## TOEFL Listening question types

### Listen and Choose a Response

You hear one line, a question or statement, and choose the most natural written reply from four. The line itself is not shown.

Tip: Listen for what the speaker means, not just the words. Tone and set phrases like "Didn't you say…" or "I wish I could" often signal a complaint, a correction or a polite refusal.

### Listen to a Conversation

A short exchange between two people about an everyday or campus topic, followed by two questions.

Tip: Note each speaker's problem and what they decide to do. Questions usually ask about the purpose of the conversation or the next step.

### Listen to an Announcement

One speaker gives a short campus or classroom announcement about schedules, directions, rules or news, followed by two questions.

Tip: Write down times, places and any instruction to the listeners. Questions often ask what listeners should do.

### Listen to an Academic Talk

A short lecture or podcast-style talk on an academic topic, followed by four questions on the main idea, details, organisation and inference.

Tip: Write the topic in the first seconds, then note examples and the words that mark structure, such as "first", "however" and "so". The main idea question depends on the opening.

## How TOEFL Listening is scored

Listening is scored on the 1–6 band scale in half-band steps. Your first module decides whether the second is harder or easier, and only the harder path reaches the top bands. topin's mocks estimate your band from the share of items right on your path and show which task types cost you points.

## How to prepare for TOEFL Listening

1. 1
### Practise with one listen only
Nothing is replayed on test day, so never pause or rewind in practice. Listen once, answer, then replay only to check what you missed. This builds the habit of catching meaning the first time.
2. 2
### Keep notes short
Recordings are brief, so long notes make you miss the next sentence. Use a few words, arrows and symbols for who, what and why. For talks, note the topic and one word per example.
3. 3
### Train on everyday spoken English
Choose a Response tests idioms, intonation and implied meaning. Listen to podcasts, campus videos and TV dialogue with different accents, and pay attention to how people agree, refuse and complain indirectly.
4. 4
### Protect your first module
The first module has the most items and decides your path. Stay focused through all of it, including the quick Choose a Response items, which are easy to lose by drifting.
5. 5
### Review by task type
After each mock, check which task types you miss most. If it is academic talks, practise summarising a short lecture in one sentence; if it is Choose a Response, work on spoken phrases and tone.

## Common TOEFL Listening mistakes

* Taking such detailed notes that you miss the answer while writing.
* Choosing the reply in Choose a Response that repeats words from the audio rather than the one that answers it naturally.
* Losing focus between short items and missing the first words of the next recording.
* Practising with transcripts or replays so the one-listen format feels unfamiliar on test day.

## TOEFL Listening questions, answered

How long is TOEFL Listening in 2026?

Under half an hour. In topin's mocks the first module is 18 minutes and the second is 11 minutes on the harder path or 7 on the easier one.

Can you replay audio in TOEFL Listening?

No. Each recording plays once, so practise listening once and taking brief notes.

Can you take notes in TOEFL Listening?

Yes, notes are allowed in the Listening section.

What is Listen and Choose a Response?

You hear a single spoken line and pick the most natural written reply from four options. It tests everyday phrases, tone and implied meaning.

Is TOEFL Listening adaptive?

Yes. Your result in the first module decides whether you get a harder or easier second module, and the harder one is needed for the top bands.
