# IELTS Academic or General: Study and PR in 2026 | topin

On this page

## Start with the recipient, not which test sounds harder

Academic and General Training are different evidence products. They share Listening and Speaking, but Reading and Writing differ. A stronger score in the wrong version does not satisfy a rule requiring the other version. The safest booking decision starts with the organisation that will receive your result and the exact purpose of the application.

A country name is not enough. “IELTS for Canada” can mean undergraduate admission, a study permit, a post-graduation work permit or permanent residence through Express Entry. Those recipients do not all ask for the same evidence. Likewise, an Australian university can require Academic even when Home Affairs accepts General Training for a visa.

There are also three naming layers to keep apart. Academic or General Training describes the test type. “For UKVI” describes the approved security product. [Computer Writing or Writing on Paper](/articles/ielts-writing-paper-vs-computer) describes delivery. You may need Academic for UKVI on computer; the word “computer” alone does not establish that you booked the required type or security product.

Use the matrix below as a first filter, then confirm on the official page for your course or visa. Detailed band scores for every route are in our [IELTS visa band requirements guide](/articles/ielts-visa-band-requirements).

## Goal × country matrix: UK, Canada and Australia

| ------------------------------------------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| UK — degree admission and Student route | Academic as required by the institution; UKVI Academic if a SELT is required | Visa level B2; IELTS for UKVI B2 = 5.5 in every skill. The course can set a higher floor. | HEP assessment may use other accepted evidence; IELTS Online is not a SELT. |
| UK — below-degree study using a SELT | Approved IELTS for UKVI product specified by the sponsor | Visa level B1; IELTS for UKVI = 4.0 in every skill | Do not substitute an ordinary or at-home result for the required SELT. |
| UK — new Skilled Worker application | IELTS for UKVI Academic or General Training if using IELTS as the SELT | Normally B2 = 5.5 in every skill from 8 January 2026; transitional cases differ | Use the approved product and centre; check eligibility before choosing OSR. |
| Canada — university admission | Academic when the university requires IELTS | No universal university band; UBC undergraduate example: 6.5 overall, each skill at least 6.0 | UBC explicitly rejects OSR; check each institution’s mode policy. |
| Canada — regular study permit | Follow admission and applicable IRCC document requirements | The general documents page does not establish one national IELTS band for every applicant | Do not reuse closed SDS rules as a 2026 national minimum. |
| Canada — Express Entry PR | General Training only if using IELTS | FSW: CLB 7; CEC and FST thresholds differ by programme | Academic and IELTS One Skill Retake are not accepted for Express Entry. |
| Canada — PGWP language evidence | General Training if using IELTS | Usually CLB 7 for university categories; CLB 5 for college/non-university categories | Tests should be in person; results less than 2 years old at application. |
| Australia — university admission | Academic if required by the course | Course-specific overall and component floors | A university’s Online/OSR policy is independent of the visa rule. |
| Australia — Student subclass 500 | Academic or General Training for visa evidence; Academic may also be needed for admission | Standard overall 6.0; eligible packages may use 5.5 or 5.0 | At-home tests are rejected; follow the subclass’s evidence conditions. |
| Australia — Temporary Graduate subclass 485 | Academic or General Training | Usual requirement: overall 6.5, every skill at least 5.5; passport exceptions exist | Current stream pages accept OSR completed before lodgement; check the 12-month evidence window. |
| Australia — skilled migration English categories | Academic or General Training | Competent 6 each; proficient 7 each; superior 8 each | Eligible visa rules and any skills-assessment body must both be checked. |

The UK below-degree row does not recommend General Training for every foundation or pathway course. A sponsor may specify Academic evidence for its course even where the visa level is B1\. Similarly, the Australia Student row describes the government test list, not what every course will accept for admission. Where the two recipients differ, you need a report that satisfies both or separate evidence.

“PR” is not a single global English standard. Canada Express Entry uses programme-specific CLB levels, while Australian skilled migration distinguishes English categories and subclass requirements. UK settlement may use a different English evidence route, including speaking-and-listening products, so it should not be reduced to a generic General Training score.

## What actually differs between Academic and General Training

| Speaking | Same 3-part interview; 11–14 minutes | Same 3-part interview; 11–14 minutes |
| Typical official band-7 Reading benchmark | About 30 correct out of 40 | About 35 correct out of 40 |

Those Reading figures are IELTS’s published averages, and they show why “General Training is easier” is only half true: the texts are more everyday, but you need about five more correct answers for band 7\. Either way, the version you need is decided by your recipient, not by difficulty.

The largest preparation change for someone switching versions is often Task 1\. A graph response needs selected main features and an overview; a letter needs the appropriate purpose, requested content and tone. An Academic graph response is not a reusable template for a General Training letter. Listening and Speaking practice can transfer more directly because the tests are shared.

An [overall band calculator](/ielts/band-score-calculator) cannot convert an Academic report into General Training. It can check the arithmetic of four component scores, but the test identity remains unchanged. If you are moving from an admission goal to an immigration goal, inspect the required product before assuming that an excellent existing result covers the new application.

## UK: Academic, General Training and UKVI answer different questions

For degree-level study, GOV.UK requires English equivalent to CEFR B2\. A Higher Education Provider can assess a degree-level student’s English itself, which may involve a different accepted test or evidence route. That is why ordinary IELTS Academic can appear in a university’s admission instructions without every student needing a separate UKVI test.

If your sponsor or route requires a Secure English Language Test, use an approved IELTS for UKVI product and centre. IELTS’s UKVI guidance lists both Academic and General Training versions. The visa requirement and the course requirement need to be read together: a course that asks for Academic is not satisfied merely because General Training is an approved SELT.

For a new Skilled Worker application, current GOV.UK guidance normally requires B2 in all four skills. The key change took effect on 8 January 2026\. Some people extending or updating a Skilled Worker permission held before that date remain under B1 provisions. Check the transition described for your circumstances instead of using a pre-2026 B1 table for a new application.

IELTS for UKVI Life Skills is different again. It tests Speaking and Listening and reports a pass/fail outcome, rather than providing the four Academic component bands a university may need. Do not choose it simply because its name includes UKVI. Write down the sponsor’s required test and the visa evidence route before completing registration.

## Canada: Academic for admission does not become General Training for PR

IRCC’s Express Entry page is explicit: IELTS candidates must take General Training, and IELTS One Skill Retake is not accepted. The English alternatives listed are CELPIP-General and PTE Core. PTE Academic and IELTS Academic are not interchangeable with these immigration products.

The minimum depends on the Express Entry programme. Federal Skilled Worker uses CLB 7 in each ability for the first official language. Canadian Experience Class uses CLB 7 for TEER 0 or 1 occupations and CLB 5 for TEER 2 or 3\. Federal Skilled Trades uses CLB 5 for Speaking and Listening and CLB 4 for Reading and Writing. These are eligibility thresholds, not a guarantee of an invitation.

University admission is separate. UBC’s undergraduate English page, for example, requires IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no part below 6.0 and excludes General Training and OSR. That is a specific institution’s requirement, not a nationwide admission or study-permit band. Other programmes may have different floors or accepted evidence.

The Student Direct Stream ended on 8 November 2024\. Its old test rules should not be presented as the standard 2026 rule for all study permits. Use the regular study-permit document instructions, the local requirements that apply to your application and your institution’s admission conditions.

Post-graduation work is another later checkpoint. Current PGWP document guidance specifies IELTS General Training if using IELTS, with in-person testing and results under two years old. Its eligibility page generally requires CLB 7 for university categories and CLB 5 for college or non-university categories, with exceptions and other eligibility conditions. An Academic admission result should not be assumed to meet this later requirement.

## Australia: both versions can satisfy a visa, but check admission and registration

Home Affairs lists both IELTS Academic and General Training for the Student visa (subclass 500), with the same thresholds for each: 6.0 overall as standard, lower with a qualifying English-course package.

An Australian university can nevertheless require Academic for entry to its degree. If you intend to use one result for admission and visa evidence, check the course’s Academic and component requirements first. A General Training result might satisfy the listed visa threshold while failing the university’s test-type requirement.

Temporary Graduate subclass 485 also lists Academic and General Training, usually requiring 6.5 overall and at least 5.5 in each skill. Its current stream pages explicitly accept OSR completed before application lodgement. Passport-specific exceptions exist, and the evidence window is usually the twelve months immediately before application. Do not apply a generic two-year university rule to that visa.

For skilled migration, the Home Affairs English categories are based on each component: competent means at least 6, proficient at least 7, and superior at least 8\. Both IELTS versions are listed. The relevant subclass and any skills-assessment or professional body can add conditions. A nurse, engineer or teacher should check the regulator or assessment body as well as Home Affairs before selecting General Training.

At-home English tests are not accepted as Australian visa evidence. IELTS on computer at a centre and IELTS Online at home are different services. A university’s acceptance of a remote result, if any, does not change the government’s test-delivery restriction.

## Three planning examples: avoid paying for the wrong report

__Illustrative decisions using the verified rules — checked 4 October 2026__
| Applicant’s goal | First decision | Later checkpoint |
| ---------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Canadian degree now, Express Entry later | Use Academic if the degree requires it | Budget and prepare for an accepted General Training or other approved immigration test later; check validity then. |
| Australian degree, then subclass 485 | Use Academic if required for admission; ensure the visa threshold is covered | An older admission score may fall outside the 485 evidence window; check the current stream rules. |
| UK degree with sponsor assessment | Ask how the sponsor will evidence B2 and whether it requires UKVI Academic | Use the product stated in the admission and sponsorship instructions; do not book Life Skills by mistake. |

One report can serve several recipients if its version, scores and date suit all of them. Check each one rather than assuming the same country means the same rule.

If PR is years away, do not book a General Training test now to “cover” it. Express Entry results must be under two years old when you apply, so a test taken too early will simply expire.

## Your booking checklist and preparation plan

* Name each recipient: university, immigration authority and any professional or skills-assessment body.
* Copy the exact accepted test product from each official requirement.
* Record overall and per-skill floors, delivery restrictions and the date at which the report must still be recent.
* Ask whether [One Skill Retake](/articles/ielts-one-skill-retake) is accepted if you intend to use it as a fallback.
* Check the booking confirmation for Academic or General Training and any UKVI designation.
* Practise the version-specific Reading and Task 1 content after the product choice is settled.

A sensible preparation plan preserves shared skills while changing the tasks that differ. Keep Listening accuracy and live Speaking work. If switching from Academic to General Training, rehearse letters with the right purpose and register, and use the correct Reading practice and score benchmark. If switching in the other direction, work on visual summaries and longer academic-style passages.

topin’s [free full-length IELTS Academic mock](/ielts/practice-test) can help with an Academic study goal, timed work and explanations. For a General Training booking, use official General Training material for its Reading and Task 1 differences. The aim is one correctly chosen test with a score profile that the actual recipient can accept.

## FAQs

Does Canada Express Entry accept IELTS Academic?

No. IRCC requires IELTS General Training if you use IELTS and explicitly rejects IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry.

Should I take Academic or General Training for university?

Take Academic when the university’s English requirement specifies it. Check the actual course and intake; a general visa test list does not replace admission requirements.

Can IELTS Academic be used for Australian PR?

Home Affairs lists both Academic and General Training for its skilled migration English categories. Check the relevant visa and any skills-assessment or professional body too.

Which IELTS is accepted for Australia’s 485 visa?

Current Temporary Graduate stream pages list Academic and General Training. The usual threshold is 6.5 overall with 5.5 in each skill, with exceptions and timing conditions.

Do I need IELTS for UKVI for a UK degree?

Not automatically. A degree-level Higher Education Provider can assess English itself, but if your evidence route requires a SELT, use the approved product specified by the sponsor.

Is General Training easier than Academic?

The Reading and Task 1 contexts differ, and General Training usually needs more Reading answers correct for the same band. Acceptance should decide the version.

Can I use Academic IELTS for a Canadian PGWP?

Current IRCC PGWP document guidance specifies General Training for IELTS evidence. Check the applicable language threshold and other programme conditions.

Is IELTS Online accepted for immigration?

IELTS says its Online service is not currently accepted for immigration purposes. Use the authorised test-centre product required by the relevant authority.
