# SAT Study Plan: 1-Month and 3-Month Schedules | topin

On this page

## Before you start: a baseline

Take a [full-length, timed practice test](/sat/practice-test) first, in one sitting with the 10-minute break. Note your section scores, which route you reached in each section, and every question you got wrong or guessed. Sort the mistakes by skill: for example, Transitions, Boundaries, quadratics, percentages. That list is your study plan.

Check whether you reached the harder module 2 in each section. If not, the first goal is module 1 accuracy, because [the easier route limits your score](/articles/how-the-digital-sat-is-scored) however well you do on it.

## One-month plan (about 6–8 hours a week)

__A four-week SAT plan__
| Week | Focus | Practice |
| ---- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------- |
| 1 | Baseline mock; learn the grammar rules ([Boundaries](/sat/reading-writing/boundaries), agreement, pronouns, possessives); Algebra fundamentals | Daily sets of 15–20 questions on your two weakest skills |
| 2 | Reading skills: Inferences, Command of Evidence, Transitions; [Advanced Math](/sat/math/advanced-math) (quadratic forms, exponentials) | Timed sets by skill; one timed module of each section |
| 3 | Second full mock; review every mistake; Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, Geometry and Trigonometry | Daily mixed sets; redo every question you missed in week 1 |
| 4 | Third full mock early in the week; light review of rules and formulas; test-day logistics | Short mixed sets only in the last two days; rest the day before |

## Three-month plan (about 4–6 hours a week)

* Month 1, foundations: baseline mock, then work through every skill once. Learn the grammar rules and the maths the reference sheet does not give you (quadratic formula, vertex form, circle equation, SOH-CAH-TOA). Practise untimed and read every explanation.
* Month 2, weak spots and timing: a full mock at the start and the middle of the month. Spend two thirds of your time on your three weakest skills. Start timing sets: about [71 seconds a question in Reading and Writing](/articles/sat-reading-writing-timing) and 95 in Math.
* Month 3, test conditions: a full mock every week or so, at the time of day you will sit the real test, with a full review of each before the next. Use [official Bluebook practice tests](/articles/bluebook-practice-tests-guide) for at least two of them.

In the last week, stop learning new content. Review your error log, redo the questions you have missed, and make sure Bluebook is installed and tested on the device you will use.

## How to review a mock

* Redo every wrong or guessed question without looking at the answer first.
* Label the reason: did not know the rule or method, misread the question, ran out of time, or careless slip.
* For knowledge gaps, learn the rule and do ten questions on that skill.
* For misreads and slips, write the habit that would have caught it, such as rereading the last line of a Math question.
* Keep a running error log, and look at it before each new mock.

topin gives you eight full-length SAT mocks with adaptive modules (the first is free) and practice questions by skill with explanations, so each step of this loop is in one place.

## FAQs

Is one month enough to study for the SAT?

One focused month is enough to learn the format, fix the most common grammar and algebra gaps and raise many scores noticeably. Large jumps of 200 points or more usually take longer.

How many hours should I study for the SAT?

There is no fixed number. It depends on the gap between your baseline score and your target: a small gap may need a few focused weeks, a large one several months of regular study.

How many practice tests should I take before the SAT?

Three to six full-length tests spread across your preparation works well, with a full review of each before the next.

Should I study Reading and Writing or Math first?

Start with whichever section is further from your target. Grammar rules and Algebra are the quickest wins for most students, so they are good places to begin.
