## Identify which change you actually need

A date change, centre change, voluntary cancellation and provider closure are different events. Write the intended outcome first: keep the sitting but change venue, move to a later sitting, stop testing or respond to an official cancellation. That distinction determines which instructions you should follow. Avoid describing all four as “rescheduling” when checking a fee or asking support for help.

College Board’s [international fee page](https://satsuite.collegeboard.org/sat/registration/international-testing/fees) distinguishes changing a centre from changing a date. Its [cancellation instructions](https://satsuite.collegeboard.org/sat/registration/change-cancel/canceling-registration) explain cancelling in My SAT and registering again if you subsequently want the original appointment. Do not assume that cancellation preserves a seat for later recovery or automatically books the replacement date.

Our recommended first step is to inspect the current registration and the intended alternative. Check the centre, test date, deadline and whether the new date serves your application. Then determine the official action and charge. You can compare options without executing either. An emotional reaction to one difficult practice session is a weak basis for a financial transaction that may also affect an admissions deadline.

## Read the current fees and deadlines together

__College Board listed fees through June 2027, checked 5 October 2026__
| Service | Listed fee in US dollars | Condition |
| -------------------------- | ------------------------ | ---------------------------------------------------------------- |
| International registration | $68 + $43 = $111 | Before any applicable additional charge |
| Change centre | $34 | Centre change only |
| Cancel by change deadline | $34 | Check the deadline for the specific sitting |
| Late cancellation | $44 | After change deadline, by Thursday 11:59 p.m. ET before test day |
| Late registration | $38 | Additional charge within the permitted late window |

Check the deadline in the stated time zone. A date on an Indian calendar is not enough to interpret an Eastern Time cutoff. Use a trustworthy time-zone conversion for the exact date and leave a buffer; daylight-saving changes can affect the offset. This article deliberately does not supply one permanent India-to-ET conversion that would be wrong for part of the year.

Our practical cost worksheet keeps registration, cancellation, centre changes and travel in separate lines. If your original booking included another charge, use its receipt rather than assuming every payment equals the base international registration. Bank conversion and card fees can change the local-currency outcome. Calculate using US-dollar provider charges first, then record the actual local-currency debit or credit shown by your bank.

## Understand refund processing without promising bank timing

College Board’s [refund policy](https://satsuite.collegeboard.org/sat/registration/fees-refunds/refunds) says eligible cancellation returns the registration fee in the original payment form, with a cancellation charge, and refund processing begins 3–5 business days after cancellation. Beginning processing is different from the money appearing in your account. Keep the cancellation confirmation and monitor the original payment route.

Our suggested refund tracker contains original transaction date and amount, cancellation date, charge shown, expected refund from the provider confirmation and actual credit. This lets you reconcile the transaction rather than guessing from a card balance. If the credit is unclear, check both College Board’s status and the bank’s processing information. A refund missing from the statement should be investigated with the relevant receipts.

Do not extend the ordinary voluntary-cancellation calculation to every exceptional case. A centre closure, no-show or failure to meet identification rules can follow different instructions or consequences. Read the notice and policy for the event that actually occurred. The useful question is “what is refundable for this registration and circumstance?”, not “does the SAT always give refunds?” when several distinct transactions are involved.

## Compare a date move using an illustrative budget

For a simple planning illustration, take a base $111 international booking with no extra charges. Moving to another normally priced sitting after an eligible cancellation involves a new $111 registration and the relevant cancellation charge. If the ordinary charge is $34 and the whole $111 comes back, the net extra provider cost is $34\. College Board’s refund page promises the registration fee back but does not spell out the $43 international fee, so check the refund amount on your cancellation confirmation; if only $68 returned, the net extra would be $77.

Under the full-refund assumption, a $44 late-cancellation charge makes the net extra provider cost $44\. Temporary cash flow can be larger: paying for the new booking before the old refund arrives means two debits can exist at once. These calculations are examples from the listed charges, not a personalised refund quotation. Use the amounts displayed in your actual checkout and cancellation confirmation.

Add transport and accommodation separately. Suppose a hypothetical $20 travel reservation is non-refundable and the replacement trip costs another $20\. The provider change charge alone does not capture the full personal cost. Conversely, moving a date may prevent a much more expensive unusable trip. Use a complete worksheet and label assumed refunds clearly until the relevant provider has confirmed them.

## Decide whether postponement solves a real problem

Our postponement framework starts with evidence. If you cannot meet ID or device requirements, establish whether the issue can be resolved by the date. If the difficulty is preparation, inspect fresh timed results and recurring errors. If it is illness or another exceptional circumstance, consult the appropriate support guidance. Different causes need different solutions; paying for a later date does not by itself fix any of them.

[topin’s free SAT mock](/sat/practice-test), marked on the official scale, can supply readiness evidence earlier in preparation. Use the [error-log method](/articles/sat-error-log-score-plateau) to determine whether an extra month has a specific purpose. A plan such as repairing reverse percentages and practising complete Math modules can be evaluated. “Study more until I feel confident” gives no clear reason that the later sitting will work better.

Compare the new date with application requirements before treating more study time as beneficial. Use the [score-sending deadline guide](/articles/sat-score-sending-deadlines) to include release and reporting. If the later sitting is unusable for your intended application, postponement changes the application plan as well as the exam plan. Contact the university when the cutoff is unclear rather than assuming a later report will be accepted.

## Make the change carefully and confirm both registrations

College Board’s cancellation workflow uses the registration in My SAT and its cancellation menu. Follow the current account instructions and read the final confirmation before executing. If you need a replacement, verify that its appointment is actually confirmed. A centre appearing in a search is not proof that your registration at that centre has been completed.

Our transaction checklist is deliberately short: identify the old registration, review the cancellation consequence, check the replacement option, complete the intended actions and save both outcomes. Review the resulting account afterwards. Confirm the old status and the new date, centre and personal information. If you receive contradictory messages, investigate before arranging travel around a guessed final status.

For the replacement sitting, update device setup and admission preparation at the appropriate time. Use the [Bluebook setup guide](/articles/sat-bluebook-device-setup) to avoid carrying a ticket or instructions for the wrong appointment. If you have accommodation or device-lending arrangements, ask how the date move affects them. A newly paid test registration does not establish that every separate arrangement has automatically moved with it.

## Keep voluntary changes separate from provider disruption

Check the [official centre-closure page](https://satsuite.collegeboard.org/sat/test-center-closings) and personal notifications when the problem is provider disruption. Follow the instructions for that registration instead of voluntarily cancelling it on the assumption that doing so is required. Save the notice and establish whether a makeup, replacement or refund process is specified. Avoid duplicate bookings until you understand what action is needed.

If a deadline has passed, ask support what options actually remain. Do not describe the refund window as open merely because the website still allows some account action. An available button and a refundable transaction are different facts. Document what support says and the reference number. This is especially useful where a family member paid and the candidate needs to explain the eventual debit or credit.

Finish the decision with a concrete outcome: keeping the date with a repaired practical issue, changing the centre, cancelling without replacement or moving to a confirmed usable date. Record the net cost and any unresolved refund. That makes the decision reviewable and prevents a later misunderstanding about whether the student is registered, merely planning to register or waiting for a provider arrangement.

## FAQs

Can I directly change my SAT test date?

College Board’s published route is cancellation and a new registration. A centre-only change is a separate service.

How much is SAT cancellation?

The listed charge is $34 by the change deadline and $44 in the stated late-cancellation window. Check the fee and deadline shown for your registration.

When does an eligible refund start processing?

College Board says processing begins 3–5 business days after cancellation. The bank-credit date can differ.

Does cancelling keep my original seat?

Do not assume it does. College Board says you must register again if you later decide to take that sitting.

Should I cancel after one low mock score?

First identify a recurring preparation problem and whether a later date remains usable for applications. One outlier alone is weak evidence for changing a booking.
