## Check the original passport before anything else

The [IDP India FAQ](https://ieltsidpindia.com/information/faq) states that test takers must bring only an original, valid passport, meaning unexpired with every detail clearly legible, and describes a “no passport, no test” policy. Global IELTS material can mention passports or national identity cards depending on registration and location; do not use that generic wording to substitute Aadhaar or a driving licence for the Indian requirement.

Inspect the passport physically a week before the appointment. Confirm that it is in your possession, unexpired and readable. Compare its details with your registration. A scan saved on your phone helps you check information, but it does not replace the original at admission. Do the possession check before planning any other item in your bag.

If your passport is with an embassy, travel agent or renewal office, resolve the conflict early. Ask when the original will be returned and contact IDP about your booking if it will not be available. Do not plan to persuade staff at the entrance with an application receipt. The centre's stated evidence rule is the starting point.

Before test day, IDP India asks you to review the Data Verification Sheet (DVS) in your candidate login, correct any errors and upload a passport copy; it says corrections are processed within two working days. If you have already submitted the DVS or missed its deadline, IDP India directs you to email ielts.india@idp.com. Keep the written reply. Do not assume the centre will accept a new document automatically because the name is the same. The issue is matching the registered identity through the authorised procedure.

## Verify each test location and each reporting time

__Suggested appointment worksheet; follow centre confirmations__
| Session | Fields to verify |
| ------------------------------ | ---------------------------------------------------- |
| Listening, Reading and Writing | Date; venue; reporting time; delivery mode |
| Speaking | Date; venue; reporting time; interview instructions |
| Identity update | Provider approval if the registered passport changed |

IDP India's FAQ describes two different patterns. For IELTS on Computer, Speaking is scheduled on the same day as Listening, Reading and Writing, you cannot choose the slot, and the time appears in your candidate login a few days before the test. For paper-based IELTS, you choose a Speaking slot from 5 days to 1 day before the written test, until 8 days before it; if you do not, IDP assigns one. Speaking is face to face at the centre with a certified examiner.

Make a simple appointment sheet with main test and Speaking as distinct rows, and record the date, reporting time and venue for each from the latest confirmation. On paper bookings, IDP India says a Speaking change should be requested by email 2–3 days before the test; on computer bookings it does not offer a Speaking-only change, only a transfer of the whole test for valid reasons. Delete obsolete calendar reminders when a time changes.

Check the route to the actual venue entrance, not just a building name on a map. A large office complex can have different gates or security desks. Decide how you will travel and choose a personal allowance for delays. That allowance is your planning choice; the official reporting time remains the one in the centre confirmation.

If Speaking falls on another day, repeat the passport and route checks for that session. Do not treat completing Listening, Reading and Writing as permission to ignore the later appointment. Likewise, if Speaking comes first, keep the main-test instructions ready. Your objective is to complete every booked component under the correct arrangements.

## Pack the essentials and follow local restrictions

Pack the passport first, then keep the booking details and centre contact accessible for travel. Follow your centre's instructions about what can enter the room, where belongings are stored and whether a particular bottle is allowed. Older paper-test videos and generic stationery lists may describe a different delivery arrangement.

The [IDP what-to-bring page](https://ielts.idp.com/about/test-day/what-to-bring) emphasises the identification used at registration and local instructions. Use it as general context; use India-specific passport guidance for the local document choice. If the sources appear inconsistent, ask the centre about your exact booking rather than selecting the more convenient sentence.

A phone can help you reach the venue and access confirmations, but check the required storage procedure before the test. Do not assume you can keep it with you as a clock or use it during a break. Prepare whatever travel details you need in a form you can access before handing belongings over.

Keep food, medication or access-related needs aligned with approved arrangements and the provider's rules. If you need permission or an adjustment, resolve it before the appointment. Arriving with an unconfirmed arrangement introduces an administrative uncertainty at the point when it is hardest to resolve. Contact the centre with the specific need and follow the response.

## Raise identity and equipment problems before answering

Follow staff instructions for registration and identity checks. If an identifying detail does not match, show the booking information and any authorised correction. Keep the explanation factual. A centre employee can tell you the official next step; another candidate's experience cannot grant permission for a different identity document.

For computer delivery, inspect the display and use the audio check provided. If headphones, volume, keyboard or mouse do not work, raise your hand and tell staff immediately. Distinguish “I do not understand the task” from “the equipment is failing”. Report the exact issue so the invigilator can respond through the centre's procedure.

Learn the official controls beforehand through the [computer-interface guide](/articles/ielts-computer-test-interface) and partner familiarisation material. Test day is a poor moment to discover that you do not know how to move between question numbers or locate an answer field. Familiarity should free attention for the actual language task.

If you booked handwritten Writing within computer IELTS, confirm that the session matches the selected mode and follow instructions for the supplied answer materials. The [Writing-mode comparison](/articles/ielts-writing-paper-vs-computer) explains this hybrid arrangement. Do not infer the whole test is paper-based because one component is handwritten.

## Use a routine that reduces avoidable decisions

__Suggested evening-before checks, not extra official rules__
| Item | Pass condition |
| --------------------- | ------------------------------------------------- |
| Passport | Original, valid, readable and packed |
| Appointments | Both sessions checked against latest confirmation |
| Travel | Correct entrance and personal delay allowance |
| Belongings | Centre storage and permitted-item rules read |
| Equipment familiarity | Navigation and answer entry already rehearsed |

The evening before, check the appointment sheet against the latest provider message. Put the original passport with the items you will actually carry, set an alarm and confirm travel. Avoid a plan where a relative must locate the passport while you are already leaving. The useful routine has visible evidence for each completed action.

Use a short mechanics rehearsal rather than another exhausting full attempt. For example, spend ten minutes revisiting navigation and typing several answers accurately, then review the first steps you will take at the centre. These are suggested preparation activities, not official check-in requirements or a claim about the ideal amount of last-night study.

An earlier [free IELTS Academic mock on topin](/ielts/practice-test), marked on the official scale, can support timed rehearsal. Keep full practice away from the last-minute document check if it distracts you from logistics. For General Training, add official version-specific Reading and letter materials; an Academic mock does not replace those differences.

Decide in advance what you will do after a difficult item: enter the best permitted answer, keep your place and continue. For a technical problem, tell staff. Those are different responses. Confusing uncertainty about an answer with equipment failure can waste time, while silently enduring a real failure prevents timely assistance.

## Handle changes through the provider, then record the outcome

If you are ill, unable to travel or missing the required passport, contact the provider promptly and check the cancellation or transfer policy for your product. This article does not invent a universal refund percentage or promise that every disruption qualifies. Use the terms applying to the booked service and any required supporting evidence.

If a test-day incident occurs, note the time, section and problem as soon as you can appropriately do so. Raise it through staff and the official complaint route. Be specific about the event. A remark of the original assessment and a complaint about administration are different processes; decide which one addresses your concern.

After completing the sessions, save the test date and report-access instructions. Use the [results and TRF guide](/articles/ielts-results-trf-university-delivery) to plan the next stage. Do not assume the university receives scores automatically because you wrote its name somewhere during registration. Check the recipient's requested evidence route.

Review the logistics once after the appointment. If travel, equipment familiarity or document handling created avoidable pressure, change that step before a future test. Keep the review short and practical. Your next attempt, if needed, should have a complete passport and appointment plan as well as a focused language-preparation plan.

## FAQs

Can I use Aadhaar instead of my passport for IELTS in India?

IDP India’s current FAQ requires the original valid passport. Do not substitute another document based on generic international guidance.

Is a passport photocopy enough?

No under the current IDP India test-day guidance. Bring the original valid passport.

What if my passport changed after booking?

Contact the provider before test day and follow its authorised identity-update instructions. Keep the confirmation.

Will Speaking be at the same venue?

Check your separate appointment confirmation. Do not assume the date, reporting time or venue matches the other components.

What should I do if the headphones fail?

Raise the issue with staff immediately and follow the centre’s procedure, preferably during the equipment check before answering.
