## Pace

The SAT gives more time per question: about [71 seconds in Reading and Writing](/articles/sat-reading-writing-timing) and 95 seconds in Math. The ACT gives about 42 seconds per English question, 67 per Math question and 67 per Reading question, and its reading passages are much longer than the SAT's 25-to-150-word texts. Students who read slowly or like to check their work often find the SAT's pace easier.

## Content

* Reading: the SAT has one short passage per question; the ACT has longer passages with several questions each.
* Grammar: both test punctuation, agreement and transitions. The SAT mixes them into Reading and Writing; the ACT has a dedicated English section.
* Maths: both cover algebra, functions, geometry, trigonometry and data. The ACT tends to include a little more geometry and trigonometry; the SAT includes typed-answer questions.
* Science: the ACT offers an optional Science section on its national test dates, scored separately; the SAT has science passages and data inside Reading and Writing but no science section.

## How to choose

* Take a full-length practice test of each, timed, and [compare percentiles](/articles/good-sat-score) rather than raw scores.
* If you run out of time on the ACT but not the SAT, the SAT's pace is probably a better fit.
* If you prefer working on paper, the ACT still offers paper testing; the SAT is digital only.
* [Check your colleges' policies](/articles/colleges-requiring-sat-2026): most accept either, and some may have preferences for scholarships or placement.

## FAQs

Do colleges prefer the SAT or the ACT?

US colleges that consider test scores accept both equally. Check each college's admissions page for its testing policy.

Is the SAT easier than the ACT?

Neither is easier overall. The SAT gives more time per question and shorter passages; the ACT is not adaptive and offers paper testing. Many students do noticeably better on one, which a practice test of each will show.

Does the ACT still have a science section?

Science is optional on the enhanced ACT and no longer counts towards the 1–36 composite, which is based on English, Math and Reading.
