# IELTS One Skill Retake 2026: Fees and Acceptance | topin

On this page

## Check all three eligibility conditions before looking at price

You need a full IELTS on computer test taken at a centre that offers One Skill Retake, and you must sit the retake within 60 days of that original test. OSR covers Academic and General Training, and IELTS for UKVI on computer in selected locations. Now that [almost every IELTS test is on computer](/articles/ielts-2026-changes), most candidates qualify, but check that your centre takes part.

The 60 days run from your test day, not from the day results arrive, and the retake itself must fall inside the window: booking inside it is not enough. Check the last eligible date in your candidate portal and aim for a session well before it.

You can retake Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking, but only one skill, once, per original test. If two skills are below the score you need, OSR cannot fix both; a full resit is the route.

Mode matters for Writing. If you chose [Writing on Paper](/articles/ielts-writing-paper-vs-computer), a Writing retake must also be handwritten; if you typed, you type again.

## Official price by country: published figures and gaps

| Pakistan — British Council | Not shown in the July 2026 pricing PDF we checked | The PDF lists other services but no OSR fee; the remark (EOR) charge is a different service. |
| Nigeria — British Council | Not shown on the public pages we checked | Ask for a local quote; do not assume it is half the full-test fee. |
| Philippines — British Council | PHP 9,120 ordinary; PHP 10,250 UKVI | The official OSR and booking pages distinguish the two products. |
| United Kingdom — British Council | GBP 162–183 | Published range is specifically IELTS for UKVI Academic/General Training OSR; varies by location. |
| Australia — IDP IELTS | AUD 310 | Official fee and OSR pages; location-specific fees can vary. |
| Canada — IDP | CAD 199–229 plus HST | IDP Canada’s main OSR page; some provincial IDP pages and an older IDP article show other amounts, so confirm the price for your centre. |

Where we say a price is not shown, the service is still offered; the fee just was not on the public pages we checked. Ask your centre for a written quote.

Canada needs a visible caveat. IDP’s current main OSR page gives CAD 199–229 excluding HST, its older EOR-versus-OSR article gives CAD 199–299, and current provincial pages include different local amounts. These cannot honestly be reduced to one national price. Use the fee displayed for the actual centre and applicable tax; the public figures above are evidence of variation and inconsistent official copy.

Note that the UK range is for IELTS for UKVI, and the Philippine figures separate UKVI from ordinary IELTS. A cheaper retake on the wrong product is not a saving.

## Compare the extra cost with the option you can actually use

__Cost examples from published prices — checked 4 October 2026; arithmetic, not savings guarantees__
| Example | OSR | New ordinary full test | Difference in these listed fees |
| ------------------------------------ | ---------- | ---------------------- | ------------------------------------------------ |
| India — IDP ordinary IELTS | INR 12,650 | INR 19,000 | INR 6,350 less; OSR is about 67% of the full fee |
| Australia — IDP listed standard fees | AUD 310 | AUD 490 | AUD 180 less; OSR is about 63% of the full fee |

So the common claim that OSR costs “about half” a full test is wrong in both countries: it is closer to two-thirds. And if your recipient does not accept OSR, the saving is worth nothing.

Do not confuse a retake with an Enquiry on Results (EOR). OSR is a new attempt at one skill; EOR is a remark of your original test, with its own fee (INR 14,250 for IELTS on computer in India; AUD 240 in Australia).

If you are weighing both, ask your provider how they interact first. IDP, for example, asks you to wait for your remark outcome before booking an OSR against the same test, and the 60-day clock keeps running while you wait.

## Build the 60-day timeline backwards from the recipient

__Retake milestones — rules checked 4 October 2026__
| Milestone | Clock / limit | Your action |
| -------------------- | ------------------------------------ | --------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Original full test | Day 0 is the original test day | Record the date and whether the centre/product offers OSR. |
| Results released | The deadline does not restart | Compare every component with the recipient’s minimum. |
| Acceptance confirmed | Before OSR payment | Obtain the recipient’s rule for the exact product and course or visa. |
| Retake completed | Within 60 days; one skill once | Choose a date shown as eligible by the provider. |
| New report released | 3–5 days (IELTS.org) | Allow time for the recipient to receive and process the report. |
| Result age checked | Still tied to the original full test | OSR does not start a fresh two-year result-validity period. |

For planning, separate a test deadline from an application deadline. You might still be eligible to retake but have too little time for the new report to arrive before an admissions decision. Alternatively, you might have months before an application but only a few days left in the OSR window. The shorter constraint governs your immediate action.

Write a simple schedule with the original test date, the portal’s final eligible retake date, a preferred earlier retake date, the published report window and the recipient deadline. If a required appointment is unavailable, do not assume that having tried to book extends eligibility. Ask the provider about available sessions or compare a full resit.

Use the preparation days to solve the specific weakness. If a [Writing response](/ielts/writing) was unfinished, repeat both tasks under the real session limit. If Listening mistakes were mostly spelling, practise answer accuracy while listening. A single-skill booking reduces the number of sections on retake day; it does not lower the assessed standard.

## Who accepts OSR? Government rules and university examples

__OSR acceptance — primary sources checked 4 October 2026__
| Recipient / purpose | Verified position | Condition to keep |
| ------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| UKVI — approved IELTS for UKVI computer product | Accepted in selected locations | Use the eligible UKVI product and approved centre; ordinary IELTS OSR is not automatically a SELT. |
| Australia — eligible visa subclasses | Included in Home Affairs’ accepted IELTS evidence | [Check the individual subclass](/articles/ielts-visa-band-requirements) and evidence date, not just the general test list. |
| Australia — Temporary Graduate subclass 485 | Explicitly accepted on current Home Affairs stream pages | Any OSR must be completed before lodging the application; the usual scores and timing still apply. |
| IRCC — Canada Express Entry | Not accepted | [IELTS General Training](/articles/ielts-academic-vs-general) is required; an Academic or OSR report cannot replace an accepted full test. |
| University of Melbourne — published English requirement | Recognises IELTS One Skill Retake in its test conditions | Read course bands, single-report and test-location conditions. |
| UBC — undergraduate English admission standard | Explicitly does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake | Its published IELTS Academic requirement is a separate admission rule. |

These examples are intentionally mixed. A list containing only accepting universities can make acceptance look universal. UBC’s undergraduate page explicitly excludes OSR, while Melbourne’s page describes it within its accepted evidence. Check your own programme and intake, especially when a central university policy is supplemented by faculty, professional-registration or pathway requirements.

The table does not turn the Express Entry rejection into a claim about every IRCC application. Study admissions, study permits, post-graduation work permits and permanent residence are different processes. Likewise, an Australian general test list is not a promise that every subclass accepts every report regardless of test date. Use the page for the application you will submit.

Ask the recipient a precise question: whether it accepts IELTS Academic or General Training One Skill Retake from your provider, with your original date and intended retake location. Save a written reply if the website is unclear. Asking only whether it accepts “IELTS” leaves the most consequential part unanswered.

## What the new report contains, and what it cannot do

OSR gives you a new Test Report Form showing the new score for the retaken skill alongside the three unchanged scores from the original test. The original report remains valid under its applicable acceptance period. You can choose to use the original or the OSR report, subject to the recipient accepting that report type.

This protects your choice if the new skill result is lower. It is not a guarantee that the retake score rises, and it is not a promise that the overall band changes. A higher component score can leave the rounded overall band unchanged. Conversely, the needed improvement might be a component floor even when the overall score was already sufficient.

Suppose a recipient requires 7.0 overall with no component below 6.5, and your profile is Listening 7.5, Reading 7.0, Writing 6.0 and Speaking 7.0\. The overall is already 7.0 after rounding, but Writing fails the component condition. If Writing becomes 6.5, the OSR report addresses that specific shortfall, provided it is accepted. These are illustrative scores, not a promise of improvement.

Do not attempt to combine a preferred Speaking result from one full test with a preferred Writing result from another. The OSR report itself contains the permitted combination linked to one original test. The report is identified as an OSR result, and its acceptance must be checked as such. Retaking a component does not convert Academic into General Training or turn an ordinary test into UKVI.

## Retake one skill, resit the full test or seek a review?

* One skill below a required floor, accepted OSR and eligibility remaining: compare an OSR booking with focused preparation.
* Two or more skills below mandatory floors: a single OSR cannot repair the complete profile; consider a full resit.
* Express Entry application: plan an accepted full General Training test or another approved test, because OSR is rejected.
* Wrong test type or security product: book the correct product; OSR cannot change Academic into General Training or ordinary IELTS into UKVI.
* Concern that the original assessment did not reflect your performance: examine EOR rules and provider sequencing, rather than treating it as another attempt.
* Recipient deadline too close for the new report: confirm whether later evidence is permitted before spending on a retake.

Use this as a decision order. First establish what evidence can satisfy the application. Next find which scores fail the condition. Then inspect eligibility, available dates and cost. Price should come after those questions because a lower charge cannot compensate for an unusable result.

A focused retake can be sensible when the other three skills are safely above the required floors. A full resit may be more useful when the profile is unstable or several conditions fail. Avoid assuming that an isolated bad day must be repaired through OSR: the correct choice depends on the recipient and your demonstrated practice performance.

## Prepare for the precise score condition

Write the required profile as four component floors plus any overall minimum. Then compare practice work with the weakest condition. For Listening and Reading, inspect whether lost marks come from comprehension, answer limits, spelling or missed questions. For Writing and Speaking, use feedback against the public assessment criteria rather than counting practice tasks completed.

topin’s [IELTS band calculator](/ielts/band-score-calculator) can help you explore how a hypothetical replacement score affects the rounded overall band. Treat those scenarios as planning arithmetic. They cannot predict your retake result, change a component floor or establish that the recipient accepts OSR.

Before the session, check which identification document your provider wants and that it will still be valid on the day; if you have changed passports since the original test, ask before you book. Afterwards, keep both reports and send whichever one your recipient accepts.

## FAQs

How much is IELTS One Skill Retake in India in 2026?

IDP India currently lists INR 12,650\. Its ordinary full IELTS fee is INR 19,000, so OSR is not half the full fee.

Do I have 60 days from receiving IELTS results?

No. You must complete the retake within 60 days of the original full test day, not the result-release date.

Can I retake two IELTS skills?

Not through one OSR linked to the same full test. The rule allows one skill once per original test; multiple shortfalls may require a full resit.

Does Canada accept IELTS One Skill Retake?

Canada’s Express Entry page explicitly rejects OSR. Other Canadian purposes and universities need separate checks; UBC undergraduate admission also rejects it.

Does Australia accept OSR for the 485 visa?

Current Home Affairs Temporary Graduate stream pages explicitly accept it. The retake must be completed before lodgement, and score and evidence-age conditions still apply.

Can I keep my old IELTS score if OSR is worse?

Yes. You can choose the original report instead of the OSR report, subject to the recipient’s acceptance and result-age requirements.

Does One Skill Retake extend IELTS validity?

No. British Council guidance ties the two-year period to the original full test date.

Can Writing on Paper candidates retake Writing on computer?

No. The Writing retake must use the same mode as the original Writing component.
