Question 1 · SAT Reading and Writing · [Words in Context](/sat/reading-writing/words-in-context)

The marine biologist's first survey of the reef was deliberately \_\_\_\_\_\_: she spent a single afternoon noting only the most visible species, planning to return later with a dive team for a full count. Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?

1. Aexhaustive
2. Bcursory
3. Cclandestine
4. Dcontentious
Show the answer

B: cursory

The colon introduces an explanation: one afternoon, only the most visible species, a full count to come later. So the survey was quick and shallow, and cursory means exactly that. Exhaustive is the opposite of what the second half describes. Clandestine (secret) and contentious (causing disagreement) do not connect to anything in the passage. "Deliberately" is a useful check: the biologist chose to be quick, which fits cursory.

Question 2 · SAT Reading and Writing · [Transitions](/sat/reading-writing/transitions)

Many early electric cars could travel only about 50 kilometres on a single charge. For drivers who used them for short errands around town, this was rarely a problem. \_\_\_\_\_\_ for families in the countryside, where trips were longer and places to recharge were scarce, the limited range made electric cars impractical. Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?

1. ASimilarly,
2. BAs a result,
3. CIn other words,
4. DBy contrast,
Show the answer

D: By contrast,

The sentence before says the short range was not a problem for town drivers; the sentence after says it was a problem for country families. That is a contrast between two groups, so By contrast fits. Similarly would need the same point repeated. As a result needs the second sentence to follow from the first, but it describes a different group, not a consequence. In other words would need a restatement.

Question 3 · SAT Math · [Student-produced response](/sat/math/student-produced-response)

If 5(x − 1) = 2x + 3, what is the value of x?

Show the answer

8/3 (also accepted: 2.666 or 2.667)

Expand: 5x − 5 = 2x + 3\. Subtract 2x and add 5: 3x = 8, so x = 8/3\. The fraction 8/3 fits in three characters, so enter 8/3\. As a decimal it is 2.6666…, which must fill all five characters: 2.666 or 2.667 are accepted, but 2.66 and 2.67 are marked wrong because they stop early. The mixed number 2 2/3 is not accepted at all.

## SAT practice test FAQs

Is the SAT practice test really free?

Yes. Your first full-length SAT mock is free with every section included. You sign in with Google so your answers and scores are saved to your account.

Do I get explanations after the SAT practice test?

Yes. When you finish you see your score for each section and can review every question with the correct answer and an explanation, so you know exactly what to practise next.

How long is the free SAT practice test?

2 hours 14 minutes of testing, like the real digital SAT: Reading and Writing in two 32-minute modules of 27 questions, then Math in two 35-minute modules of 22 questions. 98 questions in all.

Is the SAT practice test adaptive?

Yes. As on the digital SAT, module 1 of each section is a mix of easy, medium and hard questions, and module 2 is easier or harder depending on how you did. The harder module 2 is what opens the top of the score scale.

How is the SAT practice test scored?

Each section gets an estimated score from 200 to 800 based on your correct answers and the module 2 you reached, and the two add up to a total from 400 to 1600\. College Board does not publish its scoring tables, so treat it as an estimate.
