## Find the level before choosing your target

__Oxford graduate IELTS thresholds; checked 5 October 2026__
| Level | Overall | Every component |
| -------- | ------- | --------------- |
| Standard | 7.0 | 6.5 |
| Higher | 7.5 | 7.0 |

Use the [Oxford graduate language policy](https://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/graduate/application-guide/qualifications-experience-languages-funding/english-language-proficiency) together with your chosen course page. The central policy supplies the score table; the course supplies the applicable level. Save both pages with the intake and checked date. A search result saying “Oxford IELTS 7” leaves the most consequential part of the requirement unresolved.

Make a requirements record with six fields: course title, intake, standard or higher level, overall floor, component floor and evidence deadline. Add a seventh field for the accepted report type. This is a useful working document rather than an Oxford application form. It prevents you from spending several weeks preparing for the standard profile when your intended course requires higher English.

Do the component comparison first. If your course requires higher English and Writing is 6.5, improving Listening from 8 to 8.5 does not repair that shortfall. Likewise, four scores of 7 satisfy the higher component floor but produce overall 7, below the higher overall floor. Both conditions must hold on the same accepted result.

The labels describe language conditions, not the difficulty or prestige of the degree. Do not infer the level from “MSc”, “MPhil” or “DPhil”. If you shortlist several courses, record each requirement separately. Your preparation target can then cover all of them, but only after you know which rules actually apply.

## Work through the report rather than the headline band

__Invented single-test profiles for checking both conditions__
| Profile | L/R/W/S | Overall | Numerical result |
| ------- | ----------- | ------- | ----------------------------- |
| A | 7/7/6.5/6.5 | 7.0 | Standard only |
| B | 8/8/6.5/7 | 7.5 | Higher Writing shortfall |
| C | 7/7/7/7 | 7.0 | Higher overall shortfall |
| D | 8/7.5/7/7 | 7.5 | Higher floors and overall met |

The profiles in the table are invented planning examples. L/R/W/S means Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The overall figures use ordinary IELTS rounding, which you can explore with the [band calculator](/ielts/band-score-calculator). The arithmetic does not decide whether Oxford accepts the product or whether the academic application succeeds.

For the first profile, the four component total is 27.0\. Dividing by four gives 6.75, reported as overall 7.0\. Every component is at least 6.5, so the standard numerical condition is met. The same result fails the higher condition because both the overall and two components are too low.

The second profile has an impressive overall 7.5, yet Writing fails higher English. This is the practical reason to write the four component floors beside the report. A large receptive-skills advantage can make the overall look finished while the compulsory productive-skill condition remains unresolved.

For the third profile, all four components clear 7, but the average remains exactly 7.0\. The fourth profile shows one possible combination meeting both higher conditions. You do not need that precise combination: any accepted single-test profile meeting both rules can satisfy the numerical requirement.

When evaluating practice, retain each complete profile. Do not construct a best-of collection from different mock dates and call it readiness. Use repeated fresh attempts to see whether your lower skills and overall requirement hold together in a single sitting.

## Choose a report Oxford can use

Oxford's graduate policy accepts ordinary Academic and Academic for UKVI, and requires the qualifying scores from one test. It excludes General Training, IELTS Online and One Skill Retake. Check those restrictions before paying for a fallback. A retake service being available at your centre does not make its resulting report acceptable to this recipient.

Suppose you already have higher-level Listening, Reading and Speaking, but Writing is 6.5\. An OSR booking could give you a new Writing score, yet it would not satisfy this Oxford rule. The useful comparison is an accepted full resit, a permitted alternative test, or a university-approved language route. Keep the acceptance decision ahead of cost and convenience.

Ordinary Academic and UKVI Academic are not interchangeable for every later purpose. If sponsorship instructions require a particular product, follow them. The [Academic versus General Training guide](/articles/ielts-academic-vs-general) explains the naming layers. For Oxford admission itself, the accepted-product statement above is the relevant starting point.

Check the confirmation before the test: candidate name, date, centre, Academic designation and any UKVI designation required for your circumstances. If an error appears, ask the provider to correct it through its official process. Discovering the wrong version after testing is a problem that higher component scores cannot solve.

## Separate applying from meeting the language condition

Oxford permits graduate applications without qualifying language scores; a successful academic application can receive a language condition with a specified deadline. Its policy ties acceptable test age to the course start, with results less than two years old. Do not assume that being recent when you apply is the complete date test.

Build a calendar from the offer-condition deadline backwards. Reserve a report-release interval, recipient processing time and a possible second full attempt. Those latter allowances should come from actual booking availability and admissions instructions; they are not fixed Oxford service promises. Put the course-start date on the same calendar so the result-age check stays visible.

Consider an invented schedule: an English condition is due on 15 July, and your preferred first test is 20 June. Ask when the report will be available, how it will be uploaded and when another full sitting could realistically happen. If the fallback date plus report processing passes 15 July, the first booking has no usable fallback even though it precedes the deadline.

Choose an earlier attempt when uncertainty is high. If you need access arrangements, start that conversation early as well. The purpose of spare time is to accommodate a real administrative or preparation problem, rather than to encourage repeated testing without review. A resit should follow work on the reason the previous profile missed the condition.

## Submit the official report and keep a clear record

Oxford's instructions allow entry of the TRF number, test date and scores, with a certificate upload through the application or Graduate Applicant Self Service. Follow the fields shown in your own account. Keep the original report intact and use the official document, rather than an edited image summarising the parts you want admissions to notice.

Create a small submission record: report filename, TRF number, test date, upload date and portal status. After uploading, reopen the file to check readability and confirm that the four components are visible. A successful upload and confirmation that a condition is satisfied are separate events; retain the final status or reply too.

For a waiver, read the current criteria and supply evidence relevant to them. A degree taught in English is a fact about your education; it is not by itself proof that Oxford has granted a waiver. Keep a pending request labelled pending in your calendar. Continue the preparation steps that remain useful until the department's decision is known.

If you narrowly miss, Oxford's online pre-sessional course can meet the condition: it needs an IELTS Academic result from the past two years of at least 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each component for standard-level courses, or 7.0 overall with 6.5 in each for higher-level courses. Contact the department first, because your condition deadline may need extending. Do not turn a below-threshold report into an assumed direct-entry pass. Ask the department how the course fits your offer before committing to it.

## Prepare for the weakest mandatory condition

Start with a full profile from [topin's free IELTS Academic mock](/ielts/practice-test), marked on the official scale, and add official material as a benchmark. A preparation score is an estimate, so use it to decide what to practise rather than to claim that the admissions condition is already satisfied.

If Writing is the limiting skill, retain both responses and identify whether missing task content, weak development or repeated language errors caused the problem. Practise that feature on new prompts, then return to a complete session. Completing a polished essay after several revisions does not show that you can meet the required performance under the test clock.

If all component floors are secure but overall remains short, inspect the plausible routes to the additional total. A half-band change in one skill adds 0.125 to the unrounded average. Work through the rounding boundary before choosing a focus. The most useful skill to improve is one where your practice reveals a specific, repairable weakness.

Compare this plan with the [Cambridge postgraduate requirements](/articles/ielts-cambridge-postgraduate-requirements) if both universities are on your list. Keep their submission and retake rules separate. Finish with one question for each proposed action: will it produce evidence this course can accept, at the required profile, by the required date?
