# TOEFL Score Validity: Plan Your Application Dates | topin

## Keep ETS validity and admissions acceptance separate

ETS’s current understanding-scores page says TOEFL iBT scores are valid for two years from the test date and will not be sent after that period. The current bulletin also says results more than two years old cannot be reported or verified. The clock begins with the appointment, not score release, PDF download or the application start.

A university can publish its own earliest acceptable test date for an intake. That can be anchored differently from the day you request an official report. You need an answer to both questions: can ETS report it now, and does the receiving programme accept this date for the intended application?

__Two separate checks; programme-specific dates must come from the institution.__
| Question | Authority | Evidence |
| ------------------------------------------------------ | ---------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------- |
| Can ETS send this result now? | ETS two-year policy | Official test date and account reporting availability |
| Is the date acceptable for this intake? | Receiving university or programme | Published earliest test date or confirmed rule |
| Is a PDF sufficient at this stage? | Receiving application instructions | Self-report or upload policy |
| Does a later verification stage need a current result? | Receiving institution | Conditions-of-admission instructions |

Do not merge these into a single expires field unless you identify what it means. An application tracker should show the ETS reporting window and the institution’s rule separately. That is especially useful if you are applying to several countries or to intakes spread across different months.

## Use actual test dates in worked calendar checks

For an original illustration, a test taken on 12 December 2024 approaches its two-year anniversary in December 2026\. A result downloaded on 15 December 2024 or resent during 2025 does not receive a new two-year life. Plan reporting well before the boundary and check the account’s actual availability instead of risking a last-day interpretation.

Now consider a test taken on 2 October 2024 and an official-report order planned for 5 October 2026\. The test is already more than two years old. An intact PDF on your laptop cannot make ETS send or verify it under the current policy. Ask the institution about an accepted alternative only if its rules permit one; otherwise plan a new test.

For a newer example, a test on 10 February 2026 has substantially more ETS reporting time available for late-2026 applications. That still does not automatically meet a programme that states a particular intake window. Compare the exact test date with the actual policy rather than assuming all results from the current format count.

These examples deliberately avoid declaring the precise final hour on a boundary date. Time zones and account handling matter when an order is very close to expiry. The practical solution is early reporting and a current availability check, not an improvised legal interpretation of the word two.

Use the [score delivery guide](/articles/toefl-send-scores-deadlines) to add the reporting and matching stages. A report ordered just before expiry may still face an institutional question about whether the test date meets the intake rule.

## Read the university’s own intake window

Harvard Griffin GSAS’s page checked on 5 October 2026 says fall 2027 applicants may submit tests taken no earlier than 5 January 2025\. It also warns that a verified portal status does not by itself establish validity within its identified window. This is an exact named-school example, not a rule for every Harvard programme.

Stanford Graduate Admissions lists 1 September 2024 as the earliest valid English-proficiency test date for Autumn 2027–2028 applications opening in September 2026\. It separately describes official reporting. Therefore, a date can fit the published intake table while nearing the end of ETS’s ability to supply another report.

__Selected official policies checked 5 October 2026; scope is part of the rule.__
| Named admissions unit and intake | Published earliest date | Additional check |
| ----------------------------------- | ----------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------- |
| Harvard Griffin GSAS, fall 2027 | 5 January 2025 | Official report and stated valid range |
| Stanford graduate, Autumn 2027–2028 | 1 September 2024 | ETS reporting availability and programme instructions |
| A programme not covered here | Look up its own rule | Do not borrow either example |

Write down the intake year, degree and admissions unit beside every copied date. A rule updated for a later cycle can replace an older table without a prominent announcement. Recheck the live source before placing a report order, especially if a result is near the edge.

If a programme says valid for two years but does not identify the reference date, ask whether it means application submission, deadline, enrolment or another verification event. Attach the actual test date. A specific question is much easier for admissions to answer than are my TOEFL scores still valid?

## An older best section needs its own date check

ETS MyBest combines valid section results in the two-year window. If your strongest Reading came from a substantially older sitting than your latest test, that earlier date remains relevant. A fresh appointment does not rejuvenate the old section as a new performance.

For an invented profile, your latest sitting has Reading 4.5 and Speaking 5, while an earlier sitting supplies Reading 5.5\. If the earlier score leaves the relevant window, you should not assume the official combined result remains unchanged. Verify the current official report and the receiving programme’s MyBest policy.

Our [MyBest application guide](/articles/toefl-mybest-scores-application) explains the difference between an official combined profile and a single-sitting result. The date rule may have to be checked for each contribution, particularly when the institution specifies a narrower acceptance window or separate reporting requirements.

Keep a simple contribution record with section, score, source test date and relevant deadline. It can show why a new full test is needed even though three skills appear comfortably above the target. The problem may be an expiring contribution rather than a recent language weakness.

Do not solve that problem by editing a downloaded report, relabelling a sitting or typing an old section score under a new date. Ask the receiving office how it evaluates the official report, and submit accurate dates and values.

## Choose between early reporting and another appointment

If the result is still reportable and acceptable for the intake, send the required official evidence with enough delivery room. Early reporting is useful when the receiver’s policy supports it, but does not change the original test date. Keep the order receipt and monitor the matching status.

If the result meets the score target but will not meet the relevant date rule, a retake may be administrative rather than remedial. Prepare for the current tasks rather than assuming previous success is enough. Check how much the format differs from the test you originally took, using the [old-versus-new guide](/articles/old-vs-new-toefl).

If the result is also below a section minimum, combine the date issue with a targeted practice plan. First identify the blocking requirement, then decide when to test based on readiness and reporting time. Taking the earliest available slot may solve neither problem if it does not allow usable preparation.

topin’s [free TOEFL mock](/toefl/practice-test), marked on the official scale, provides a current-format rehearsal. Label it as practice and compare the section profile with your targets. An older official score and a newer mock estimate are different evidence, so neither should be substituted for the other on an application.

Include the financial cost of another appointment and any new reports. You can use the [India fee budget](/articles/toefl-fees-india-budget) to organise those lines without assuming a national fee copied from an old result remains current.

## Create an expiry tracker you can actually maintain

Use one row per official sitting and one row per programme rule. Record the official date, report availability, intake, earliest accepted date, required evidence and deadline. Add the source URL and last-checked date to the programme row. This is enough to expose most timing conflicts without a complex spreadsheet.

* Enter the test date directly from the official report.
* Identify the institution’s reference date or earliest accepted test date.
* Check whether official reporting is still possible in the ETS account.
* Order early enough for the receiver’s delivery and matching process.
* Flag MyBest contributions that are older than the latest sitting.
* Recheck policies if the intake or application deadline changes.

Use a status such as acceptable and reportable, acceptable but reporting unresolved, or outside the programme window. Each label should lead to a next action. Vague colours like green and amber do not explain which rule has been checked and which question remains.

Before submitting, audit the exact result you are using. The date in the portal, the PDF and the reporting receipt should refer to the correct sitting or authorised MyBest entry. A verified score can still be outside an intake policy, so verify acceptance as well as authenticity.

Once the report is matched and its validity confirmed for the relevant stage, keep that evidence with the application. If the institution later asks for another report or changes the intake, reopen the date check instead of assuming the earlier confirmation applies indefinitely.

## FAQs

Is TOEFL valid for two years from release?

No. ETS validity runs from the test date. Score release, PDF download and sending another report do not restart the clock.

Does a saved PDF remain official evidence after expiry?

You can retain it as a record, but it does not extend ETS’s reporting or verification window. The institution also decides what evidence and test dates it accepts.

Does verified mean valid for my intake?

Not necessarily. Harvard Griffin GSAS explicitly distinguishes official verification from meeting its intake validity range. Check the programme’s date rule separately.

Can a new test preserve an old MyBest section?

A new sitting does not make an old section newly tested. MyBest uses valid contributions, so check the old source date and the current official profile.

Should I order a report on the final day?

Plan earlier. Exact boundary handling and time zones can complicate a last-day order, and delivery and application matching still need time.
