## Read the course requirement and the central policy together

Start at the requirements tab for your exact Cambridge postgraduate course. The [MPhil in Advanced Computer Science page](https://www.postgraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses/directory/cscsmpacs/requirements) publishes four component scores and a total. This is a concrete example, not a university-wide band requirement. A different course can ask for a different profile, and the offer is the condition you must ultimately satisfy.

Write the four requirements in your usual order: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Cambridge course tables may list Writing before Reading. Transcribing by position instead of by the skill name creates an avoidable error, especially on courses where the floors differ. Label every number, even when the current example happens to require four identical floors.

Record the intake too. The live Advanced Computer Science page checked on 5 October 2026 describes Michaelmas 2027 entry. A cached brochure for an earlier intake should not silently replace it. Keep the course URL with your record so you can recheck the same programme before submitting evidence or buying a retake.

Use the [central postgraduate language page](https://www.postgraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/apply/before/english-language-requirements) for accepted tests, timing and submission. The course page supplies the target; the central page explains how evidence is handled. If your offer includes an individual instruction, resolve any apparent conflict with admissions before assuming the less demanding statement governs.

## Turn the requirement into a score-profile test

__Original profile examples for the ACS requirement__
| Profile | L/R/W/S | Overall | Shortfall |
| ------------------- | ----------- | ------- | ----------------- |
| Even sevens | 7/7/7/7 | 7.0 | Overall below 7.5 |
| Both conditions met | 8/7.5/7/7 | 7.5 | None numerically |
| Writing below floor | 8/8/6.5/7.5 | 7.5 | Writing below 7 |

For the Advanced Computer Science example, first check that all components reach 7.0\. Then check overall 7.5\. These are two conditions. Four bands of 7.0 produce an average of 7.0, so they satisfy the component part while missing the overall part. Saying “Cambridge needs seven in each” is an incomplete preparation target for this course.

An invented profile of Listening 8.0, Reading 7.5, Writing 7.0 and Speaking 7.0 totals 29.5\. Its average is 7.375, which IELTS reports as 7.5\. The profile therefore meets the numerical example. A report with 8.0, 8.0, 6.5 and 7.5 also gives overall 7.5 but misses Writing. Read the report as a set of compulsory conditions.

Use the [IELTS band calculator](/ielts/band-score-calculator) to inspect hypothetical totals without guessing. It cannot verify your certificate or forecast a score. Its role is to tell you whether a proposed component change crosses an overall rounding boundary. Your actual test performance and Cambridge's assessment of the report remain separate.

Keep mock profiles complete. If your best Listening came in February and your best Writing in April, combining them produces a planning scenario rather than evidence of one-session readiness. Compare fresh full attempts, especially when several components sit exactly at the required floor. Look for the repeated error explaining those borderline results.

## Use Cambridge’s own retake and delivery rules

Cambridge's central postgraduate guidance lists Academic, Academic for UKVI, One Skill Retake and IELTS Online. It also says scores from different language-test certificates cannot be combined. These statements must be read together: an eligible OSR report is a defined IELTS product; collecting preferred components from unrelated full tests is a different action.

If you intend to use OSR, check that your original booking is eligible, the retake fits the provider's window and your course or offer has no additional restriction. Ask a precise question if needed: give the course, intake, original product and proposed report type. A general reply that “IELTS is accepted” does not settle every detail of the plan.

The [One Skill Retake guide](/articles/ielts-one-skill-retake) explains provider eligibility. Use that for mechanics, then return to Cambridge for recipient acceptance. Do not assume acceptance transfers to another university on your shortlist. A permitted report for Cambridge can be excluded by another recipient, leaving you with two different evidence plans.

Likewise, accepting IELTS Online for admission does not make that remote product suitable for every immigration purpose. Follow the university's sponsorship instructions for your actual situation. Keep the ordinary language condition and the evidence used for any later application as distinct checklist entries, even when one accepted report can ultimately cover both.

## Know when evidence is needed and when it becomes too old

For most postgraduate courses, Cambridge says language evidence can follow an offer. The LLM and MCL are named exceptions requiring evidence when applying. Check the exact course rather than applying the usual timing to every programme. A funding deadline, application deadline and language-condition deadline may represent different checkpoints.

Central guidance requires a test result dated no more than two years before the course starts. The ACS course page gives a start date of 4 October 2027 for Michaelmas 2027 entry, so a test taken before 4 October 2025 would be too old for that intake. If you already have a report, compare its test date with the intended start date before spending time on submission. If it sits on a boundary, confirm the interpretation with admissions.

Build an invented calendar from a 15 July condition deadline: first accepted attempt in May, review and focused practice in early June, an available fallback in late June, then report access and upload. These dates are our planning illustration, not a Cambridge timetable. Replace them with your own offer deadline and real centre availability.

Allow room for university verification. A result visible in your provider account does not mean your Cambridge condition has been cleared. Put the upload event and the verified-condition event in separate columns. If your certificate arrives close to the deadline, contact admissions with the official document and ask what remains, without assuming that an upload timestamp guarantees completion.

## Upload the certificate through the correct account

Cambridge instructs applicants to upload a valid certificate through the Applicant Portal before submission, or through Self-Service after an offer. It verifies results online and says it cannot accept reports sent directly by IELTS or TOEFL. This differs from recipients that require provider e-delivery, so a universal “send IELTS to all universities” workflow is unsuitable here.

Keep a clean copy of the official certificate with every component, overall score, identifying details and report reference visible. Open the file after downloading it. Then check which account you are using, which course application it belongs to and what document category the portal asks for. A file in a personal folder has not yet reached admissions.

After uploading, save the submission confirmation and inspect the condition status. If the portal has not updated, use the stated contact route and include your applicant identifier, course and upload date. Make the request about a specific missing step. Sending the certificate repeatedly without explaining what happened can make your own evidence record harder to follow.

For a possible exemption, complete the questions accurately and let the university determine the requirement. Its portal estimate is useful, but retain the eventual offer condition as the working instruction. An English-medium degree, nationality and the country of study are different facts; do not merge them into one assumed exemption.

## Match preparation to the course’s complete profile

Use [topin's free IELTS Academic mock](/ielts/practice-test), marked on the official scale, for an initial timed profile. Add official tasks and descriptor-based feedback to check its interpretation. The mock should reveal the limiting condition, not become a certificate you try to submit in place of an official test.

For a Writing floor, compare both responses with feedback on task coverage, development, organisation and language. If Task 1 is missing its main summary, practise selecting that summary before drafting details. If Task 2 addresses only one requested issue, practise making a two-answer plan. Retesting without changing the persistent behaviour gives you little new information.

For a Speaking floor, record new answers and review whether a listener can follow the reasoning. Identify a concrete problem such as unclear word stress, abandoned sentences or a short explanation. Work on that feature, then test it in unfamiliar questions. Repeating the same polished answer measures familiarity more than flexible language.

If your shortlist includes Oxford, compare the [Oxford graduate IELTS rules](/articles/ielts-oxford-graduate-requirements) before choosing a fallback. Keep one row per recipient with product, profile, date and submission route. The useful end point is a valid report with all the required scores, uploaded in the required place and confirmed against your actual offer.

## FAQs

Is Cambridge postgraduate IELTS always 7.5?

No. Requirements are course-specific. The Advanced Computer Science MPhil example asks for 7.5 overall and 7.0 each; consult your own course.

Does Cambridge accept One Skill Retake?

Current central postgraduate guidance lists OSR among accepted IELTS products. Check your course and individual offer instructions too.

Can I combine two IELTS certificates?

The central guidance does not permit combining scores from different language-test certificates.

Should IELTS send my report directly to Cambridge?

Postgraduate guidance tells applicants to upload their certificate and says directly sent IELTS reports cannot be accepted.

When must I take the test?

For most courses, evidence follows an offer; LLM and MCL are exceptions. The result must also meet the course-start age rule.
