# Is There an SAT Curve? Scores and Dates 2026 | topin

On this page

## Why “the SAT curve” is the wrong idea

A classroom curve moves grades up or down depending on how the group performed. The SAT does not do that. Every question has known statistical properties from pretesting, such as how hard it is and how well it separates stronger from weaker students, and your score is the ability level that best explains your pattern of right and wrong answers.

So there is no “easy month” to pick. A strong group on the same Saturday cannot pull your score down, and a weak one cannot push it up. When people say a date had “a harsh curve”, they usually mean the questions felt hard, which on an adaptive test can simply mean you reached the harder second module.

Keep three numbers apart: the questions you got right, your scaled score (200–800 per section, 400–1600 in total) and your percentile. Only the percentile compares you with other students, and it is calculated from recent graduating classes, not from the people in your room. [Our guide to good SAT scores](/articles/good-sat-score) lists the current percentiles.

## How adaptive scoring replaces a curve

Each section has two modules. Module 1 is a mix of easy, medium and hard questions; how you do on it decides whether module 2 is harder or easier on average. Because harder questions are worth more under item response theory, two students with the same number right can get different scores.

__Digital SAT scoring facts (College Board, checked 4 October 2026)__
| Fact | Figure |
| ---------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------- |
| Total score | 400–1600, the sum of two sections |
| Section score | 200–800 in 10-point steps |
| Modules per section | 2; module 1 decides the difficulty of module 2 |
| Unscored pretest questions | 2 in each module, indistinguishable from the rest |
| Penalty for a wrong answer | None, so answer every question |
| Official raw-to-scaled table | None for the adaptive test |

College Board does not publish where routing happens or how high the easier route can go; prep teachers estimate the ceiling at roughly 600 to 650 per section. [How the digital SAT is scored](/articles/how-the-digital-sat-is-scored) covers routing, the easier-module ceiling and estimated raw-score tables in full, so this page does not repeat them.

## How many questions can you miss for 1400, 1500 or 1550?

There is no official answer, because the same number of misses can produce different scores depending on which questions they were and which module 2 you saw. Charts promising “miss five for 1500” are estimates built on one practice form. Use them as rough guides, never as a rule for test day.

The practical version of the question is: what section scores do I need, and what are my practice tests telling me? Write your target as two sections (for example 720 Reading and Writing plus 760 Math for 1480), then compare it with recent timed practice. The [SAT score calculator](/sat/score-calculator) gives an estimate from your correct answers on each route, clearly labelled as an estimate.

Accuracy on module 1 matters most. A careless slip early in a section can cost you the harder module 2, and with it the top of the scale, so check marked questions in module 1 rather than finishing early.

## Latest test: 3 October 2026, scores on 16 October

Weekend SAT scores are normally released 13 days after the test, on a Friday. The exception this year is June: the 5 June 2027 test releases on Monday 21 June. College Board says scores can occasionally take longer for individual students, so check your account rather than comparing with friends.

The same dates apply in the US and internationally. School-day SAT testing has its own release schedule, set by when the school submits answers.

## Registration deadlines for the remaining 2026–27 tests

__Remaining tests after 4 October 2026; deadlines are 11:59 pm US Eastern Time__
| Test date | Register by | Late registration and changes | Scores |

| 7 November 2026 | 23 October | 27 October | 20 November |

* 11:59 pm Eastern is the next morning in India, the UK and most of Asia, so convert the deadline to your time zone.
* A test date on the calendar does not guarantee a seat at your nearest centre; book early, especially in November.
* If you need to borrow a device from College Board, register and request it at least 30 days before the test.
* Late registration costs extra, so treat the regular deadline as your real one.

## What to do when your scores appear

* Save the report and note both section scores and the date: you need them for superscoring and self-reporting.
* Compare each section with the target you set from your colleges’ ranges, not with a friend’s score.
* Check whether your colleges superscore; if they do, a retake only needs to raise one section.
* Check the last test date each college accepts for your round before booking a retake.

October scores arrive on 16 October, a week before November registration closes, so you can decide on a retake with your result in hand. November scores arrive on 20 November, the same day December registration closes, so decide on a December backup in advance. [Our superscore and retake guide](/articles/sat-superscore-colleges-2026) shows how to set a retake target section by section.

## Choosing your next date

For students applying for autumn 2027 entry, November and December 2026 are the last weekend tests of the year. Many colleges accept December scores for regular decision, but early rounds usually need October or November, and each college sets its own last accepted date. [Our tracker of colleges that require the SAT](/articles/colleges-requiring-sat-2026) lists the policies for selective colleges.

Juniors have March, May and June 2027, which leaves room to prepare around school exams and to retake in late summer or autumn. Pick the date that gives you enough weeks to fix specific weaknesses, then take a full timed mock about two weeks before it. [topin’s first full-length SAT mock is free](/sat/practice-test), adaptive like the real test and scored on the 400–1600 scale.

## FAQs

Is the SAT curved?

No. The digital SAT is scored with item response theory, so your score reflects which questions you answered correctly, not how other students on your date performed.

Is there an easier SAT month?

No. Because there is no curve, the group you test with does not affect your score. Choose a date by your readiness and college deadlines.

Can two students get different scores with the same number correct?

Yes. Harder questions count for more, and students see different second modules, so the same count can lead to different scores.

How many questions can I miss for a 1500?

There is no official number, because it depends on which questions you miss and which module 2 you get. Practice tests and a score calculator can give an estimate.

When do October 2026 SAT scores come out?

Scores for the 3 October 2026 SAT are scheduled for 16 October 2026.

When is the next SAT after October 2026?

7 November 2026\. Regular registration closes on 23 October and scores come out on 20 November.

Do SAT scores always come out 13 days after the test?

For most weekend tests, yes, on a Friday. The 5 June 2027 test is the exception, with scores on Monday 21 June.
