Question 1 · GRE Verbal · [Text Completion](/gre/verbal/text-completion) Although the committee's report was praised for its (i)\_\_\_\_, critics noted that its brevity came at a cost: several findings central to the policy debate were (ii)\_\_\_\_ rather than examined in depth. 1. ABlank (i): concision / exhaustiveness / ambiguity 2. BBlank (ii): scrutinised / glossed over / substantiated Show the answer Blank (i): concision. Blank (ii): glossed over. Start with blank (ii), which has the clearest clue: "rather than examined in depth" needs a contrast with careful examination, so glossed over fits. Scrutinised means the same as examined, which the contrast rules out, and substantiated does not oppose examining. For blank (i), "its brevity" tells you what the report was praised for, so concision fits. Exhaustiveness contradicts brevity, and ambiguity is not something a report is praised for. "Although" confirms the shape: praise for being short, then the cost of being short. Question 2 · GRE Quant · [Quantitative Comparison](/gre/quant/quantitative-comparison) x is a nonzero number and -1 < x < 1\. Quantity A: x^2 Quantity B: x 1. AQuantity A is greater. 2. BQuantity B is greater. 3. CThe two quantities are equal. 4. DThe relationship cannot be determined from the information given. Try a negative value: x = -0.5 gives Quantity A = 0.25 and Quantity B = -0.5, so A is greater. Two allowed values give different results, so the answer is D. Anyone who only tries a positive fraction picks B, and anyone who assumes squaring makes numbers bigger picks A. Question 3 · GRE Quant · [Numeric Entry](/gre/quant/numeric-entry) A jacket's price was raised by 20 percent, and the new price was then reduced by 25 percent. The final price was $54\. What was the original price, in dollars? Show the answer 60 Let the original price be p. After a 20 percent rise it is 1.2p, and after a 25 percent cut it is 0.75 × 1.2p = 0.9p. So 0.9p = 54 and p = 60\. Check: 60 × 1.2 = 72, and 72 × 0.75 = 54\.
