# SAT vs JEE: Difficulty, Costs and Choices 2026 | topin

## They open different doors

JEE Main is the entrance test for NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes, and the qualifier for JEE Advanced, which decides IIT admission. The SAT is used by US colleges, many universities elsewhere, and a few Indian universities and overseas-applicant routes. Neither replaces the other: no SAT score gets you into an IIT, and no JEE rank meets a US college’s SAT or ACT requirement.

There is no official conversion between a JEE percentile and an SAT score. They test different things on different scales.

| Wrong answers | No penalty | Negative marking | Negative marking on many question types |

Two differences matter most for a JEE student. The SAT gives you a graphing calculator for every Math question, and it never penalises a wrong answer, so you should answer everything. [Our Desmos guide](/articles/desmos-sat-calculator-strategies) shows how to use the calculator to save time.

## Syllabus overlap

__Where SAT and JEE content overlap__
| Topic | On the SAT | On JEE |
| ---------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------ | --------------------------------------------------------- |
| Algebra and functions | Linear equations, systems, quadratics, exponentials | Covered in much more depth |
| Geometry and trigonometry | Area, volume, circles, right-triangle trigonometry | Covered in much more depth, including coordinate geometry |
| Data and statistics | Ratios, percentages, probability, reading graphs and studies | Statistics and probability, with less data interpretation |
| Calculus | Not tested | A major part of Mathematics |
| Physics and Chemistry | Not tested | Two of the three subjects |
| Reading, grammar and writing | Half the test: 54 questions in 64 minutes | Not tested |

A JEE student usually knows all the maths on the SAT. The traps are different: SAT questions are wordy, set in real-world contexts, and often ask what a number in a model means rather than for a long calculation. Read the last line first and answer exactly what it asks. [The SAT Math guide](/sat/math) breaks down each domain.

## Which is harder for a JEE student?

On content, JEE is far harder. On the SAT, the challenge for most JEE students is Reading and Writing: short passages with inference, evidence, vocabulary-in-context and grammar questions, about 71 seconds each. Reading English well is not the same as answering these accurately under time pressure; grammar questions test specific punctuation and agreement rules, not what sounds right.

Start with a full SAT diagnostic. Many JEE students find their Math score is already high and their Reading and Writing score is the gap; [the Reading and Writing guide](/sat/reading-writing) explains each question type.

Timing is the other half of the problem: with 32 minutes for 27 questions per module, [our pacing plan](/articles/sat-reading-writing-timing) shows where to spend and save time.

## Scoring and attempts

__Attempts and combining scores (2026 rules)__
| Rule | SAT | JEE |
| ----------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Attempts per year | Up to 8 weekend dates in 2026–27; no lifetime limit | Main: two sessions (January and April); Advanced: once a year |
| Lifetime limit | None | Advanced: two attempts in consecutive years |
| Combining attempts | Many colleges superscore your best sections | Main: the better of your two session scores; no mixing subjects |
| Qualifying for the next stage | Not applicable | Top 2,50,000 in Main can sit Advanced (plus ties) |

JEE Main percentiles are relative to everyone in your shift, so a 99 percentile does not mean 99% of the marks. SAT scores are on a fixed scale, and colleges that superscore take your best Reading and Writing and best Math from different dates.

## Cost

__Registration fees (SAT through June 2027; JEE 2026, centres in India)__
| Exam | Fee |
| ----------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------ |
| SAT in India | $111 per test ($68 plus a $43 international fee) |
| JEE Main Paper 1, general male candidate | ₹1,000 per session |
| JEE Advanced, female, SC, ST and PwD candidates | ₹1,600 |
| JEE Advanced, all other candidates | ₹3,200 |

The SAT is charged in US dollars, so the rupee cost depends on your card’s exchange rate. JEE fees vary by category, gender and number of papers. Studying abroad costs far more than any exam fee, so check tuition and financial aid before adding the SAT.

## When taking both makes sense

* IITs or NITs only: focus on JEE. The SAT adds nothing for these.
* US or other overseas universities only: prepare for the full SAT, Reading and Writing included.
* Both lists, and you would genuinely attend either: take both, with the SAT timed away from board exams and JEE sessions.
* Indian universities that accept the SAT, such as Ashoka, FLAME or Plaksha: check whether the SAT is your best route or one of several.

Some SAT routes in India, such as IIIT Hyderabad’s DASA and BITS International Student Admission, are only for students schooled abroad or with foreign passports, and the central DASA scheme for NITs now uses JEE Main. [Our guide to the SAT in India](/articles/sat-indian-universities-admission) sets out who can use each route.

## If you prepare for both

* Keep your JEE schedule as the base, and add SAT practice in fixed blocks rather than squeezing it in.
* Spend most SAT time on Reading and Writing: grammar rules first, then inference and evidence questions.
* Do one SAT Math module a week to learn the question style and the calculator.
* Take a full timed SAT mock every two to three weeks and review every mistake.

[topin’s first full-length SAT mock is free](/sat/practice-test), adaptive like the real test and scored on the 400–1600 scale with explanations, which shows quickly how big your Reading and Writing gap is.

## FAQs

Is the SAT easier than JEE Main?

In subject content, yes: no Physics, Chemistry or calculus. But the SAT’s Reading and Writing section is half the score and needs its own preparation.

Can I get into an IIT with SAT scores?

No. IIT undergraduate admission goes through JEE Advanced; the SAT is not accepted instead.

Does a good JEE rank mean a high SAT score?

Not necessarily. JEE students usually do well on SAT Math, but JEE does not test the reading and grammar skills in the other half of the SAT.

Should a JEE student prepare separately for SAT English?

Yes. Reading and Writing has no JEE equivalent, so take a diagnostic and practise its question types directly.

Is there negative marking on the SAT?

No. Unlike JEE, a wrong SAT answer costs nothing, so answer every question.

How many attempts are allowed for JEE Advanced?

Two, in consecutive years, subject to the other eligibility rules in that year’s brochure.
