## How the overall band is worked out

Your overall band is the average of your four section bands, rounded to the nearest half band, with halves rounding up.

* 5.0 + 5.5 + 5.0 + 5.5 = 21.0, average 5.25, overall 5.5
* 5.0 + 5.0 + 5.5 + 5.0 = 20.5, average 5.125, overall 5.0
* 4.0 + 4.5 + 4.5 + 5.0 = 18.0, average 4.5, overall 4.5
* 3.5 + 4.0 + 4.0 + 4.0 = 15.5, average 3.875, overall 4.0

## TOEFL score questions

What is the new TOEFL score scale?

Since January 2026 the TOEFL iBT reports Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking, and your overall result, on a 1 to 6 band scale in half-band steps. Each band lines up with a CEFR level, from A1 at the bottom to C2 at 6\. During the transition, ETS also reports a comparable 0–120 score.

How is the TOEFL overall band calculated?

Take the average of your four section bands and round it to the nearest half band, with halves rounding up. An average of 5.25 becomes 5.5, and 5.125 becomes 5.0.

What CEFR level is a TOEFL band of 4.5?

4.0 and 4.5 are B2, upper intermediate. 5.0 and 5.5 are C1, and 6.0 is C2.

What TOEFL band do universities ask for?

It depends on the university and programme, and many now publish requirements on the 1–6 scale, sometimes with section minimums. Check each programme's admissions page for its current figure.

Is this calculator official?

No. It uses the rounding rule and CEFR alignment of the 2026 scale to turn section bands you already have, from a mock or a test report, into an overall band. Your official score report is the final word.
