You write an essay that takes a clear position and supports it. Tip: Read the instructions as carefully as the statement, because they vary and your essay must answer the specific task. A qualified position, agreeing under some conditions and not others, is often easier to argue convincingly than total agreement or disagreement. ## How GRE Analytical Writing is scored Your essay is scored holistically from 0 to 6 in half-point steps, on how clearly you take a position, how well you develop it with reasons and examples, how logically it is organised and how precisely you use language. Length alone does not raise a score, and small spelling or grammar errors matter far less than the quality of your reasoning. A short plan makes the essay easier to organise and stops you changing your mind halfway through. 2. 2 ### Use a simple, clear structure Open with a paragraph that states your position and how far you agree. Give each reason its own body paragraph with a concrete example, add a paragraph that addresses the strongest counterargument, and close with a brief conclusion that restates your position. 3. 3 ### Follow the specific instructions Each prompt comes with an instruction, such as considering when the statement might not hold or addressing both views. Answer it directly and visibly, ideally in its own paragraph, because an essay that ignores the instructions cannot score at the top. 4. 4 ### Choose specific examples Examples from history, science, business or your own field are more persuasive than hypothetical ones. Build a short bank of versatile examples in advance, then explain how each supports your reason rather than just naming it. 5. 5 ### Save time to proofread Keep the last two to three minutes for a read-through, since there is no spell-check. One. Since September 2023 the GRE has a single Analyze an Issue essay; the Analyze an Argument task was removed. How long is the GRE Analytical Writing section? 30 minutes for the one Issue essay, and it is the first section of the test. How long should a GRE Issue essay be? There is no word limit or minimum. What matters is a clear position developed with specific reasons and examples; most well-developed essays run to four or five paragraphs. What is a good GRE Analytical Writing score? On the scoring guide, a 4 describes competent, adequately organised writing, and 5 and 6 describe strong and outstanding essays. Programmes that involve a lot of writing, such as humanities, law and policy, tend to look for higher scores, so check what your target programmes publish. Does Analytical Writing affect my Verbal or Quant score?
