## Calculate arrival from check-in, not the test clock

The ETS 2026–27 bulletin requires arrival at least 30 minutes before a centre appointment. It says late arrival or check-in after the assigned start prevents testing and does not receive a fee refund. Use that early-arrival time as the destination time in your travel plan, then add a realistic local buffer for finding the entrance and passing security.

For an invented 10:00 appointment, required arrival is no later than 09:30\. If your normal journey is 45 minutes, leaving at 08:45 merely reaches that threshold under ordinary conditions. A personal target of 09:10 would mean leaving at 08:25 before an additional traffic allowance. Those earlier times are planning choices, not extra ETS rules.

__Original arrival plan for a 10:00 centre appointment; adapt travel to your city.__
| Time | Action | Reason |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------- |
| Previous evening | Read confirmation and centre address | Find changed instructions before travelling |
| 08:25 | Leave for a typical 45-minute journey | Aim to reach the area at 09:10 |
| 09:10 | Find the correct entrance | Allow room to locate the centre |
| By 09:30 | Be present for check-in | ETS minimum early arrival |
| 10:00 | Assigned test start | Late check-in is not a safe plan |

Read the actual appointment email again the day before. A centre address can be inside a large building, and an entrance visible on a map may be inaccessible at the test hour. Save the full location and any specific instructions offline. Ask someone dropping you off to plan their wait elsewhere rather than assuming they can enter.

## Pack for admission and secure storage

Bring the acceptable original valid ID specified for your testing location and citizenship. ETS’s general ID page requires matching names and date of birth, a recognisable photograph and the required signature. India-specific guidance lists a passport as the primary document. Resolve any discrepancy before the journey; a secondary document does not automatically repair a surname mismatch.

Use the [passport registration checklist](/articles/toefl-registration-passport-india) for that comparison. Check the physical passport in your bag, not simply a screenshot of its details. If another appointment or visa process needs the passport during the same week, plan which original document will actually be available on TOEFL day.

* Carry the acceptable original ID and saved appointment details.
* Bring only necessary personal belongings and expect to store them as directed.
* Plan food, water and toilet needs before testing begins.
* Remove reliance on a phone for information you need inside the testing room.
* Leave study notes outside the test area and follow staff instructions for storage.

ETS says centre scratch paper and pencils are provided, and personal electronic devices must be stored with your belongings. Do not plan to bring your own annotated notebook as a substitute. Your phone can help you reach the building but cannot remain an active study or timing tool during testing.

Keep valuables to a minimum as a practical travel choice. The relevant question for packing is whether an item is needed for admission or the journey. If you need a medical item, drink or additional break during the session, use the [accommodations process](/articles/toefl-accommodations-request-timeline) before booking rather than relying on a last-minute exception.

## Expect identity and security checks

The bulletin describes possible centre identity checks including photographs, signature comparison and biometric or electronic confirmation. It also describes security measures such as visual inspection or electronic scanning. The exact procedure can vary; follow the administrator’s instructions instead of treating a friend’s previous visit as a universal script.

Check-in is not an opportunity to negotiate an ID spelling change. If the account and document differ, contact TOEFL Services in advance. On arrival, present the document the registration was based on and respond clearly to instructions. If a detail appears wrong, state the specific discrepancy immediately and ask the administrator how to proceed.

At the assigned workstation, make sure you understand the directions and can operate the controls. Do not race through an equipment check because you want to finish sooner. A missed instruction can create a larger problem during a timed task. Ask staff about an unclear operational instruction before beginning the relevant part.

A helpful practical routine is seat, screen, sound, microphone, directions. Check comfort and visibility; confirm the audio is intelligible; complete the microphone check as instructed; then read the task directions. That routine is ours, and it does not authorise touching another workstation or changing settings the centre controls.

If headphones, a keyboard or the microphone seem faulty, raise the issue at that point. Distinguish a device problem from ordinary uncertainty about an answer. Saying the microphone is not recording is a useful operational report; asking staff how to solve the question is not.

## Rehearse a continuous session with the right controls

ETS lists base times of roughly 30 minutes Reading, 29 Listening, 23 Writing and eight Speaking. It asks you to allow approximately two hours including directions and says adaptive timings and item counts can vary. Do not schedule a train or work call at exactly 90 minutes after the start based on adding the section figures.

There is no scheduled break on the standard current test. Practise sustaining attention across all four sections. On the actual day, follow the administrator’s instructions for any unexpected need; do not assume stepping away pauses the test or creates additional time. Approved conditions are a separate case and should be arranged beforehand.

Navigation differs by section. The current ETS sample directions allow Reading Next and Back within the same module, with no return to the first module after starting the second. Listening directions do not allow returning to previous questions. Our [adaptive pacing guide](/articles/toefl-adaptive-pacing-2026) develops a review plan that respects that difference.

Speaking is recorded. Use your normal clear voice during the microphone check and responses. If other candidates are audible, return your attention to the question and your own response rather than listening to their answers. If the conditions prevent you hearing your own test audio, raise the specific problem with the administrator.

Take topin’s [free full-length TOEFL mock](/toefl/practice-test), marked on the official scale, as a continuous rehearsal. Include spoken answers, typed writing and the transitions. A good practice routine also records which section becomes less controlled when you reach it after the earlier work.

## Report a problem while it can still be observed

If audio disappears, the screen freezes or a device fails, alert the test administrator promptly and follow instructions. Do not attempt an unauthorised restart, open another application or use your phone to diagnose the workstation. Give a short description of the observable fault and when it occurred.

A useful report is: the audio stopped midway through the current recording, or the keyboard is not entering letters in the response field. An unhelpful report is: the test is broken. Concrete information helps staff determine what they can check and provides a clearer account if you need to contact ETS later.

After the session, write a factual personal incident record without reproducing secure test content. Include the centre, appointment identifier, approximate time, affected section, what staff observed and what action they took. If a case or incident reference is available, keep it with your booking documents.

The bulletin treats ETS cancellations and technical or administrative issues under specific policies, with decisions depending on circumstances. Do not assume an incident automatically earns a refund, a score adjustment or another appointment. Contact ETS with the record and ask which procedure applies. The immediate aim is documenting the disruption accurately.

If the issue was anxiety or difficult questions rather than a fault, evaluate it after you receive official scores. Feeling that an answer went badly is not evidence of a device failure. Keep preparation decisions separate from incident reporting so each concern reaches the right route.

## Leave with a score and application follow-up plan

At the end, read the score-reporting or cancellation choice carefully. The bulletin says cancelling applies to all sections and does not refund the fee. Reinstatement has its own request window and fee. See the [score review and cancellation guide](/articles/toefl-score-review-cancellation) before deciding based on a moment of frustration.

Record the expected official score date shown at the end of your test. ETS’s getting-scores page gives three days for the current standard test, but the date in your session and any account status are more useful than an old preparation blog. A university receiving the report remains a separate stage.

Before leaving, return centre materials as instructed and collect stored belongings. Once you have access to your phone again, check the transport plan rather than immediately spending the journey analysing remembered questions. Secure content should not be reconstructed or circulated.

When results appear, compare all four section scores with your actual programme requirements. Keep the test-day incident record if relevant and update your reporting tracker. Whether you need another attempt depends on the official result and the application policy, not how relieved or disappointed you felt when the test ended.

## FAQs

How early should I arrive?

ETS requires at least 30 minutes before your assigned centre start. Add your own travel and entrance buffer so ordinary delays do not put you at the minimum arrival time.

Is there a break on the current TOEFL?

The standard current test has no scheduled break. Arrange any needed approved conditions through ETS before scheduling, and follow administrator instructions for unexpected needs.

Can I bring my own paper?

ETS provides scratch paper and pencils at centres. Follow centre instructions for all materials and storage; do not bring prepared notes into the test area.

Can I return to Listening questions?

The current ETS sample directions say you cannot return to previous Listening questions. Reading permits return within a module, but not across a completed module boundary.

What should I do if the microphone fails?

Notify the administrator promptly with a specific description and follow their instructions. Do not attempt unauthorised equipment changes. Keep a factual incident record afterwards.
