# TOEFL Accommodations: Request and Timing Guide | topin

## Follow the approval-first sequence

ETS’s TOEFL accommodations page and current bulletin both require approval before scheduling. Start by describing what prevents access under standard conditions and the accommodation you need. Then follow the current request process, provide the required information and wait for the approval instructions. A normal appointment purchased earlier is not evidence that the requested support has been arranged.

This article explains the administrative workflow. It cannot determine whether your circumstances qualify, recommend a medical treatment or substitute for the documentation ETS requests. Discuss the relevant access needs with the qualified professional or institutional support office involved in your existing care or accommodations history.

Read the live TOEFL-specific page and the linked documents together. On 5 October 2026, the supplement linked by that page is labelled 2024–25, while the current general bulletin references 2026–27\. Treat that mismatch as a reason to obtain the current form and instructions from ETS, especially before relying on an older scheduling detail.

__Administrative sequence based on ETS guidance; individual documentation needs vary.__
| Stage | What to establish | Next action |
| -------------- | ------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------- |
| Before request | Access need and requested accommodation | Review live instructions and required evidence |
| Submission | Complete forms and supporting information | Keep confirmation of receipt |
| Review | Whether ETS needs more documentation | Respond through the stated route |
| Approval | Exactly what ETS has approved | Follow booking instructions |
| Appointment | Approved conditions attached to the session | Rehearse and confirm details |

Keep the approval email and the appointment confirmation together. You will need the former to understand what was authorised and the latter to know the scheduled location and time. Neither should be replaced by an informal assurance from a preparation provider.

## Turn a difficulty into a precise request

ETS lists examples including extended testing time, additional rest breaks, screen magnification, foreground and background colour choices, specialised keyboards and alternative formats. Some requests involve specialised assistance or omission of a section. Availability, evidence and approval are individual matters; seeing an option listed does not mean it will be approved automatically.

Write a functional statement before preparing documentation: under standard conditions, I cannot access the screen at the required size, or I need a specified break arrangement connected with a documented health need. This is an organisational exercise for explaining the request, not wording to copy regardless of whether it describes your circumstances.

Ask whether each accommodation is needed throughout the test or in a particular part. If an item is not on the public list, ETS says it can be described in the request form’s relevant section and recommends contacting Disability Services for uncertainty. Do not force a different need into an unrelated category merely because that option looks familiar.

Health-related items such as required equipment, beverages or snacks, or additional breaks, can also require the request procedure. The standard current test has no scheduled break. Make the distinction early between what you need to participate and ordinary test preparation preferences, such as wanting more planning time because a task feels difficult.

For room and equipment decisions at home, read the [Home Edition checklist](/articles/toefl-home-edition-equipment-2026). An approved accommodation and an otherwise compliant environment need to work together; do not assume approval automatically removes all ordinary room rules.

## Submit a complete packet and track what was received

The live page offers the ETS account route, including the accommodation-status or new-request option, and also describes email and mail alternatives through the supplement. Use the current instructions to determine the actual forms, supporting evidence and destination. Keep sensitive records within the official submission route and avoid circulating them to unrelated advisers.

Prepare an inventory rather than sending an unlabelled collection of attachments. For each required item, record its name, issuer, relevant date and whether it was submitted. If ETS asks for a specific updated evaluation or an explanation, answer that request directly. A larger pile of documents is not necessarily a more complete application.

* Confirm the identity details match your ETS account.
* Check every required field and signature on the current forms.
* List requested accommodations individually and explain the corresponding need.
* Include the supporting documents required for your request category.
* Keep the submission confirmation and any ETS follow-up together.

An existing school accommodation can be relevant history, but do not assume it transfers automatically to TOEFL. Ask ETS what evidence of earlier approval can be used in your case. Similarly, a previous ETS approval should be checked for validity and applicability before you reuse it for another appointment.

Use a status tracker with submitted, acknowledged, additional information requested and approved as separate states. Write the date beside each transition. This makes it possible to tell whether a delay is waiting for review or waiting for something you still need to provide.

## Build a calendar with review and appointment uncertainty

The TOEFL-specific live page estimates approximately six weeks once complete paperwork is received and another six weeks if further documentation is required. The current general bulletin describes four to six weeks, and the older linked supplement has a shorter additional-review estimate. For planning, use the more cautious live TOEFL-specific wording and ask ETS about your case.

A request submitted on 5 October does not necessarily start a six-week clock that day if the paperwork is incomplete. The estimate begins when ETS has the complete request. Keep a receipt date and a completeness status rather than calculating from the date you first opened the form.

__Original planning illustration, not promised ETS turnaround.__
| Week range | Possible work | Calendar implication |
| -------------- | ------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------- |
| 1–2 | Collect current forms and required evidence | Do not assume review has started |
| 3–8 | Allow an approximately six-week initial review | Keep preparation active while awaiting instructions |
| 9–14 | Possible further review after extra documentation | Protect deadline flexibility |
| After approval | Find and confirm a suitable appointment | Availability remains a separate constraint |

The illustration allows preparation time before submission and an additional review possibility. Your actual sequence may be shorter or longer. Add score release, recipient delivery and institution matching after the appointment. The [reporting deadline guide](/articles/toefl-send-scores-deadlines) explains why the test date alone is not the final application milestone.

If an application deadline is approaching, tell the receiving institution exactly which part of the process is pending and ask about its published late-evidence or alternative-evidence procedure. Do not state that an extension has been granted unless the institution confirms it. ETS approval cannot automatically change a university deadline.

## Practise the approved conditions accurately

Once approval arrives, read each condition and the booking instructions carefully. Record the applicable extra time, break arrangement, device or format exactly as approved. Do not translate a phrase such as extended time into a percentage you assume. If the approval is unclear, resolve the detail before creating a practice schedule around it.

Separate skill learning from rehearsal. You can use untimed exercises to learn a task, then use the approved timing for a full attempt. A standard timer does not fairly describe your preparation if your appointment uses different authorised conditions. Conversely, an arbitrary longer timer does not reproduce a specific approval.

topin’s [free TOEFL mock](/toefl/practice-test), marked on the official scale, can help identify task-level needs. Check whether the available practice controls can reproduce your individual approved conditions; if not, label that attempt accordingly. A platform practice estimate cannot confirm the accessibility of an ETS appointment.

Record the effect of the accommodation on access: could you read the display, operate the input method or complete the session under the approved schedule? Keep that separate from whether answers were correct. The purpose of the rehearsal is to find operational problems early and support language practice in conditions that match your appointment.

If an unfamiliar adaptive device or alternative format is involved, seek the official familiarisation instructions and learn the mechanics before a full rehearsal. Do not use test day as your first encounter with the approved arrangement.

## Confirm implementation before the appointment

Use the approval instructions to book, then compare the appointment details with the authorised conditions. Keep a clear list of any uncertainty: time allocation, break handling, permitted items, input device or score reporting when a section is omitted. Ask the appropriate ETS contact about those exact issues.

If a section is omitted under approval, do not assume every institution will accept the resulting report for its requirements. Confirm the receiving programme’s evidence policy with the exact approved test arrangement. That is an admissions question, while provision of the accommodation is an ETS question.

Before test day, revisit the [centre checklist](/articles/toefl-test-centre-checklist) or relevant home instructions and adapt them only where your approval changes the standard conditions. Bring or make available the documents the appointment instructions require. Keep the approval accessible for resolving an operational question.

If something differs at check-in, explain the specific difference and ask staff to resolve it through the approved process before proceeding. Afterwards, retain a factual incident record if necessary. The strongest administrative preparation ends with a confirmed appointment that implements the approval, rather than merely a successful request submission.

## FAQs

Should I book first and request extra time later?

No. ETS says accommodations must be approved before the test is scheduled. Follow the approval email’s booking instructions.

How long does the review take?

The live TOEFL-specific page estimates about six weeks after complete paperwork is received, potentially another six weeks if more documentation is required. These are estimates, and linked older documents use different wording.

Does a diagnosis automatically guarantee approval?

No. ETS evaluates requests under its documentation requirements. This article explains the workflow and does not determine eligibility or the evidence needed in an individual case.

Can I request something outside the listed examples?

ETS says to describe other requested accommodations in the relevant form section and contact Disability Services when uncertain. Obtain the current form and instructions.

Can I practise with ordinary timers?

Use ordinary exercises for skill work if helpful, but label timed rehearsals by their actual conditions. Once approved, practise the specific authorised timing and setup where your tools can reproduce them.
