In total that is 98 questions in 2 hours 14 minutes of testing, plus the break, and a total score from 400 to 1600\. Each module contains two unscored pretest questions that look exactly like the others, so treat every question as if it counts.

## How the adaptive modules work

Each section is multistage adaptive. Module 1 has a broad mix of easy, medium and hard questions, and everyone gets the same kind of module 1\. Based on how you do, module 2 is either harder or easier on average. Reading and Writing and Math route separately, so you can reach the harder module in one and not the other.

Within a module you can move freely, skip questions, mark them for review and change answers. When the timer reaches zero you move on automatically, and you cannot return to an earlier module. On test day you cannot leave a module early; in Bluebook practice tests you can.

The harder module 2 is what makes the top of the scale reachable. College Board does not publish where the easier route tops out, but prep teachers generally estimate it at around 600 to 650 per section, which is why accuracy in module 1 matters so much. Our guide to SAT scoring goes through this in detail.

## What is on Reading and Writing

Every question has its own passage of 25 to 150 words, sometimes with a table or graph, or a pair of short texts. The questions come in four domains, always in the same order within a module:

* Craft and Structure (about 28%): Words in Context, Text Structure and Purpose, Cross-Text Connections.
* Information and Ideas (about 26%): Central Ideas and Details, Command of Evidence (textual and quantitative), Inferences.
* Standard English Conventions (about 26%): Boundaries (punctuation) and Form, Structure, and Sense (grammar), mixed together.
* Expression of Ideas (about 20%): Transitions, then Rhetorical Synthesis to finish.

Within each skill, questions run from easier to harder, and grammar questions run easier to harder regardless of the rule tested. Knowing the order lets you plan your time: grammar, Transitions and Rhetorical Synthesis are usually quicker than Inferences and Command of Evidence.

## What is on Math

* Algebra (about 35%): linear equations, functions, systems and inequalities.
* Advanced Math (about 35%): equivalent expressions, quadratics, exponentials and other nonlinear functions.
* Problem-Solving and Data Analysis (about 15%): ratios, percentages, statistics, probability and studies.
* Geometry and Trigonometry (about 15%): area, volume, triangles, right-triangle trigonometry and circles.

The four domains are mixed together, ordered from easier to harder across each module. About 30% of questions are set in a short real-world context. A calculator is allowed throughout: Bluebook has a Desmos graphing calculator built in, and you may bring your own approved calculator. A reference sheet of geometry formulas is available on every Math question.

About a quarter of Math questions ask you to type your own answer. Negative answers are allowed, and the box takes up to five characters (six with a minus sign). Fractions and decimals are fine; mixed numbers are not.

## Tools on screen

* A countdown timer you can hide until the last five minutes, when it reappears with an alert.
* Mark for Review, to flag questions and jump back to them from the question menu.
* An option eliminator to cross out choices, with undo.
* Highlights and notes on Reading and Writing passages.
* The Desmos graphing calculator and the reference sheet on Math. From Fall 2026 the calculator can be resized and charts can be zoomed.

topin's SAT mocks follow the same structure, timing and adaptive routing, with original questions, a built-in graphing calculator and the formula reference, and your first mock is free.

## FAQs

How long is the digital SAT?

2 hours 14 minutes of testing: 64 minutes of Reading and Writing and 70 minutes of Math, with a 10-minute break between them.

How many questions are on the digital SAT?

98: 54 in Reading and Writing and 44 in Math. Two questions in each module are unscored pretest items.

Is the digital SAT easier than the paper SAT?

It is shorter and its passages are much shorter, which many students find easier to manage. But it is adaptive, and the harder module 2 contains genuinely hard questions, so a high score still takes thorough preparation.

Is there an essay on the SAT?

No. College Board dropped the optional SAT essay in 2021, and the digital SAT has only the Reading and Writing and Math sections.
