# TOEFL Registration in India: Passport Checks | topin

## Start with the document you will physically present

Read the country-specific requirements for the place where you will test, using your citizenship as well as location. The general ETS page explains that requirements vary with those two factors. For testing in India, the India-specific page lists a passport. Use the original valid document, with a recognisable photograph and the required signature, rather than assuming any familiar domestic identity card will work. The 2026–27 bulletin lists the Aadhaar card as unacceptable under any circumstances.

A photograph on your phone, a scanned passport or a photocopy is not the physical original ETS describes. Check the expiration date against the appointment date, not the day you create the account. If your passport is being renewed or held for another application, resolve when you will actually have the acceptable document before paying for a date.

Do not infer that a secondary document can replace the passport. ETS supplemental-ID rules address specified deficiencies or questions about a primary document, and explicitly do not solve family-name discrepancies. The safest registration plan is the one you can support with the correct original ID on the actual day.

## Enter names carefully: initials are not full names

ETS requires the registered first and last names and their spelling to match the ID, excluding accents. It says to enter the entire given name, not a nickname or an initial, and to include a complete multipart family name. Its general page makes the middle initial optional. Follow the fields on your passport instead of reconstructing a name from an academic certificate.

For an invented example, a passport showing given name Meera Lakshmi and surname Rao should not become M L Rao merely because that abbreviation appears on a university transcript. Enter the complete relevant names in the account fields. Your application record may then need its own matching-name update; that is a separate administrative step.

If the passport has no surname, a single name, a name order you cannot represent or a recent legal change, do not invent a placeholder such as FNU from an online discussion. Ask TOEFL Services how to register with that document before payment. Record their response and check that the resulting account and appointment use the instructed representation.

For an existing ETS account, compare its name and date of birth against your current passport. An account created for an earlier test may contain initials or old details. The [test-day checklist](/articles/toefl-test-centre-checklist) starts with this same comparison because a successful login says nothing about whether the proctor can admit you.

## Choose a usable date by working backwards

The general 2026–27 bulletin says regular online registration closes seven full days before the test, with express online registration closing two days before. Local availability and the terms in your booking still matter. Do not treat the final registration deadline as a recommended booking date: a suitable centre or time may be unavailable earlier.

Start with the earliest application deadline that requires a score. Then allow time for preparation, the appointment, official score release, recipient delivery and matching to your application. ETS’s current getting-scores page says three days for account release for the standard current test, while institution delivery has separate approximate windows. Use an original planning example: an applicant has six weeks until a report-receipt deadline and wants space for another attempt if necessary. They could aim for a first appointment near the end of week two, review the official result and decide on a later slot. This is a planning illustration, not a guaranteed sufficient window for every institution or delivery method.

Book only after checking that the programme accepts the current test and chosen delivery mode. If your application uses a special pathway, follow that pathway’s own booking guidance. Australia is the clearest case: the 2026–27 bulletin says only tests taken before 21 January 2026 and the separate TOEFL iBT Australia product are currently approved for Australian visa purposes, so a standard current-format iBT booking will not serve a visa application there. This article concerns ordinary current-format iBT registration in India, and does not replace purpose-specific evidence rules.

## Review the order before pressing pay

Sign in to your own ETS account and choose the exact test product. Compare the appointment date, start time, city, centre address and delivery mode on the review screen. If you intend to test at home, complete the [Home Edition equipment checks](/articles/toefl-home-edition-equipment-2026) before assuming your laptop and room qualify.

Do not select a centre based only on the city name. Two locations can involve very different journeys. Check the full address, entry instructions and realistic travel time at the appointment hour. Save an offline copy of the address for the journey, since a navigation app or mobile connection may not work when you need it.

Review the currency, tax wording and optional add-ons. ETS publishes regional and global fee listings that do not consistently agree across all services, as explained in the [India fee budget](/articles/toefl-fees-india-budget). Use the actual order total for your financial decision and keep the receipt instead of relying on a fee copied into a spreadsheet months earlier.

If you want included score recipients, identify the exact receiving school or division and use its official instructions for institution and department codes. A famous university can have multiple receiving offices. If preserving score-review eligibility matters, read that policy before selecting even one recipient. The decision belongs before the order deadline, not after results arrive.

## A payment notification is not an appointment record

After payment, open the account’s appointment details and verify the test, date and mode again. Save the ETS confirmation, appointment identifier and payment record. The bank debit and the test confirmation are different evidence: one shows a financial event and the other shows the appointment you intend to attend.

If money leaves your account but the appointment is missing, check the account and confirmation email before attempting another payment. Collect the time, amount, order reference and any error message for ETS support. Do not share complete card numbers or passwords in a support message. Ask them to confirm whether an order exists and what the next step should be.

If a date or mode is wrong, act promptly through the approved rescheduling route. The general bulletin requires at least four full days before the appointment for ordinary rescheduling or cancellation and says these cannot be processed at the test centre or by ordinary email. Check your appointment terms and the account workflow rather than assuming an email has changed it.

Set two calendar reminders: an early booking review and the official test time. The early review should leave room to resolve ID or transport problems before the change deadline. Include the stated time zone, centre address and where you stored the confirmation. A reminder titled TOEFL is too sparse when you are handling several deadlines.

## Use the final week to test the whole routine

Practise with the same name and application records you intend to use when sending scores. Create a small record containing the registered name, date of birth, appointment identifier, test date and relevant university application identifiers. That makes a later score-matching question easier to answer without repeatedly searching your inbox.

* Recheck the original passport and account-name match.
* Open the final appointment confirmation and read any new instructions.
* Calculate centre arrival from the required early check-in time.
* Keep the appointment change deadline visible until it passes.
* Confirm that your score recipient choices still match the shortlist.

If a last-minute document problem appears, contact ETS with the precise mismatch and appointment details. Do not arrive expecting a proctor to waive it because you travelled far or can show another document. The useful question is how to resolve the registration correctly while a permitted solution is still available.

You are ready administratively when the accepted document is available, the account matches it, the appointment is confirmed and the score timeline fits your application. Treat those as four separate checks. Strong English preparation cannot substitute for any of them.

## FAQs

Can I register for TOEFL in India with initials?

ETS says to provide the entire first and last names matching your ID, excluding accents. Do not use only a given-name initial. If the passport fields cannot be represented correctly, contact TOEFL Services before registration.

Is Aadhaar enough instead of a passport?

No. The India-specific ETS page lists a passport as the primary ID, and the 2026–27 bulletin names the Aadhaar card among documents that are not acceptable as primary or supplemental ID under any circumstances.

What if my passport has no surname?

Ask TOEFL Services how to enter the name before paying. This page does not prescribe a placeholder because acceptance depends on the actual document and registration instructions.

How late can I book online?

The general current bulletin gives seven full days for regular online registration and two days for express registration. Available appointments and your local booking conditions still control the options you see.

Do I need to print my passport?

A printout is not the original passport. ETS’s general rules require original physical ID. Save the appointment confirmation separately, and follow its instructions for what to bring.
