They start short and grow longer. Tip: Listen for meaning, not just sounds: a sentence you understand is far easier to hold in memory. Copy the speaker's stress and rhythm, and keep going if you slip on a word. ### Take an Interview An interviewer asks four questions on one topic, from personal or factual questions to opinions on a broader issue. You have 45 seconds per answer and no preparation time. Tip: Answer in the first sentence, then give a reason and a specific example from your life. For opinion questions, one well-developed reason beats three listed ones. ## How TOEFL Speaking is scored Each response is scored for how well it completes the task and for delivery and language: pronunciation, fluency, grammar and vocabulary. Start with short sentences and lengthen them over the weeks. Pick one habit to fix each week rather than all at once. 4. 4 ### Fill the time without padding Stopping at 20 seconds leaves your answer underdeveloped, but repeating yourself does not help either. Add a second detail to your example if you finish early. 5. 5 ### Practise with no preparation time The real test gives none, so do not plan answers before recording.
