# SAT Test Day in India: ID and Packing Checklist | topin

On this page

## Start with the document you will actually present

College Board’s [India identification policy](https://satsuite.collegeboard.org/sat/what-to-bring-do/id-requirements) lists a valid passport with name, photograph and signature, a qualifying physical Aadhaar document, or the specified US military common access card. For Aadhaar, the accepted formats are the original government-issued hard-copy letter and valid PVC card. A downloaded printout, electronic card or screenshot is not an equivalent substitute.

Put the intended document on your desk now. Inspect its expiry date where applicable, photograph, legal name and condition. Do not assume a school card is sufficient because the general worldwide checklist mentions school identification. Country-specific instructions determine the India route, and travelling outside your home country adds a passport requirement. Read the actual rule for your situation rather than a generic packing list.

Our suggested audit uses three columns: document, registration and discrepancy. Compare each part of your name without shortening it to a familiar nickname. Check that the registration photograph still recognisably represents you. If something differs, contact College Board with the precise mismatch. The published name-change guidance asks for contact at least 30 days before the intended date; a last-minute conversation at the centre is a poor repair plan.

## Choose the right ID route for your situation

| Situation | Rule to check | Practical action |
| ------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------- |
| Indian student testing in India | Accepted passport or specified physical Aadhaar formats | Pack the original accepted document |
| Indian student testing abroad | Valid passport required for testing outside home country | Check passport and travel arrangements together |
| Student aged 21 or over | Government-issued photo ID; school ID insufficient | Use the qualifying government document |
| Name mismatch | Legal name must match registration | Contact support before test day |
| Digital document only | Electronic ID not accepted | Obtain an accepted physical original |

Imagine Ananya registered with her full legal name but has only a downloaded Aadhaar printout in her bag. Having the correct number and photograph does not settle the format problem. The repair is to obtain an accepted original document, not to increase the print quality. If she has a valid qualifying passport, she can assess that route instead. This example illustrates document format, not a prediction that any particular candidate will be admitted.

Imagine Ravi travels from India to another country because a local centre is full. He should not transfer the India Aadhaar rule to the overseas centre. The rule for testing outside the home country requires a passport, apart from the narrow military exception. Treat identity eligibility and travel eligibility as separate checks: meeting the SAT ID rule does not itself arrange entry to another country.

## Create the admission ticket on the testing device

College Board’s [packing instructions](https://satsuite.collegeboard.org/sat/what-to-bring-do/what-to-bring) say exam setup becomes available starting five days before the test. Complete it in Bluebook and obtain the up-to-date admission ticket; a printed ticket is preferred. The ticket confirms appointment details, while the physical identification establishes who you are. Neither replaces the other.

Our practical sequence is to sign in on the device you intend to take, check the displayed registration, complete the setup and print the resulting ticket. Read the centre address after printing, rather than relying on the address saved when you booked. Put the ticket beside your ID and compare them before closing the folder. If you change device, follow the current Bluebook setup instructions on the replacement.

Keep your College Board username and password available to you; do not depend on a family member answering a call during check-in. Test your ability to sign in independently before leaving home. The [device preparation guide](/articles/sat-bluebook-device-setup) covers approval, installation and borrowing. Here the goal is simply to make identity, appointment and device information agree before the morning becomes busy.

## Pack a small bag in a fixed order

Use a folder for the physical ID and ticket, then pack the charged testing device. College Board also lists pens or pencils for scratch work and account credentials among the essentials. An approved handheld calculator is optional because Bluebook provides an embedded calculator. Check current calculator policy if you bring one; owning a sophisticated calculator does not automatically make it acceptable.

Our suggested bag layout has three zones: admission documents, testing equipment and break items. Put the charger with the device rather than in a different bag. Keep a drink and snack where they can be reached at the permitted break without unpacking everything. If bringing a watch, use one that meets the rules, including the restriction on audible alarms. Follow staff instructions about where belongings are stored.

The published list permits a backup testing device, but carrying one is useful only if it is ready and you understand the staff-led switch process. Do not plan to move devices independently during a live test. Avoid packing study notes as something to consult in the break. Review permitted and prohibited items on College Board’s testing-rules page, and follow any individual medical or accommodation instructions relevant to you.

## Build a travel plan with a genuine buffer

Use the arrival instructions for your actual appointment; do not treat an arrival time quoted for another country or borrowed-device arrangement as universal. Our recommendation is to calculate the journey backwards: target arrival, expected journey, a transport buffer and time to eat and leave. Record the address and entrance information in advance. A school with several gates can require more navigation than its map pin suggests.

For example, if your personal target is to be at the gate at 07:15, the trip normally takes 45 minutes and you choose a 20-minute buffer, departure is 06:10\. Those numbers are an illustrative travel calculation, not College Board’s check-in schedule. If the route is unfamiliar, check it in advance and choose a realistic alternative if the usual vehicle becomes unavailable.

Recheck College Board’s [centre closure information](https://satsuite.collegeboard.org/sat/test-center-closings) and notifications close to departure. A booking confirmation from weeks ago cannot establish that a centre is operating today. If a notification changes the appointment, follow its instructions and save the update with your records. Do not make a second paid booking merely because a message is unclear; establish what happened to the first registration.

## Rehearse the morning without taking another full test

Use the final preparation session for a practical rehearsal: open Bluebook, confirm credentials, lay out documents, charge the device and check the route. This is our suggested routine, not an official requirement to take a final mock. If you already have reliable practice evidence, another late full test can create work you have no time to review before departure.

Earlier in preparation, [topin’s free SAT mock](/sat/practice-test), marked on the official scale, can help you rehearse sustained testing. topin uses its own graphing calculator, so also practise the official Bluebook interface before test day. Separate learning the exam’s pacing from verifying the exact application and device that College Board will use. Being comfortable with one does not complete the other check.

If you need approved adjustments, review the [SAT accommodations checklist](/articles/sat-accommodations-international) early. Do not leave the question of whether an adjustment is approved to a packing conversation the night before. Put the approval and its specific instructions alongside the registration record, then practise under those conditions where possible. The relevant question is what your own approval says, not what another student received.

## Use a specific escalation when something is wrong

If ID is missing or unacceptable, identify the exact problem and contact support; do not expect staff to overlook it because you travelled far. College Board says test centres need not hold a seat while a student goes home for identification. The published policy also states that fees are not refunded when dismissal results from invalid ID. Preventing the mismatch is therefore part of preparation, not merely administration.

If the problem is technical, tell staff what appears on screen and follow their instructions. Avoid making speculative changes to settings during check-in. If it is a centre closure or registration issue, keep the booking number and notification together. Distinguishing these categories makes your request answerable: “my registered centre changed” needs a different response from “my physical document has a different surname”.

After the sitting, save any relevant incident details without reproducing test questions. A short note can record when an interruption happened, who you informed and what instructions you received. That record is useful if you later need support. The checklist has succeeded when you can leave home with verified documents, a prepared device and a realistic journey, rather than hoping one of those pieces can be arranged at the gate.

## FAQs

Is a passport compulsory for SAT testing in India?

College Board also accepts the specified physical Aadhaar formats for India. Check the current country-specific rule and the separate passport requirement when testing outside your home country.

Can I show Aadhaar on my phone?

No. Electronic identification, screenshots and downloaded printouts do not meet the stated physical-document requirements. Use an accepted original format.

Do I need a printed admission ticket?

College Board prefers a printed, up-to-date ticket generated after Bluebook exam setup. The ticket does not replace acceptable physical ID.

Can I use a nickname on my SAT registration?

The legal name must match the accepted identification. Resolve a mismatch with College Board early rather than expecting a test-centre exception.

Should I bring my own calculator?

An approved handheld calculator is optional; Bluebook has an embedded calculator. Check the current policy for your model and practise the interface you intend to use.
