# How the Digital SAT Is Scored: Adaptive Scoring | topin

SAT guidesHow the digital SAT is scored

## The score scale

Reading and Writing and Math are each scored from 200 to 800 in 10-point steps, and your total is the sum, from 400 to 1600\. The old subscores and cross-test scores are gone. Your score report also shows a score range around each score, based on the test's standard error of measurement, and a bar for each of the eight content domains showing how you did in it.

## Item response theory: why difficulty counts

College Board says scores are calculated with item response theory. Each question has known statistical properties: how hard it is, how well it separates stronger and weaker students, and how likely someone is to guess it correctly. Your score is the ability level that best explains your pattern of right and wrong answers across the questions you were given.

* Hard questions answered correctly count for more than easy ones.
* Two students with the same number right can get different scores, because they saw different questions.
* Wrong answers are not penalised, so you should never leave a question blank.
* The two pretest questions in each module do not count, but you cannot tell which they are.

## The two routes and the easier-module ceiling

Module 1 of each section is a broad mix of difficulties. Do well and module 2 is harder on average; do less well and it is easier. College Board does not publish the cut-off or a ceiling for the easier route. Prep teachers estimate that the easier module 2 limits a section to roughly 600 to 650, and some estimates run from about 560 to 670, so a section score clearly above 650 almost certainly means you were on the harder route.

The routing decision is also unpublished. Prep sources suggest that getting roughly 15 to 18 of the 27 Reading and Writing module 1 questions right, or 13 to 15 of the 22 Math ones, is around the line, but treat that as a rough guide, not a rule.

The practical lesson: module 1 accuracy matters more than speed. A careless slip on an easy module 1 question can cost you the harder route and with it the top of the scale.

## Raw scores to scaled scores

Because adaptive scores depend on the questions you saw, there is no official raw-to-scaled table for the digital test. The only official tables are for the linear, non-adaptive paper versions of Bluebook practice tests, and they differ by up to 40 or 50 points from one form to another at the same raw score. That is why any calculator, including ours, can only estimate.

__Estimated section scores by correct answers and route (topin's estimate, not official)__
| Correct | R&W, harder route (of 54) | R&W, easier route | Math, harder route (of 44) | Math, easier route |
| ---------------- | ------------------------- | ----------------- | -------------------------- | ------------------ |
| All | 800 | about 640 | 800 | about 650 |
| R&W 48 / Math 40 | 720 | 580 | 750 | 600 |
| R&W 42 / Math 34 | 660 | 530 | 680 | 540 |
| R&W 36 / Math 28 | 600 | 480 | 620 | 480 |
| R&W 30 / Math 22 | 540 | 430 | 560 | 430 |

## Score Choice and superscoring

Colleges see section and total scores. With Score Choice you can usually decide which test dates to send, and many colleges superscore, taking your best Reading and Writing and best Math from different dates. Policies vary, so check each college's admissions page.

## FAQs

Is the SAT scored by number of correct answers?

Not directly. It uses item response theory, so the difficulty of the questions you got right and the module 2 you were given both affect your score, not just the count.

Can you get 1600 on the easier module?

No. The easier module 2 limits how high a section score can go. College Board does not publish the ceiling, but prep teachers estimate it at roughly 600 to 650 per section.

Is there negative marking on the SAT?

No. A wrong answer scores the same as a blank, so always answer every question.

How can I tell if I got the harder module?

Bluebook does not tell you during the test. Module 2 feeling noticeably harder is a good sign, and a section score clearly above about 650 almost certainly means you were on the harder route.
