## Word count questions

What is the minimum word count for IELTS Writing?

At least 150 words for Task 1 and at least 250 words for Task 2\. Answers under the minimum lose marks for task achievement or task response.

Is there a maximum word count in IELTS Writing?

No, but longer isn't better. Time is the real limit: about 20 minutes for Task 1 and 40 for Task 2, and extra words add more chances for mistakes without adding marks on their own.

How are words counted here?

Each run of characters between spaces is one word, so hyphenated words, contractions and numbers each count once. Aim a little above the minimum so small counting differences never matter.

How long should I spend on each task?

The whole Writing test is 60 minutes and Task 2 counts twice as much as Task 1, so most people give about 20 minutes to Task 1 and 40 to Task 2\. The timer here uses those splits.

Is my writing saved or sent anywhere?

No. The counter runs entirely in your browser and nothing you type leaves your device.
