## Try three IELTS practice questions

Original questions in the style of the real test, with the answer and explanation one tap away.

Question 1 · IELTS Reading · [True/False/Not Given](/ielts/reading/true-false-not-given)

Passage: The town's first public lending library opened in 1851, paid for by a local tax that many ratepayers at first opposed. Within ten years most of its members were factory workers, who borrowed technical manuals far more often than novels. The library committee responded by keeping the reading room open into the evening, although it refused every request to open on Sundays. A second branch was built on the east side of the town in 1870\. Do the following statements agree with the information in the passage? Write TRUE, FALSE or NOT GIVEN. 1\. The tax that funded the library was popular with ratepayers from the start. 2\. The second branch was larger than the original library. 3\. Members could use the library after the end of a working day.

Show the answer

1 FALSE, 2 NOT GIVEN, 3 TRUE

1 is FALSE because the passage says many ratepayers at first opposed the tax, which directly contradicts 'popular from the start'. 2 is NOT GIVEN: the passage gives the year and location of the second branch but says nothing about its size, so you cannot say either way. 3 is TRUE because 'kept the reading room open into the evening' is a paraphrase of being usable after the working day.

Question 2 · IELTS Listening · [Form, note and table completion](/ielts/listening/form-completion)

Complete the form. Write ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER for each answer. Surname: (1) \_\_\_\_\_\_ Date of event: (2) \_\_\_\_\_\_ May Number of guests: about (3) \_\_\_\_\_\_ You hear: Woman: Can I take your surname, please? Man: Yes, it's Harlow. That's H-A-R-L-O-W. Woman: Thanks. And the party is on the fourteenth of May? Man: It was going to be, but we've moved it to the twenty-first. Woman: No problem. And how many people are you expecting? Man: About forty, I'd say.

Show the answer

1 Harlow, 2 21 (or 21st), 3 40 (or forty)

1 is spelt out letter by letter, so write it exactly: Harlow. 2 is the corrected date; the fourteenth is a distractor that the speaker changes. 3 is forty, which is best written in figures.

Question 3 · IELTS Reading · [Matching headings](/ielts/reading/matching-headings)

Paragraph B: Early glass-makers had no reliable way to control the heat of their furnaces, so the colour and strength of their glass varied from one batch to the next. The same recipe might produce clear glass one week and cloudy, brittle glass the following week. Only when thermometers that could survive furnace temperatures appeared were workshops able to repeat their results with confidence. Choose the correct heading for Paragraph B from the list below.

1. Ai The origins of coloured glass
2. Bii Why consistent quality was hard to achieve
3. Ciii The invention of the thermometer
4. Div Growing demand for window glass
Show the answer

ii Why consistent quality was hard to achieve

The whole paragraph explains why glass varied from batch to batch and how that problem was finally solved, which is heading ii. Heading iii matches only the last sentence, and the paragraph says nothing about who invented the thermometer. Heading i picks up the word 'colour' but colour is only one example of the variation. Heading iv is not mentioned at all.
