## Use undergraduate policies for undergraduate applications

__Undergraduate IELTS comparison; checked 5 October 2026__
| Recipient | IELTS minimum | OSR | Report instruction |
| --------- | ------------------------------ | -------- | --------------------------------------------------------- |
| UBC | Academic 6.5 overall; 6.0 each | Excluded | Follow Applicant Service Centre and evidence instructions |
| Toronto | Academic 6.5 overall; 6.0 each | Excluded | Test-centre electronic delivery required |

The [UBC English language admission standard](https://you.ubc.ca/applying-ubc/requirements/english-language-competency/) and [Toronto English requirements](https://future.utoronto.ca/english-language-requirements) are the primary sources for this comparison, checked on 5 October 2026\. These are undergraduate admission pages. Do not apply their minimums automatically to a graduate programme, professional regulator or immigration application.

Start by determining whether you need test evidence at all. Both institutions publish alternative ways of demonstrating English and processes for considering exemptions or waivers. Read the route matching your actual education. A school being English-medium does not itself answer every requirement about location, duration, curriculum or documents.

For applicants studying in India, UBC publishes a specific curriculum route: a CBSE- or CISCE-affiliated school, the SSC or ISC curriculum, and at least 75% in senior English (interim Class XII grades are used while you are still at school; UBC can exclude schools). Toronto's exemption list is based on years of study in English-dominant countries, so check it separately. If no route clearly applies, prepare an accepted test while seeking clarification. Treat an exemption request as a request, not as a granted exemption, until the university confirms its decision.

The comparison focuses on IELTS because a shared accepted report may reduce administrative duplication. It does not rank the universities or say that meeting the language minimum guarantees admission. Academic prerequisites, programme selection and application deadlines remain separate. Keep English evidence as one row in a larger application checklist.

## The same minimum can fail in several different ways

__Invented report checks against the published numerical floor__
| Profile | L/R/W/S | Overall | Result |
| ---------------------- | ----------- | ------- | --------------------- |
| Low Writing | 7.5/7/5.5/6 | 6.5 | Writing fails |
| Even sixes | 6/6/6/6 | 6.0 | Overall fails |
| Sufficient combination | 7/6.5/6/6 | 6.5 | Numerical minimum met |

Both minimums require the overall and every component floor. A report of Listening 7.5, Reading 7.0, Writing 5.5 and Speaking 6.0 gives overall 6.5 after rounding, yet fails the stated Writing condition. Raising the overall elsewhere will not repair it. Use the [band calculator](/ielts/band-score-calculator) for arithmetic and the university page for acceptance.

Four components of 6.0 produce overall 6.0, so that profile misses the overall despite satisfying all four component floors. A profile of 7.0, 6.5, 6.0 and 6.0 averages 6.375, reported as 6.5, and meets the published numerical minimum. These are invented examples intended to show the two-part comparison.

Avoid assembling the best components from several dates. UBC explicitly requires minimum components in one sitting, and Toronto's IELTS instructions require the listed scores on a single date. Keep each official report whole. If you need a resit, your preparation has to preserve the stronger skills as well as address the failed one.

Make a pass-check table with separate columns for test type, overall, Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking, age and reporting. Mark a row complete only when all applicable conditions are met. This helps distinguish a numerical shortfall from a document-routing problem, which requires a completely different next action.

## Retakes and remote tests need recipient-specific checks

Both pages exclude IELTS One Skill Retake. That matters if just one component misses 6.0: the availability of a retake appointment does not make its report usable for these undergraduate requirements. Read the [OSR rules](/articles/ielts-one-skill-retake) for eligibility, but use the recipient's exclusion to decide whether the service can solve this application problem.

Toronto explicitly includes IELTS Online in its Academic listing and accepts Academic for UKVI. UBC's table excludes General Training, Indicator and OSR; do not infer a specific Online policy merely from the absence of a product name. Its separate instructions discuss requests concerning unlisted online tests. Confirm any unclear product before booking.

A test-centre Academic report is a practical common starting point when you want evidence for both institutions. Check the current intake and any individual application instructions before paying. If you already have a remote report, ask UBC about that exact product rather than buying another test solely because a forum post says all online tests are rejected.

Keep immigration evidence separate. A university's Academic requirement does not turn that report into a General Training immigration result. Plan later tests when they are actually needed and recent enough for their recipients. Admission planning should not rely on an assumed universal “Canada IELTS” requirement.

## Toronto requires provider delivery; UBC has its own document route

Toronto says IELTS scores must arrive electronically from the test centre through the IELTS Results Service. It publishes the receiving account as University of Toronto - Undergraduate and Graduate Programs, with the St. George Street address. No IELTS institutional code is required. Copy the live account details carefully when arranging delivery. Toronto also says an unacceptable result will not count against you and encourages applicants to send every result as it becomes available, by the supporting-document deadline.

UBC directs applicants to their Applicant Service Centre to see which documents can be uploaded, and notes that some testing agencies can send scores electronically. Follow the instructions in your own account. Do not substitute a Toronto delivery request for the UBC evidence step or assume that a certificate uploaded at one university reaches the other.

Record a separate delivery status for each recipient: requested, sent and matched to the application. A provider confirmation that scores were sent is useful evidence, but it does not show the university matched them successfully. Check the applicant record and follow up on the precise missing step if it remains unresolved.

Toronto asks applicants to use the same name and date of birth for testing and admission so results can be matched. Compare your test registration with the application before the appointment. If a passport renewal or name correction changes details, ask the provider and university how to document it. Do not alter the official certificate yourself.

## Keep the intake and document deadline visible

UBC's page contains different test-date cutoffs for different Winter Sessions: the 2026/27 instructions refer to tests from 1 January 2024, while the test table names 1 January 2025 for 2027/28\. Read the row for your intake. Do not collapse those visible dates into one undated statement that every UBC result is simply “valid two years”.

For Toronto, use the supporting-document deadline in your applicant portal and the relevant application dates page. This comparison does not invent a single national deadline or reuse one programme's date for all applicants. A test scheduled before a document deadline may still leave too little time for the required provider delivery and university processing.

Make an invented schedule to expose the dependency: language document due 1 March, first test 1 February, possible second accepted full sitting 15 February, then report release and delivery. Replace these with real available dates and official windows. If the fallback cannot arrive in time, move the first attempt earlier or seek explicit recipient guidance.

A report suitable for this application cycle may be unsuitable for a later intake. Save the test date and current policy evidence with the report. When deferring or reapplying, repeat the date check rather than copying the previous completion status. Language scores and their permitted age are two separate pieces of evidence.

## Use one study target and two evidence checklists

For Academic preparation, start with [topin's free IELTS mock](/ielts/practice-test), marked on the official scale, then add official tasks and feedback. Record the complete profile and compare it with 6.5 overall plus 6.0 each. A mock identifies work to do; it is not an official report accepted for admission.

If Writing is below its floor, determine whether the main issue is task content, organisation or recurring language errors. Keep both tasks in the diagnostic. A strong Task 2 alongside an incomplete Task 1 does not demonstrate a stable Writing performance. Repair the observed issue and repeat new material under the session limit.

If Reading or Listening is the shortfall, inspect raw errors before choosing more practice. Did you misunderstand a sentence, overlook a qualifier, mistype the correct word or exceed the permitted answer length? Each diagnosis suggests a different exercise. Track the error category so progress means fewer repeated problems, not simply more tests completed.

Finish with two recipient checklists covering product, dates and reporting. The [IELTS results and TRF guide](/articles/ielts-results-trf-university-delivery) can help organise the delivery record. A shared score target makes preparation simpler, but the application is complete only when each university has the evidence in the form it requires.
