## Check the device category before checking the battery

College Board’s [approved-device page](https://bluebook.collegeboard.org/students/prepare-your-device/approved-devices) is the controlling checklist. Supported categories include Windows laptops or tablets, Mac laptops, iPads and school-managed Chromebooks, subject to current requirements. A personal Chromebook is excluded. A machine being able to browse a website does not establish that it can run the secure testing application.

Our suggested decision is binary at the first step: does this exact device meet the current category and technical requirements? If the answer is uncertain, investigate before building a study routine around it. Record its operating system and whether it is managed by a school. Check the current specifications rather than an old screenshot of minimum requirements; versions and available-storage requirements can change.

If several devices are available, choose one you can prepare and use consistently. A newer borrowed machine is not automatically better than a familiar supported one. Consider keyboard comfort, screen size, access permissions and reliable charging. These are practical selection factors, not additional College Board eligibility criteria. Approval comes first; personal preference helps choose between devices that already pass that check.

## Find installation or management restrictions early

College Board’s [personal-device preparation instructions](https://bluebook.collegeboard.org/students/prepare-your-device/prepare-a-personal-device) recommend beginning at least 30 days before test day. If someone else must install Bluebook, you may lack administrator access. Follow the official guidance for that situation rather than assuming installation by a parent or school technician settles every later update and setting.

For a school-managed device, involve the responsible school staff early. Describe the test and the intended date, and ask who will handle installation, required settings and access problems. Do not disable school controls yourself. A device loan from your school is different from College Board’s device-lending programme: the preparation responsibilities and collection arrangements need to be clear for the route you actually use.

Our readiness note can be very short: device owner, person responsible for setup, date Bluebook was tested and any unresolved restriction. If an update needs someone else’s password, make that dependency visible. The purpose is to replace “it worked once” with a reproducible setup you can open independently on the morning of the exam. Avoid changing several settings at once when diagnosing a problem.

## Install Bluebook and use its actual readiness checks

Install Bluebook from College Board’s official route and use Test Your Device. Sign in with the account used for SAT Weekend, inspect your homepage information and practise on the intended testing machine. College Board also recommends checking that you can connect to Wi-Fi away from home or school. A network that works in your bedroom does not test the device’s behaviour on another connection.

Our recommended sequence is installation, launch, sign-in, device check and a short practice session. After each step, resolve the specific failure before moving forward. If launch fails, a high practice score on a website does not answer the technical question. If credentials fail, charging the device longer will not help. Keep preparation tasks separate so a successful check has a clear meaning.

Use a full battery and the normal keyboard or approved input arrangement you intend to bring. Observe whether the device sleeps, loses connection or becomes difficult to use during sustained practice. Do not invent a private stress test that changes security settings. Use the official readiness workflow and current technical instructions, then report unresolved issues with the device details and exact error message.

## Understand what the College Board loan request does

__Official lending conditions and our suggested follow-up__
| Stage | Published condition | Next action |
| --------------- | -------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------- |
| Before request | Try a suitable school, family or friend loan first | Confirm the device is actually available |
| Request timing | Submit at least 30 days before test day | Choose a date with adequate lead time |
| Request outcome | A request does not guarantee provision | Wait for explicit approval and instructions |
| Collection | Loaned-device candidates arrive 30 minutes early | Follow the personalised arrival instructions |
| Preparation | Read the approval and collection information | Resolve unclear arrangements before travelling |

College Board’s [device-lending page](https://satsuite.collegeboard.org/sat/device-lending) explains the request after SAT registration. Submitting the form is a request, not a reservation confirmation for a device. Keep the submission record and monitor the response. If no confirmation arrives, contact support rather than assuming the centre will have a spare. The loan programme is intended for the official SAT, not general preparation access.

Consider a student registering 24 days before a proposed sitting who has only a personal Chromebook. The device category is not permitted and the standard loan-request lead time is not met. The student should investigate a suitable private or school loan or a later date. This example does not imply that an exception will be granted; it shows why the device decision belongs before a rushed booking.

## Complete exam setup when it becomes available

College Board says SAT Weekend setup and ticket generation begin five days before test day. Connect to the internet, close and reopen Bluebook to obtain the current version, sign in and check personal and test-site information. Complete exam setup on the intended device and obtain the admission ticket. Follow any different instructions supplied for an approved College Board loan.

Our suggested final-week record contains four completed actions: information checked, setup completed, ticket obtained and sign-in rehearsed. Mark an action completed only when you have seen the outcome. “Downloaded Bluebook” is not the same as “completed exam setup”. Similarly, printing a ticket does not prove that the battery will support a session or that your physical ID meets the country-specific rule.

Use the [India ID and packing checklist](/articles/sat-test-day-india-id-checklist) if relevant to your centre. Compare the account name with the actual ID before printing. If a replacement device becomes necessary, follow Bluebook’s current instructions and make the change early enough to check it properly. Do not assume the work performed on one machine transfers automatically to another device without another setup step.

## Run a final check and handle interruptions through staff

College Board recommends a morning connection, reopening Bluebook, another device check, sign-in and checking for last-minute messages. Pack the charged device and charger together. Keep credentials available to you without relying on the app to save them. Bring the ticket and accepted physical ID; the technical preparation and admission documents are separate requirements that should both be complete.

The SAT testing rules state that if answers have not submitted because the device lacks an internet connection, you have until 11:59 p.m. local time the next day to reconnect and submit. That rule is a recovery deadline, not a reason to delay submission deliberately. Follow proctor instructions, watch for confirmation and seek assistance promptly when submission does not complete.

If the application freezes or the device stops working, tell staff immediately and follow their process. Do not independently close applications, switch machines or alter security settings during a live test. Record the time and nature of the interruption afterwards without copying test content. A precise factual account supports a later enquiry better than guessing how many score points the problem might have cost.

## Keep interface rehearsal separate from score practice

[topin’s free SAT mock](/sat/practice-test) is marked on the official scale and uses topin’s own graphing calculator. It can support timed practice, but it does not perform College Board’s device check or SAT exam setup. Use Bluebook separately to learn the official interface and confirm the approved testing machine. Neither activity should be counted as completion of the other.

Our suggested rehearsal pairs a short Bluebook orientation with one sustained session on the device. Practise ordinary navigation, calculator placement, reading and scratch work without changing your routine midway. Note interface friction separately from content errors. “Could not find the question menu quickly” needs interface practice; “could not set up the equation” needs a mathematical repair. This distinction keeps the next session useful.

If approved assistive technology or adjusted timing applies, read the [accommodations guide](/articles/sat-accommodations-international) and use the official compatibility instructions for your approval. Verify that the required arrangement works on the chosen device before test day. Finish with a simple answer to three questions: is the device permitted, has readiness been checked, and has the current appointment been set up? A yes to only one is incomplete preparation.

## FAQs

Can I take the SAT on a personal Chromebook?

No. College Board permits school-managed Chromebooks within its requirements, but not personal Chromebooks. Check the approved-device page for other options.

Can College Board lend me a laptop?

It may be able to lend a testing device for SAT Weekend when suitable borrowing alternatives are unavailable. Submit the request at least 30 days beforehand; provision is not guaranteed.

When should I download Bluebook?

Start device preparation at least 30 days before the test, following College Board’s advice. Exam setup is a later task, available starting five days before the sitting.

Does topin use the same calculator as Bluebook?

topin has its own graphing calculator. Bluebook’s embedded calculator is provided by Desmos, so rehearse the official interface as well as your timed practice.

What if my answers do not submit?

Tell staff and follow the official recovery instructions. College Board’s rules give until 11:59 p.m. local time the next day to reconnect and submit when connection prevents submission.
