# SAT for Oxford and Cambridge: AP Requirements | topin

## Choose the qualification route before choosing a score

Begin with the qualification you will present for admission, not your passport. Cambridge explicitly advises students studying a curriculum from another country to check the requirements for that curriculum. Oxford publishes accepted qualifications by country and educational route. An Indian citizen at an American-curriculum school should investigate that curriculum; a CBSE student should not assume that the US SAT/AP table automatically governs the application.

Our recommended record has university, course, qualification route, required subjects and testing evidence. Add a link to each official requirement. This separates the question “is my qualification acceptable?” from “does my SAT meet the testing part?” Both matter. A strong score on a general reasoning test cannot substitute for the advanced subject preparation specified in the course’s qualification requirements.

If you have a mixed profile, such as a national school qualification plus independent AP examinations, ask the relevant university or Cambridge College how that combination will be assessed. List the exact qualifications and intended subjects rather than asking whether “SAT is accepted in the UK”. A specific combination can be evaluated; the broad question invites an answer that may describe a different route.

## Oxford: compare the AP-only and AP-plus-SAT routes

__Oxford’s US/AP pathway checked 5 October 2026; required course subjects must be included__
| A-level equivalent course requirement | AP-only combination | AP plus SAT combination |
| ------------------------------------- | ------------------- | ------------------------------------------- |
| A\*A\*A | Four AP scores of 5 | Three AP scores of 5 plus SAT 1480 or above |
| A\*AA | Four AP scores of 5 | Three AP scores of 5 plus SAT 1470 or above |
| AAA | Four AP scores of 5 | Three AP scores of 5 plus SAT 1460 or above |

This table summarises Oxford’s [international qualifications page](https://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/courses/admissions-requirements/international-qualifications), not an offer guarantee. Check the official subject-combination notes, including restrictions affecting overlapping AP content. The course’s subject requirements determine which examinations are useful. Counting four unrelated results and a strong SAT total is not enough if the required subject preparation is absent.

Two Oxford rules change how you plan the SAT. First, Oxford does not superscore: the 1480, 1470 or 1460 total must come from a single sitting, so a 1490 built from your best Math and best Reading and Writing on different dates does not meet the condition. Second, you must enter all SAT and ACT scores, with dates, on your UCAS application, plus any tests you still intend to take before the end of senior year. Oxford also says Calculus AB and BC cannot count as two separate APs, and AP Pre-Calculus cannot meet a Mathematics requirement.

## Cambridge: the section requirement matters as well as the total

Cambridge’s [international entry page](https://www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/international-students/international-entry-requirements) describes typical US preparation as at least five AP scores of 5 in relevant subjects, a high SAT or ACT result and strong diploma performance. Its SAT minimum for most science courses (including Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Medicine and Natural Sciences) and Economics is 1500 with Math at least 750; for other courses it lists 1460 with Reading and Writing at least 730.

Use a hypothetical 1510 made of 720 Reading and Writing and 790 Math. It meets the published SAT component for the listed science/Economics grouping, but it does not meet the 730 Reading and Writing condition in the other grouping. Conversely, a high Reading and Writing result does not replace the Math minimum for science. Calculate total and relevant section together instead of relying on the total alone.

Cambridge requires disclosure of all AP, SAT and ACT tests and retakes in this route and says standardised results should be achieved within two years of matriculation. Read College-specific advice and the course page as well. The published minimum establishes part of qualification suitability; it does not predict admission or replace the rest of the selection process. Avoid importing a US Score Choice assumption without checking Cambridge’s disclosure rule.

## Indian boards need their own qualification check

Oxford accepts CBSE and CISCE (ISC) Year XII results on their own, without any SAT. For an A\*A\*A course the CBSE requirement is A1 A1 A1 A1 A2 and the ISC requirement is at least 90% overall with 95% or more in four subjects; A\*AA and AAA courses step down by one A1 or one 95% subject each. State-board and NIOS Year XII, NEET and JEE are listed as not accepted. A high SAT total does not turn an unaccepted school qualification into an accepted one.

Cambridge is stricter. Its India guidance (updated March 2026) says CBSE Class XII is accepted by some Colleges, and only for a listed set of mostly humanities and social-science courses plus Veterinary Medicine, with minimum offers of A1 A1 A1 A1 A1 in relevant subjects. Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Economics are not on that list. ISC and state-board students, and CBSE students aiming at other courses or Colleges, are strongly recommended to add further study, such as five or more APs at 5 alongside A1 grades in relevant Class XII subjects. Contact your shortlisted Colleges before relying on that combination.

Consider two students with identical SAT totals but different school and subject records. Their admissions questions can be entirely different: one needs to check an AP combination, while another needs to check national qualification suitability. The score cannot collapse these routes into one. Use the [SAT versus JEE guide](/articles/sat-vs-jee) when comparing preparation commitments, but keep the actual UK qualification requirement as the basis of the application decision.

## Check subject prerequisites and separate course tests

Open the current course page and record required and recommended subjects before booking more standardised tests. A course may require advanced Mathematics, another science or a subject-specific profile. SAT Math is a reasoning component, not proof that every advanced prerequisite has been completed. Use the qualification table to interpret how the required subjects must appear in your own educational route.

Cambridge has a separate [course admission-test page](https://www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/apply/how/admission-tests). Oxford also directs applicants to course-specific admissions requirements. Check the current test, registration process and timetable for your intended course instead of relying on an older exam name. This article does not present SAT as replacing those tests. Keep them in separate calendar rows with their own preparation and registration tasks.

Our suggested checklist uses one completed evidence item for every obligation: qualification suitability, relevant subjects, standardised score where applicable, course test and application documents. If one item is unclear, isolate it and ask the responsible admissions contact. Taking another SAT sitting while ignoring an unresolved required-subject issue can consume the remaining calendar without addressing the actual barrier to a valid application.

## Plan around qualifications, application and reporting

Build the calendar around the university’s current admissions instructions, not a generic US application schedule. Record when planned qualification results can be declared, which evidence must be achieved at application and what could form a later condition. Cambridge says academic entry requirements need not all be met when the application is submitted, but applicants should be on track to meet or exceed them by the end of school.

Our planning example separates an SAT result already achieved from AP examinations still planned. The applicant should report each accurately and check how the university treats pending results. A predicted AP result is not an achieved score, and an achieved SAT total does not prove that future AP conditions will be met. Track the status of each component so the application and preparation plan tell the same story.

Use the [SAT score-reporting guide](/articles/sat-score-sending-deadlines) to understand sending, then follow the UK recipient’s own instructions about disclosure and official verification. If a test date or result falls close to a deadline, ask whether it can be used. An automated College Board order does not establish compliance with every admissions instruction or extend an application deadline. Keep any clarification from admissions with the calendar.

## Spend SAT preparation time on a specific unmet condition

If SAT is part of your chosen qualification combination, compare both sections with the applicable requirement and identify the remaining preparation task. If SAT is not required for that route, evaluate whether another application on your list justifies it. The choice should follow real obligations and benefits, not the prestige of the university name or a universal target someone posted online.

[topin’s free SAT mock](/sat/practice-test), marked on the official scale, can provide preparation evidence. It is not an achieved official score for a university qualification requirement. Use the [Math pacing guide](/articles/sat-math-module-pacing) if timed execution is the specific issue, and practise the official Bluebook interface separately. topin uses its own graphing calculator, so interface familiarity should be checked in the official application too.

Finish with a route statement you can defend: “I am applying with this qualification combination, these subjects and this testing evidence.” Then check the university’s current policy again before submission. No table of SAT totals can replace that statement. The best next action may be a section-focused retake, an AP subject choice, clarification from a College or stronger course-specific preparation; choose the action that resolves the actual outstanding condition.

## FAQs

Can I enter Oxford with only an SAT score?

The published SAT option is part of an AP qualification combination, not an SAT-only pathway. Check your own accepted qualification route.

What SAT score does Oxford require with three APs?

The listed totals are 1480, 1470 or 1460 according to the course’s A-level equivalent requirement, with three APs at 5 in relevant subjects. The total must come from one sitting; Oxford does not superscore.

What is Cambridge’s science SAT requirement?

For its listed science/Economics grouping, the published SAT component is 1500 with Math at least 750, alongside the broader qualification requirements.

Does the US SAT/AP route automatically apply to CBSE students?

No. Check the route for the qualification you present, and seek advice on mixed combinations.

Does meeting a minimum guarantee an offer?

No. Qualification suitability and the testing component are parts of the admissions process. Course preparation and the remaining selection requirements still apply.
