## Read the five levels as five complete conditions

__UCL graduate IELTS thresholds; checked 5 October 2026__
| Level | Overall | Each component |
| ------- | ------- | -------------- |
| Level 1 | 6.5 | 6.0 |
| Level 2 | 7.0 | 6.5 |
| Level 3 | 7.0 | 7.0 |
| Level 4 | 7.5 | 7.0 |
| Level 5 | 8.0 | 8.0 |

Use the [UCL graduate English policy](https://www.ucl.ac.uk/prospective-students/graduate/english-language-requirements) for the current table and your programme page for the assigned level. The table is not a menu from which applicants choose the most convenient score. It describes the language condition attached to the course you intend to study.

The largest trap is the difference between Levels 2 and 3\. Both ask for overall 7.0, but Level 3 raises every component floor from 6.5 to 7.0\. Likewise, Level 4 retains the 7.0 component floor while raising overall to 7.5\. Treat each row as an overall condition plus four component conditions, not as a single headline number.

UCL's older labels appear in existing advice: standard corresponds to Level 1, good to Level 2 and advanced to Level 4 in the central guidance. Use the current numbered level to prevent ambiguity. If an old brochure says “good English”, find the live course requirement before assuming that its label still governs the intake you want.

Create a shortlist sheet with programme, intake, level, overall, each component, evidence deadline and policy URL. If a programme changes on your shortlist, update the entire row. Two degrees at the same institution can make different language demands, so a university name is not a sufficient study target.

## Check the floor before checking the rounded overall

__Original complete-profile comparisons__
| Profile | L/R/W/S | Overall | Highest numerical level met |
| ------- | ------------- | ------- | --------------------------- |
| A | 7.5/7/6.5/6.5 | 7.0 | Level 2 |
| B | 7/7/7/7 | 7.0 | Level 3 |
| C | 8/7.5/7/7 | 7.5 | Level 4 |
| D | 8.5/8/8/7.5 | 8.0 | Level 4 |

The table uses invented score profiles. L/R/W/S labels the four skills. Use the [IELTS calculator](/ielts/band-score-calculator) if you want to inspect additional combinations. It explains the overall calculation; it does not certify UCL acceptance or replace the programme's required level.

Profile A totals 27.5 and averages 6.875, reported as 7.0\. It meets Level 2's component floors, but fails Level 3 because Writing is 6.5\. This is a useful counterexample to the assumption that two levels sharing the same overall band are interchangeable. A small change in a mandatory component can matter more than a larger change elsewhere.

Profile B meets the four Level 3 floors but misses Level 4's overall requirement. Profile C supplies sufficient total and component performance for Level 4\. Profile D has overall 8.0 but misses Level 5 because Speaking is 7.5\. The overall can conceal a remaining floor at any level, including the highest.

Use these comparisons to choose preparation priorities. If your Writing is the only failed floor, start there. If all floors are met but the overall is low, inspect where you have a specific opportunity to increase the component total. The same “improve half a band” advice means different work in those two situations.

## Confirm the accepted test and retake policy

UCL's graduate page lists IELTS Academic, permits Academic Online and excludes One Skill Retake. If you miss a component, an available OSR appointment is therefore not automatically a usable correction for UCL. Check the report policy before comparing the price of retesting; the least expensive unusable report still leaves the condition unsatisfied.

An accepted full resit produces a complete new profile. Rehearse all four skills even if your focused improvement work is in Writing or Speaking. Keeping the stronger skills active matters because the qualifying report must show the whole required combination. A previous Listening band is not a reserve score you can silently attach to a later full attempt.

If you want one report for several recipients, compare their rules before booking a remote test. The [Oxford graduate requirements](/articles/ielts-oxford-graduate-requirements) illustrate a different Online policy. A mode accepted by one university can be excluded by another. Choose a shared acceptable product when possible, or keep the separate evidence needs explicit.

The university's admission policy is also separate from the security product needed for a particular immigration evidence route. Read your offer and sponsorship instructions together. Do not select General Training because it appears on an unrelated visa list when the programme's language requirement specifies Academic.

## Apply the enrolment-date rule, not a generic expiry guess

UCL's graduate guidance asks for test evidence no more than two years before proposed enrolment. Its published September 2026 example uses tests sat on or after 1 September 2024\. Preserve that example as the stated intake-specific evidence, rather than inventing a different national expiry rule.

For another intake, identify the enrolment date and the current instructions covering it. If your report lies close to the boundary, ask UCL whether it remains acceptable for that specific start. Record the response next to the test date. A strong score can still need replacement when the date condition is not met.

Separate application submission from fulfilling the English condition. UCL says an application can still be considered without language evidence, with the requirement imposed in an offer. That does not mean you should postpone the test until the last available week. Work backwards from the individual deadline and real appointments, especially if a full resit may be necessary.

Use a practical planning allowance rather than a fastest-result assumption. For example, reserve a first attempt several weeks before the condition deadline, a period for review and another available full sitting. These are your contingency choices, not extra time granted by UCL. Confirm any deadline extension with admissions instead of assuming that booking proves compliance.

## Send the official document through the applicant process

UCL asks for the official score document through the application or Applicant Portal and excludes emailed results, unofficial reports and screenshots. Download the official certificate and check that its identifying details, test date, components and overall score are readable. An image of the provider's score display may show the right numbers but still be the wrong evidence.

Keep a submission record with your applicant identifier, programme, document filename, report number and upload date. Inspect the portal confirmation and reopen the uploaded file if possible. If several applications exist, check which one you attached the report to. Administrative accuracy is part of completing the condition, not an optional task after preparation.

Do not keep sending new scores while an application is under consideration without reading UCL's stated restrictions. Its central page distinguishes initial evidence from later updates after an offer. Follow the stage-specific process shown in your account. If the correct route is unclear, ask about your current application stage and the document you have.

An education-based exemption has separate conditions, including the qualification, location and recency of study. An English-medium certificate from any country is not a universal substitute. Supply the relevant facts and let admissions decide, while keeping a possible test plan available until the evidence condition is settled.

## Allocate practice to the unmet UCL condition

Begin with [topin's free IELTS Academic mock](/ielts/practice-test), marked on the official scale, and record the complete profile. Use official material and descriptor-based feedback alongside it. The useful output is a list of unmet conditions and recurrent errors, rather than a single optimistic estimate copied into an application spreadsheet.

For Level 3 or above, pay close attention to the lower productive skill. Review whether both Writing tasks fulfil their prompts, whether ideas are developed and whether sentence errors persist across topics. Set one repair target per practice session. For example, practise making an accurate overview before returning to full Task 1 responses, instead of drafting five reports with the same omission.

If Listening or Reading is below a floor, distinguish comprehension errors from preventable entry errors. Review the exact evidence for each answer, then inspect spelling and the instruction limit. More general reading will not directly repair a repeated overlength-answer habit. A narrowly chosen exercise followed by fresh timed material gives you a clearer measure of change.

Repeat a complete session before deciding that the profile is stable. If another mandatory floor drops during the resit rehearsal, adjust the plan rather than ignoring it. Your readiness decision should cover product, all five score conditions, result age and submission timing. A language condition is finished when UCL accepts the evidence for the course, not when practice first looks promising.
