Topics include number properties, percents, ratios, rates and work, equations, inequalities, exponents, counting, probability and statistics. Tip: Look at the answer choices before you calculate. If they are far apart, estimate; if they are expressions in a variable, pick a simple number and test each choice. ## How GMAT Quant is scored Quant is scored 60–90\. The section adapts after every question, so your score depends on how hard the questions you answer correctly are, not only on how many you get right. Leaving questions unanswered at the end lowers your score, so guessing beats running out of time. Quant counts for one third of the 205–805 total, equal to Verbal and Data Insights. ## How to prepare for GMAT Quant 1. 1 ### Budget about two minutes a question 45 minutes for 21 questions is just over two minutes each. Check the clock after questions 7 and 14; you want roughly 30 and 15 minutes left. If you are behind, make the next hard question a quick guess to get back on pace. 2. 2 ### Know when to cut a question If you have no clear plan after 30 seconds, or you have spent three minutes without an answer, eliminate what you can, guess and move on. One lost question costs far less than rushing the last five. 3. 3 ### Drill mental arithmetic without a calculator Learn the fraction, decimal and percent equivalents up to twelfths, squares to 20 and powers of 2 and 3\. Practise simplifying before you multiply, since most GMAT arithmetic is designed to cancel. 4. 4 ### Translate word problems before solving Write each quantity as a variable and each sentence as an equation before doing any maths. Most word problem errors come from a misread relationship, such as 'percent of' versus 'percent more than'. 5. 5 ### Review by error type, not by score After each practice set, tag every miss as a concept gap, a careless slip or a timing problem. Concept gaps need study, slips need a checking habit, and timing problems need earlier guessing. topin's practice explanations show the fastest method and why each trap answer is wrong. ## Common GMAT Quant mistakes * Answering the wrong question, such as solving for x when the question asks for 2x or x + y. * Missing a case in number properties questions, for example forgetting negatives, zero or fractions. * Spending five minutes on one hard question and then guessing on the last several. * Studying geometry, which is no longer tested in GMAT Focus Quant. * Relying on long calculations instead of estimating from answer choices that are far apart. ## GMAT Quant questions, answered Is there a calculator on GMAT Quant? No. Quantitative Reasoning has no calculator, so the numbers are chosen to work out by hand. The on-screen calculator is only available in Data Insights. How many questions are in GMAT Focus Quant? 21 questions in 45 minutes, all Problem Solving with five answer choices. Is geometry tested on the GMAT Focus Edition? No. GMAT Focus Quant covers arithmetic and algebra only. Data Sufficiency also moved out of Quant and into Data Insights. What is a good GMAT Focus Quant score? It depends on the programmes you are applying to. Check the class profiles of your target schools and aim for a Quant score in line with their admitted students, since a strong Quant score reassures admissions teams about analytical coursework. Is it bad to leave GMAT Quant questions unanswered? Yes.
