test, ETS currently publishes official score availability of 8–10 days after the test. It sends official reports to recipients selected on test day at that time. The unofficial verbal and quantitative numbers shown at the end are useful for planning, but the Analytical Writing result arrives with the official scores.

__Reporting timelines: separate ETS processing from university receipt__
| Action | ETS timing or limit | What to plan |
| ---------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| New test on 4 October 2026 | Official results normally 12–14 October: 8–10 days later | Illustrative dates, not a guaranteed release appointment. |
| Recipients designated on test day | Official reports sent when results become available | Do not automatically add the later-order timeline to these reports. |
| Additional report for an available score | Approximately five business days to process | Allow for weekends, holidays and programme matching. |
| Order near score expiry | Processing must finish while the score remains reportable | Do not place an order on the final date and assume it will be sent. |
| Reinstate a voluntarily cancelled result | Approximately two weeks after requesting reinstatement | Treat this as a separate process, not normal new-score release. |

An application deadline can mean submission of the form, self-reported scores or receipt of official reports. Those are different events. Make a destination-specific checklist and record what the programme actually requires. Where it allows self-reporting first, that can change your application sequence; it does not change ETS’s reporting rules.

Do not promise yourself that the fastest published processing time is the time you will receive. Leave a buffer appropriate to the programme’s deadline and monitor the portal. A pending score, an unmatched name or an incorrect recipient is much easier to address before the closing date.

Once an Additional Score Report order is submitted, ETS says it cannot be cancelled, changed or refunded. Review the institution code, any department selection and the chosen administrations before placing it. If your name has changed since testing, contact GRE Services for assistance rather than assuming the report will match automatically.

## Cancelling and reinstating a result

At the end of the General Test, you choose to view/report or cancel your scores. Once you view them, you cannot cancel them. You also cannot cancel just one section. If you voluntarily cancel, those scores are unavailable for your review and are not added to the reportable history; there is no refund.

Distinguish cancelling scores from declining to send them immediately. You can view a result, retain it and choose no recipients at that point. Subject to a programme’s all-attempts instructions, ScoreSelect then lets you decide which administrations to report later. This gives you more information than discarding a result because one section felt difficult.

If you change your mind about a result you voluntarily cancelled, ETS permits a reinstatement request within 60 days after the test date through your account. The current fee is US$50\. The bulletin allows up to four free recipients to be designated during reinstatement; it describes approximately two weeks for reinstatement and reporting, with delivery to the recipients shortly afterwards.

This process concerns your own end-of-test cancellation. Do not assume it reverses a cancellation imposed by ETS for a policy violation or a security decision. Nor should you plan to use reinstatement as a last-minute reporting shortcut: it adds a separate request, a fee and its own processing period.

If a deadline is close, compare keeping the existing result with taking another test. Cancelling a score does not refund the test payment, erase the attempt or postpone the programme’s deadline. It is a consequential choice, so decide your reporting plan before test day rather than immediately after a stressful section.

## Choose between using an old score and retaking

Start with the programme list. For a course that [does not consider GRE scores](/articles/gre-required-ms-us-2026), a retake cannot supply a considered GRE result. For a required or optional score, check the age rule and whether your existing complete administration supports the application. Avoid comparing yourself with an invented universal MS cutoff.

A retake is easier to justify when [fresh timed work](/gre/practice-test) shows a repeatable improvement and you can explain what changed: fewer avoidable quantitative errors, better passage accuracy or more reliable pacing. One unusually high practice result is weak evidence. Use new material and review mistakes before deciding that another paid appointment is worthwhile.

Keep a reporting budget alongside [the study plan](/articles/gre-study-plan). Two later reports cost US$80 and five cost US$200 at US$40 per recipient, before ETS’s 4% online service fee. Sending unnecessary dates to unnecessary destinations creates expense without fixing an application weakness.

* Check whether the exact programme considers GRE scores for your intake.
* Confirm the existing score’s reportability and the programme’s age rule.
* Count all tests in the rolling window, including cancelled attempts.
* Check a prospective retake against both the interval and reporting deadline.
* Choose whole administrations according to the programme’s reporting instructions.
* Review recipient details, place reports early and confirm portal receipt.

The strongest plan is the one you can complete with the evidence and time available. A valid, suitable result already in hand can be more useful than an ambitious retake arriving after the deadline. When you do retake, preserve that existing option while you prepare rather than treating each new booking as a replacement for every earlier result.

## FAQs

How long is a GRE score valid in 2026?

GRE scores are reportable for five years following the test date. Use ETS’s date checker for the exact last reportable day and separately check your programme’s score-age policy.

Can I take the GRE more than five times in my lifetime?

ETS’s General Test limit is five attempts in any rolling 365-day period, rather than five over your lifetime. Each test must also satisfy the 21-day interval.

Can I retake the GRE after 21 days at a different centre?

Yes, if you also remain within the five-test rolling limit and can book an available appointment. A different centre or switching to [the at-home test](/articles/gre-at-home-2026) does not reset either rule.

Do cancelled GRE scores count towards the five attempts?

Yes. ETS applies both retake restrictions even when you cancelled the scores from a previous attempt.

Can I combine my best GRE section scores with ScoreSelect?

No. ETS reports a selected administration’s scores together; you cannot create one result from sections taken on different dates. Check how each programme evaluates multiple complete administrations.

Will universities see the GRE scores I did not select?

ETS says its institution report omits unselected scores and does not indicate other GRE tests. A programme may still require all attempts or ask for your test history, so follow its application instructions.

Can I send my four free GRE reports after test day?

The ordinary four included reports are selected on test day. Reports ordered later cost US$40 per recipient; score reinstatement has its own separate recipient provision.

Can I get a voluntarily cancelled GRE score back?

ETS allows reinstatement within 60 days after the test date for US$50\. Allow approximately two weeks for processing and follow the recipient instructions when making the request.
