## How to read a visa band requirement correctly

A visa English requirement can be an overall score, a floor for every skill, or a benchmark level converted separately for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. These are different tests of your report. A high Listening result cannot compensate for Writing below a mandatory component floor, even when the rounded overall band looks strong.

The table uses L, R, W and S for the four skills in that order. “Overall only” means the listed government threshold is stated as an overall IELTS score; it does not remove any separate university, sponsor or professional-registration requirement. “No universal band” means the general source does not impose one IELTS figure for every applicant in that category.

All figures were checked on 4 October 2026\. Some applicants are exempt or can use other evidence, and meeting the English rule is only one condition of the visa.

Keep the test version visible throughout. Canada Express Entry requires General Training, while Australia lists [Academic and General Training](/articles/ielts-academic-vs-general) for the routes below. In the UK, needing a Secure English Language Test means the approved UKVI product and location matter. A score can be numerically sufficient while the report itself is the wrong evidence.

| Canada — PGWP, college/non-university categories | Usually CLB 5 in every ability | 5.0 / 4.0 / 5.0 / 5.0 | General Training; check programme category and exceptions. |

The UK numerical mapping is the IELTS for UKVI threshold for the stated CEFR level, not a universal university admission band. The Australian rows follow the currently published tables for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025\. Canadian figures use IRCC’s General Training-to-CLB conversion, with the order changed here to L/R/W/S for consistent comparison.

A course, registration body or skills assessor may demand a stronger profile. If a programme asks for 7.0 overall and 6.5 in every component, meeting a visa row at 5.5 each does not satisfy that course. Write both requirements beside each other and prepare for the stricter applicable condition in each skill.

## UK: the B2 rule and the 2026 Skilled Worker change

For the Student route, GOV.UK distinguishes degree-level or higher study at B2 from below-degree study at B1\. A Higher Education Provider can assess degree-level English itself, so it may accept evidence other than an approved SELT. Read the sponsor’s instructions and how it will record English on your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies.

If a SELT is required, ordinary IELTS Academic is not automatically interchangeable with IELTS for UKVI. Use the approved product and centre. IELTS’s UKVI guidance maps B1 to at least 4.0 in all four skills and B2 to at least 5.5 in all four skills. An overall 5.5 with Writing 5.0 does not meet the B2 IELTS SELT profile.

Skilled Worker guidance changed for new applicants from 8 January 2026\. The normal current requirement is B2 in reading, writing, speaking and understanding English. Applicants extending or updating a qualifying Skilled Worker permission held before that date may remain under B1 provisions and need not prove English again, as the current route page explains.

So older articles saying a UK work visa needs “IELTS 4” are out of date for new applicants. And a visa floor is not a licence: professional regulators often want IELTS Academic with higher scores, so check them separately.

## Australia: overall Student scores and each-skill migration categories

Home Affairs’ Student 500 table lists Academic and General Training at the same overall thresholds. The standard figure is 6.0\. The 5.5 and 5.0 figures are conditional on specified English-course or pathway packages. They are not a general permission to apply with a lower band because you plan to improve English after arriving.

For a package including at least ten weeks of ELICOS, or the specified foundation/pathway arrangements, check the exact qualifying course conditions. The twenty-week ELICOS row uses 5.0 overall. The university or college can still impose its own Academic and component requirements, so check your offer conditions as well as the visa table.

The 7 August 2025 overhaul changed the list of approved tests and many PTE and TOEFL scores, but these IELTS Student figures were the same before it. Pages claiming IELTS requirements “went up” in August 2025 are mixing tests up.

Temporary Graduate 485 has a different usual profile: 6.5 overall with 5.5 in each component, normally from a test within the twelve months immediately before application. The current stream pages accept OSR completed before lodgement. Passport-specific exceptions are published, so check the stream page if those circumstances apply.

For relevant skilled routes, competent, proficient and superior English mean at least 6, 7 and 8 respectively in every skill. The overall band cannot replace these four floors. Home Affairs’ general category pages also refer readers to the particular subclass for timing and eligibility. Choose your target from that application, then check any occupation-specific assessment.

## Canada: CLB is not the same number as an IELTS band

__General Training to CLB — IRCC conversion checked 4 October 2026__
| CLB level | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking |
| -------------- | --------- | ------- | ------- | -------- |
| CLB 4 | 4.5 | 3.5 | 4.0 | 4.0 |
| CLB 5 | 5.0 | 4.0 | 5.0 | 5.0 |
| CLB 6 | 5.5 | 5.0 | 5.5 | 5.5 |
| CLB 7 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 |
| CLB 8 | 7.5 | 6.5 | 6.5 | 6.5 |
| CLB 9 | 8.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 |
| CLB 10 minimum | 8.5 | 8.0 | 7.5 | 7.5 |

The uneven rows are the reason “IELTS 7 for Canada PR” is too vague. Four IELTS 7.0 components do not give CLB 9 across all abilities: [Listening](/ielts/listening) needs 8.0\. For Federal Skilled Worker eligibility, CLB 7 is the first-official-language minimum; a stronger profile may improve the applicable points, but passing the minimum does not guarantee selection.

CEC uses the occupation’s TEER group, and Federal Skilled Trades uses separate thresholds for oral and written abilities. Use the exact programme rule rather than averaging scores into one convenient number. IRCC also explicitly requires IELTS General Training and rejects OSR for Express Entry.

For study, the Student Direct Stream ended at 2 p.m. ET on 8 November 2024\. Current regular study-permit guidance should be read alongside admission and application-specific documents. The general document page does not establish a single national IELTS floor for every student. A university’s published 6.5 or 7.0 condition belongs to that institution, not automatically to IRCC.

PGWP applications introduce a later language check for relevant applicants from 1 November 2024\. Current guidance generally uses CLB 7 for university categories and CLB 5 for college/non-university categories, and specifies General Training for IELTS evidence. Check the programme category, any exception and other eligibility conditions before relying on a previous Academic admission result.

## Worked score profiles: why an overall band can mislead

__Illustrative IELTS profiles; rule comparison checked 4 October 2026__
| Profile / intended purpose | L / R / W / S | Overall band | Meets the stated English condition? |
| --------------------------------------------------- | --------------------- | ------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| UK B2 IELTS SELT floor | 6.5 / 6.0 / 5.0 / 6.0 | 6.0 | No: Writing is below 5.5, despite the higher overall. |
| Australia proficient category | 8.0 / 7.5 / 6.5 / 7.0 | 7.5 | No: Writing is below the required 7.0 in every skill. |
| Canada FSW first-language floor, correct GT product | 6.0 / 6.0 / 6.0 / 6.0 | 6.0 | Yes for the CLB 7 language floor; other FSW and selection requirements remain. |
| Canada CLB 9 target, correct GT product | 7.0 / 7.0 / 7.0 / 7.0 | 7.0 | No for CLB 9 in every ability: Listening needs 8.0. |
| Australia usual 485 threshold, timely accepted test | 7.0 / 6.5 / 5.5 / 6.5 | 6.5 | Yes for 6.5 overall and 5.5 each; other subclass conditions remain. |

These examples use IELTS’s [overall rounding method](/ielts/band-score-calculator): average the four bands, then round to the nearest whole or half band. That arithmetic explains the overall result but does not decide route acceptance. A valid comparison tests every compulsory floor first and only then the overall score.

Use your own report in the same way. Mark the lowest failing component, and distinguish “misses a required floor” from “could improve points or admission competitiveness”. Those are different goals. A retake plan should address the actual unmet condition, rather than chase a prettier overall number that leaves the application in the same position.

## Product, delivery, retakes and result age can rule out a score

At-home IELTS Online is a separate Academic service and is not currently accepted for immigration purposes according to IELTS. Home Affairs explicitly rejects fully online or remote-proctored test evidence, and a UK SELT must use the approved service and location. A [computer test at a centre](/articles/ielts-2026-changes) should not be confused with a test taken on your own computer at home.

[One Skill Retake](/articles/ielts-one-skill-retake) also varies by recipient. UKVI accepts eligible IELTS for UKVI computer retakes in selected locations. Home Affairs accepts it for eligible visas, including current 485 stream conditions. Express Entry explicitly does not. A university may have a different policy again, so acceptance at one checkpoint does not settle the next.

Result-age rules differ. Express Entry requires results under two years old when completing the profile and submitting the PR application. PGWP requires results under two years old at application. The usual 485 test-evidence window is twelve months. Australian competent/proficient/superior category pages discuss three-year evidence windows depending on the subclass. Check the actual checkpoint instead of applying IELTS’s general recommended two-year period everywhere.

If a report is expiring during your application plan, schedule the next accepted test early enough to get the result and submit correctly. OSR is not a mechanism for extending the original report’s age. Keep the report number and original test date alongside the component bands in your planning record.

## Turn the requirement into a preparation target

* Identify the exact course and visa route, including subclass or Express Entry programme.
* Verify the accepted test type, security product and delivery mode on the current official page.
* Write four component floors and any overall minimum; do not average away a failed skill.
* Check exemptions, result-age rules, report delivery and the recipient’s acceptance of OSR.
* Use practice results to identify the smallest score gap and rehearse that skill under timed conditions.
* Recheck the official requirements before booking and before submitting the application.

For a candidate already above the overall requirement, the best use of preparation time may be the single component below its floor. For someone aiming at Canadian CLB 9, Listening may need a distinctly higher IELTS band than the other skills. Those differences should shape your practice allocation instead of dividing hours equally by habit.

topin’s IELTS band calculator can check overall-band scenarios, while a [timed full-length mock](/ielts/practice-test) can reveal which skills need attention. Use the government tables to establish eligibility and the calculator for arithmetic. A practice score or conversion tool cannot confirm that your chosen product, date and report satisfy a particular application.

## FAQs

What IELTS band is required for a UK Student visa?

Degree-level study requires B2; through IELTS for UKVI that means 5.5 in each skill. Below-degree study requires B1, or 4.0 each through that test, while sponsors and courses may require more.

Do UK universities always require IELTS for UKVI?

No. A degree-level Higher Education Provider can assess English itself, but a required SELT must use the approved product and centre.

What IELTS band is required for Australia’s Student visa?

The standard test-evidence threshold is 6.0 overall. Eligible English-course or pathway packages may use 5.5 or 5.0, subject to the published conditions.

Is IELTS 7 overall enough for Australian proficient English?

No. Proficient English requires at least 7.0 in every IELTS component.

What IELTS score gives CLB 9 for Canada?

IELTS General Training Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0 and Speaking 7.0\. An overall 7.0 does not establish CLB 9 in all abilities.

Is there one IELTS score for a Canadian study permit?

The general IRCC document page does not give one universal IELTS band. Follow admission and applicable application-specific requirements; SDS closed in November 2024.

Can I use IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry?

No. IRCC explicitly rejects OSR for Express Entry and requires General Training if you use IELTS.

What changed for UK Skilled Worker English in 2026?

New applicants normally need B2 from 8 January 2026\. Qualifying extensions or updates of permission held before that date have transitional B1 provisions.
