## How it works

A scenario gives you a reason to repeat, such as training as a guide and repeating what your manager says. You hear each sentence once and repeat it straight away. The sentences get longer as you go.

## Worked example

Scenario: You are training to work at a university library's help desk. Repeat exactly what the supervisor says. You hear: "Students who need a quiet place to work can book a study room online up to a week in advance."

Show the answer

Students who need a quiet place to work can book a study room online up to a week in advance.

A strong response keeps every word, including the small ones such as "a" and "to", and groups the sentence into meaningful chunks: students who need a quiet place to work / can book a study room online / up to a week in advance. Remembering three chunks is far easier than remembering twenty separate words.

## A method for Listen and Repeat

1. 1
### Listen for meaning
Picture what the sentence says. A sentence you understand is much easier to rebuild than a string of sounds.
2. 2
### Hear it in chunks
Break longer sentences into two or three phrases, often subject, action and extra detail. Repeat chunk by chunk with short natural pauses.
3. 3
### Copy the rhythm and stress
Stress the same words as the speaker and reduce the small ones. This sounds natural and helps you keep your place.
4. 4
### Keep going after a slip
If you miss a word, carry on to the end. A complete sentence with one error scores better than a sentence you abandon.
5. 5
### Practise by shadowing
Play short sentences from podcasts or lectures, pause and repeat them aloud. Lengthen the sentences over the weeks.

## Traps to avoid

* Changing words to something that sounds more natural to you instead of repeating exactly.
* Dropping small words such as articles, prepositions and plural endings.
* Stopping after a mistake on a long sentence instead of finishing it.
* Speaking so fast to keep up that pronunciation becomes unclear.
